  • Mr H and the girls explore around the former Rainford Delph Quarry known locally as 'Crank Caverns' near Rainford in Merseyside. The tunnels created by sandstone quarry mining have had many urban myths and local legends attached to them, from secret masses being held there during the persecution of Catholics by King Henry VIII to vicious dwarfs being thought to inhabit the subterranean labyrinth.
    Special thanks to UA-cam user 'Lee Colins' who made me aware of this location.

      Yes, definately visit them if you get the chance as I unwittingly caught a disembodied voice asking "(Who)'re they?" and an orb passing in front of the camera lens whilst making this video.
      I edited these into a seperate little video which can be seen here:-
      ua-cam.com/video/LyZfr4ZgPyM/v-deo.html
      Whilst I'd say the orb is 50/50 and could be dust falling from the ceiling past the camera lens I've never been able to think of an explanation for the voice that I caught which can be clearly heard albiet faint.
      Anyway I'd love to get your thoughts on what I captured that day if you have the time to watch the video and many thanks for commenting on this one, enjoy the rest of your day/evening and all the best.

    I visited this site on 12th April 2024 and found it very creepy, I also heard voices come from the deeper darker cavern between dripping water. Very eerie place and there were a few people there the guardian with his stick and 2 kids on bikes who warned us the off road bikers were on there way.
    I found another interesting mine feature in shevington behind paradise farm, a pit ventilation shaft visible from M6 in a field belongs to the Albert Pit.

    Its a strange place with a sinister atmosphere that was always a magnet for teenagers, I haven't been there for 20+ year now but it looks like the litter & graffiti is a lot worse. I always liked the idea of sleeping in there overnight but by the looks of things and your hesitance to venture deeper the creepy atmosphere still prevails. Well done Mr H.

      I must admit getting a bit freaked out when we thought we heard voices coming from deep within the caverns. Although when I eventually ventured part way inside it was more than likely water dripping down from the ceiling and echoing. Be sure to check out my new video featuring a couple of clips taken inside the caverns with a faint unknown voice being heard on one and a bright light flashing past the camera lens in another. ua-cam.com/video/LyZfr4ZgPyM/v-deo.html

    i went there yesterday, found three dead ducks all with their throats ripped out. i think the small bearded men are at it again

    • @MrHsHotPot
      @MrHsHotPot  6 років тому

      Maybe, or.... there is a Fox or several of them living close by Crank Caverns. 😉

    • @citrus8944
      @citrus8944 6 років тому

      wouldnt the fox have dragged them off to its den or eaten them, not just left them

    • @MrHsHotPot
      @MrHsHotPot  6 років тому

      Foxes especially in the countryside will kill easily available prey even if they are not hungry at that moment in time as they treat it as surplus then return for it later after caching (burying) it for later when hunting is not so good and they are hungry. You or someone else may have disturbed a Fox from doing this when you approached the area where you found the dead Ducks. More plausible than small bearded men living deep inside the Caverns TBH.

      I didn't venture too far inside them when I visited them Artsravenclaw, due to having the small Terrier with me as they like to bolt off down small holes and I didn't want to risk losing her. Plus there's that much crap inside them that you don't know what's inside there in the way of used needles etc. but fair play to you for exploring them.

    Hello there Mr and Mr's H and the girl's,,,,,,,,,,,,Interesting place, but i cant stand graffiti of any description, proper blight,, plus it looked very unstable to venture into, and as much as i hate to say it, i would fear drug users needles, never the less thanks for bringing this place to our attention.

      Hi Al, it's a pity that this area has been allowed to get into such a neglected and vandalised state. Despite the many lager cans and graffiti there was no evidence of drug use in this area when I visited.

      Its actually in a really nice location, & been down the caves many times. Graffiti and beer cans have always been a problem, probably local & visiting teenagers. Its too far out in the country for drug needles thankfully.

    Interesting place Mr H, sham about the rubbish and the graffiti.

      It is Mick my wife and I visited some similar man made caves formed by stone quarry mining called the 'Hohenfels-Essinger Eishöhlen' (Ice Caves of Hohenfels-Essingen) in Germany last year and the contrast couldn't be more different, no rubbish and no graffiti anywhere to be seen. I suppose the Germans in general still respect their natural surroundings and don't go out of their way to spoil it for others unlike over here.

      Hi Grumpy Old Git Reads, they are very eerie and atmospheric even inside the parts I ventured into. I'm not really into the 'Most Haunted' type of thing but when editing this film ready for upload I noticed that had briefly managed to capture a distant voice on video that I was unaware of at the time. Mrs H also pointed out that something flashes past the camera at 3:33 but shoots upwards rather than downwards so it's not dust that I've disturbed from the caverns ceiling when entering. I'm going to play around with these two bits of footage and I'll post the results in a separate video.

    So we went weekend gone, must have had a rubbish clean up. We went up the bars in the end deeper caves which wont let you go any deeper. Someone has graffiti 'hell's on the walls which makes it even eerie....love the spooky feel of this place!

    It would be nice if the council did something with it but unfortunately it's no where near Eccleston which of course means they don't give a toss.

    It's horrible the deeper you go, I've never done it but I know people who have, they said to get in you need to crawl though a really low passage and once they got in they saw candles on the walls they weren't lit or anything, still though that place is weird af.

    I used to play here as a kid back in the early 1970’s, and I remember that at one end, at the far opposite of the entrance, just to the left of the caverns there was a narrow ledge. On this ledge there was a hole and you could (with some difficulty) scramble down to a very low chamber filled with rubble, at the end of this chamber there was another hole which led to a circular tunnel which you could stand upright in. This tunnel was a loop and took about 20 minutes to traverse. The entrance must have been bigger at one time as there was a 45 gallon drum down there somewhere. I went back for a visit in the mid 1990’s and the hole had been filled with rubbish; there was another entrance which led off the bigger cavern, but I could find no trace of that either.
