The safety man made ONE mistake. Should've capped off that statement with:

it's funny because many companies are wising up and buying off OSHA employees or simply getting lawyers to fight the fines because the fines are more expensive than the legal fees (usually), and still fire the employee on top of that if they were a higher-paid one for a fresh one. Has happened to me and a lot of people at an RV manufacturer I worked for. Got an injury and want to see a doctor? Write an incident report explaining how it was YOUR (the employee's) fault you got injured even though you followed EVERY safety regulation on the site so we don't have to send you to a doctor. Can't go to OSHA for that cause the documentation will say different.
Honestly just quit before something bad happens and find a better company because you don't want to be made to feel like you were responsible especially if it's REALLY fucking bad.

    • @Cheesus-Sliced
      @Cheesus-Sliced 2 роки тому +17

@@Rikkity a lot of that paperwork is purely to scare people, it doesn't actually have any legal sway. In my experience at the moment (in australia) most companies are recognising that its very quickly becoming cheaper to just up their prices to clients, and do things properly every time, avoid fines and incidents because those cause lost time, which loses contracts faster than increased prices (if you still do a good job, anyway).

You know what else bankrupts companies? OSHA fines for not providing basic ppe, especially if it contributed to injuries.
The skit is funny as always, but kidding aside, there are two types of companies, the ones where Tommy wins this argument, and the ones where the safety guy does. You want to work for that one. Yeah PPE can be a nuisance sometimes but I'd rather work for a company pushing it, than one withholding it. I can honestly say where I work, Tommy wouldn't have gotten two or three sentences into his argument before safety man left, and department head (who does determine if Tommy gets paid) showed up to bid him farewell.

My truck alway has PPE for everyone on site with lots of extras ( no boots ) I’ve got probably 8 spare hard hats that have never been touched, it’s cheaper for me to provide it. The law here requires you to pay the employee for the remainder of the day if they injure themselves at work. My lowest paid helper makes $20 per hour, one pair of eye pro cost $2, PPE is my cheapest overhead by far. Safety is still 3rd but everyone has to go home basically how they showed up.

If you need it to do your job, we'll get it for you" and material is the complete opposite.
Production management is always screaming at material management about us in production not getting the things we need to actually run the line. Whether it be gloves, replacement tools, or even just the parts that we assemble on our product.
I have a gun on my team that will occasionally break its bits and the animosity between material and production rears its ugly head. It's so bad to the point where our shift supervisor(so this is someone fairly high on the corporate ladder) had to go back to the store personally and pull some management override nonsense to simply get us those replacement bits because they won't give them to us. The thing was I had only been at that job for 3 days and when I started I had my own gloves; I was not about to give him gloves that I bought and paid for in exchange for gloves that they were legally supposed to provide for me. When I told him he could have my gloves for $15.75 and a new pair he threatened to get me fired. Damned I know I didn’t work the phone lines for long, but these videos are always on point. The alternative scenario is when you put in the order for replacement PPE and the company just straight doesn’t send it. They will pull every excuse not to give you anything, but they will leave the order open and just say they can’t work you in. I was supposed to have prescription safety glasses but the company wouldn’t schedule for me to see their optometrist to get the process started. Luckily I had just done my yearly check up and I handed my supervisor my signed prescription and he put in the order himself. Had to dip out about six months ago cause some jack wagon rear ended my van at a stop light and the company said I should have done something to prevent the accident despite not being at fault according to the law. And about a month ago one of my buddies called me to let me know my safety glasses had come in and they had sent about 20 pairs that no one can use cause they’re all set to my prescription. So it took them over a year to get my shit shipped in, and I don’t even work there anymore. Corporate is somethin’.

Wow, I'm on track to becoming tool-room Tommy at FedEx soon. I was just recently promoted to be an admin from a package handler back in March and I handle equipment and address corrections. We are about to switch locations to a much bigger one and I was told my new responsibilities will be scanning out equipment to the managers and their work areas.
We're talking $500-$600 scanners and label-makers, $10-$15 armbands to hold them, clips for badges, vests, glasses, lanyards and so on. My responsibilities will be to inventory the equipment and place it in a box, scan the box and a manager's badge so we can track which manager and which work area the equipment will go to, and when the manager brings the equipment back and I scan it back in, inventory it at the end of the day to make sure nothing is missing (particularly the expensive stuff).
I have a feeling I'll have to be as much of a stickler as Tool-Room Tommy is just to do my job effectively. I also have a feeling that most of the requests for equipment will be the smaller stuff like glasses, vests and so on.

In this situation at my job only gloves are a concern lol.
We use them to touch just about anything and everything and believe me when I say they do get destroyed.
Roughly every 3-6 months depending on the amount of action they see as not all tasks require you to have to use them.
Every other piece of safety equipment they are fine with passing out.
We also have specialty equipment like chainsaws that we wear a special piece of PPE called chaps to protect our legs (rarely operated) those have to be turned in at the end of each job they go out on to ensure that they are their for the next job.
We also have ear plugs for any kind of jobs where noise is an issue. Besides that as it is apart of our uniform we have to wear steel toe boot. I have a pair of steel toe shoes as they are for wearhouse work.

The room's only door was one of those doors that was split in two, so the top had a lock and the bottom had a lock so the top could open to give out tools. Adjusted the locks one day and put the top lock on the outside and kept the bottom one inside, so if you're walking there it would look like the room is locked and I'm gone. Nope. I worked at a tank and vessel place before. You had to show your old gloves, glasses, etc. Sanding discs and such all had to be recorded on daily Expendables log and labeled with job number to charge proper job. Grinding discs. Wire. Gas. One guy got fed up and recorded bandaids, aspirins, and water and cups.
Ear plugs were at the time clock. They wanted you to keep a pair a few days but everyone used them once. Dust masks, you had cheap ones for most applications. The good ones had a a little breathing port and better nose contact. They really didn't like handing those out. Paint markers and soap stones another hot item. The big sanding pads were cut down for the 4 inch grinders.
So the tool room tommy is everywhere.
