The individual with the red hair and sunglasses on next to Chong is my Uncle, Randall Perry. He was a fantastic musician/Disc Jockey and passed away from skin cancer in 1995. His DJ name was Red Noize.
I hope this helps!!! He was an AMAZING man and very dear to me. Incredibly talented and the best sense of humor. So good to see this again.

Iconic. This came out when I was a teenager in the 80s, and "Well, turn it UP, man!" became a catchphrase among my peers. It was the first time I had heard most of these songs, and when "classics" stations moved from 50s/60s doo wop and Mowtown to songs like these, I heard the full versions for the first time. Thanks, Freedom Rock!

It turns out that actual fake hippies that live in the people's Republic of Ann Arbor and surrounding enclaves of liars and racists don't react to this Pavlovian bell. The Grateful Dead, that shitty, shitty band of pedos in Birkenstocks, is not featured as part of the era that is meaningful to the hippies that actually believed in something and went to jail without snitching on their friends. Some hippies, of course, snitched on undercover cops that were ripping off bikers and stuff. They did their time, but those pigs in sheep's clothing got theirs. Hells Angels always get their message across. And the dead hippies found in piles in washes in Southern California near the Mexican border were mostly cops, or sometimes actually hippies that maybe raped the girlfriend of a biker. What does it matter when you're an empty vessel whose entire personality can be featured in 15-30 seconds of a parodic commercial made by punk rockers who hated the grateful dead?
Thank you. The Dead were the snitches that should have been piled near the border. Jerry Garcia, however, spoke a little Spanish and had his choice of borderline underage girls, all runaways (well, they sort of walked, being hippies). As long as he got the tamale first, he sent experienced, but obviously highly abused and post-traumatic roadies (after weeks on tour dodging unwashed hippies copping a feel because "they just can't help it") on missions as ambassadors to a strange land, where hippies were rare because you have to have a job to survive in Mexico, but the drugs were at bargain basement prices. So, she started thinking "how do I make enough money here being adopted by this rich cartel family as a baker (Jerry's Spanish wasn't that good), if my heroin habit AND my drug problem aren't addressed, since she could never have more than she needed - smart girl, but bad taste in music, considering it was 1976, and the other hippies were listening to jazz and ambient-New Age, or independently creating new genres. Of course, you definitely needed drugs to make the new music, but you really only needed drugs to tolerate the Grateful Dead, explaining why the band had to take thousands of $$$ of drugs per hippie per weekend just to seem like they were enjoying the lifestyle that wasnt much more than style over a pedophile. Imagine listening in on the wire that Jerry wore from the Volkswagen bus mobile command center parked outside the stadium near the alley where actual homeless beggars shit and talked to themselves.

Here is a odd way of looking at this. When this album and commercial were released around 1987 the average age of these songs was 15-20 years old. It is now 2017, making the commercial 30 years old, almost twice the age of some of the songs they were advertising at the time.

We grew up in the 1980's when Hippies were old news...so when this ad played and the guy said "Hey Man, is that Freedom Rock?" my buddy would say "Well turn it OFF, man!" - good times! :D

These were our "Start the Party" discs back in our crazy party days 89-91. We were all 18-21 but had older siblings and cousins that turned us on to this great music. We'd put these CDs on and EVERYBODY liked them and nobody bitched about the music. Great Great music to socialize to. Wonderful memories as well.

I was an early 90s kid and I love about half these songs. The Baby Boomer hippies like these two dudes seemed like they'd be so cool to hang with, probably because they're mellow lefties and smoke weed.

my best friend and I used to give our dad's shit quoting this commercial when we were kids. we were about 12 years old at the time circa 1988. They'd be listening to classic rock and we'd go "HEY IS THAT FREEDOM ROCK, MAN? WELL TUUURRN IT UP, MAN!" Now I love classic rock music.😆

It has to be around 1988 or so. I remember frequently going to a club in San Diego around that time. A guy with long hair and an American flag bandana always danced when a band played. We called him Freedom Rock Freddy.

I saw it was addressed way down in the comments but worth mentioning again. The red-haired fella on the right was a great radio DJ known as "Red Noize". I worked with him at Z93 a classic rock station in the mid 90s. Unfortunately cancer claimed his life. I don't remember exactly when the funeral was, but I believe it was early 1995. He was a great guy. I believe he also DJ'd back in the day at Denver's KILO radio.

When I was a kid, if I had told the other kids that I would one day be communicating with you they would have never believed me but here we are. You delivered your lines brilliantly and created such a timeless character. I couldn't tell you how many times in my life I have thought of this ad whenever I hear one of the songs from the album on the radio. Thanks so much for the entertainment. I really hope you are still acting because you are very talented.
