I'm not an emotional man, I'm not someone who cries easily. But when you started singing "Silent Night" in German...phew that hits deep and hard. So deeply that I cried my eyes out. Thank You for that Moment. And thank you for thinking about the German soldiers in your videos. 99% of the soldiers, whether they were German, English or French, wanted to be in these trenches and they didn't hate each other.
I really can't get over this event. It shows the humanity behind both war powers. Regardless of right or wrong, soldiers are pawns sent to die by men who never have to worry about their life being at risk. Major props to all of these men for celebrating Christmas together and having that spirit.
i wouldn't say they never had to worry about their lifes, but they definitely had a higher chance of survival and better quality of life than the soldiers fighting on their behalf on the battlefield
I love this story. That ad was so good. When the two young soldiers introduce themselves to each other, I did get slightly teary eyed. So happy I watched this. Thank you.
This has always been a fascinating event. A moment of humanity between two enemies. It's hard to think of how you could fight each other after an event like that. After seeing that however different you are to your enemy, you and them can still be compassionate and just plain, civilised humans; shaking hands, exchanging gifts, playing sports and just chatting with each other and yet go straight back to killing each other the next day. There would have definitely been soldiers questioning themselves after the Truce. Man, The Great War was just a whole other level of brutal, but at least there was this truce to leave one spark of humanity left in it. Amazing video, Chris. Love your work and your singing voice, aswell.
The most beautiful event of one of the darkest wars in history, where the humane spirit rose above all that misguided hate fueled by imperialistic greed that led millions to their untimely, pointless death. Amazing video!
It gives me a little sense of pride, to see, that the FC St.Pauli/Celtic FC scarf, I left at the memorial in 2021 was still there, during your record. Thanks for the nice video and great storytelling.👍🤝👏
Im not sure if you know this but under that English flag is actually a Rangers FC scarf. I know your connection to my (our) club as I am a rangers fan myself and have loved your channel for years. If you would like some history involving our club and ww1, Rangers were actually the first club in Scotland to sign a black football player, his name was Walter Tull and he was welcomed to the club in 1917. He unfortunately never played a game for Rangers as he died in WW1 a hero. He was so well accomplished at the time that he was put forward for a military cross having served in multiple football battalions, but the feeling at the time wouldnt see this come through. I just wish he saw the day to play for our famous club but he lives on in the great history books of the greatest team in world football 🇬🇧 Keep up the great work and ever better content. These men will never be forgotten.
Lol the German singing, 10/10. I love that story so much, when the humanity shines through, we are all one, but we never can hold on to that humanity for long enough.
Thanks for this Christmas gift Chris. This is a wonderful story that should remind us that whatever things may divide us, culture, skin color, religion, politics, that which all human beings have in common is far greater. Have a fantastic Christmas!
Thank you for sharing this great story. You tell it so well. Shivers. And the add is amazing. I will go to Ypres this weekend to get a glance of what happened. Glad there are also stories like this!
I wonder what will happen this Christmas in Eastern Europe? My wish is that there was a permanent truce, but I know it is a long shot. Celebrating peace, should be an everyday occurrence! That ad, at the end, got my tear ducts working! Stay safe, stay sane, stay Strong, Happy Holidays
May we learn the person who someone says is your “enemy” is just another person with loved ones, dreams, and desires. We all bleed the same no matter what someone in power may say. Peace on earth. Good will to all. Merry Christmas. Happy Hanakkuh. Happy Holidays to all.
The Christmas Truce was such a beautiful moment in history. It’s heartbreaking knowing that at the end the fighting would resume but for just a bit there was peace on earth.
Love this story and it's nice to get your take on it. You always do a great job in your presentation. I can imagine those men being angry at the generals. Just imagine being expected to shoot at men you just celebrated a holiday with.
One of my favorite Christmas stories….thank you for so expertly presenting it! And great singing voice! When does the Vlogging Through History Christmas album come out? Just teasing! Great work and Merry Christmas to you and all your followers.
Those 4 videos were absolutely great. Makes me want to return to Ypres and visit the places I missed last time. Do keep up the good work ! It would be great to have some kond of map of the places you visit 😉
If I were a soldier on either side during the truce, I don’t think I would ever sleep again knowing that I had the chance of killing a soldier on the other side that I had just spent a few days singing Christmas carols with and briefly forgetting that we were both fighting the deadliest conflict in human history up to that point. Great video.
I believe t❤hat whilst talking they compared battle honours and found that their regiments had fought together in Wellingtons Peninsula army and Waterloo. You obviously know of the King's German Legion and the Brunswick Oels and their black uniforms and deaths head crest.
doesnt need to happen again if we just would stop killing each other nonstop for literal retarded reasons. Let politicians themself fight and stop killing the normal people.
In the early to mid sixties, the BBC or IWM [I think, it may possibly have been both in conjunction], recorded a series of interviews with Great War veterans, as they realised they were beginning to die off and time was running out to get their recollections. One such interview was with the Novelist, Henry Williamson, who was an eye-witness to the Christmas truce in 1914. I believe that this interview is still available to view on the Internet. From memory, it confirms many of the details given here. Incidentally, although he has a strong following still, Williamson's reputation took a bit of a bash because of his alleged fascist sympathies between the wars, It was on a journey [to the post box!] to respond to a letter from Williamson, suggesting a meeting, that T.E Lawrence met his death.
I’ve said this many times to my friends about the Christmas truce of 1914 that the vast majority of soldiers on both sides didn’t want to kill one another!
Merry Christmas Chris. Have you seen Joyeaux Noel? It’s a great film, I’m planning on rewatching it soon. Peace ✌🏻 and God Bless. P.S. You used a clip from the film you probably have my bad.
There may be a language barrier, but nothing stops enemy`s from becoming friend`s. When i think of history i am sad i have a love for history but i am sad at the fact that millions fought for a useless reason just because some government wanted land or because of one man killing a important figure millions die and the 'War to end all wars' is a good example.
Thank you documenting this experience. Do you know if the trench at the Christmas Truce site preserved from WW1, or completely a modern-made construction?
I'd like to recommend a video about the shipwreck in Chicago that killed more people than the Titanic. The channel is called Ask A Mortician and the video is titled The Forgotten Disaster of the SS Eastland.
@@luke-kz2mv I didn't pay attention much in school so I got a lot of things out of context or slightly wrong. I remember he had something wrong with juice? I mean, apple juice is kind of nasty IMO but all juice?
The Christmas Truce was only possible between the Germans and British. The sentiment at the time in 1914 was they shouldn’t be fighting each other. The Christmas Truce absolutely couldn’t have happened between anyone else. It was such a unique time.
Because of this event, I research WW1 and watch more about it around the Christmas time. I don't have any ancestors who served in the war, though my grandfather was a Vietnam vet. I just think WW1 is such an important event and such a human event that I guess I try to memorialize and remember these young men around Christmas time, when they briefly went against the mass death and pain to celebrate Jesus, celebrate life and keep it as a reminder of the strength of the human soul.
Hey VTH, I just wanted to let you know that a bunch of your reactions with Oversimplified has been taken down. It's probably just some weird copyright stuff, but I went back to check one of them that I didnt get to watch (Pig War), and it didnt appear :( Don't know if this is a issue you're aware of, but just wanted to let you know. Merry Christmas to you and everyone else :D
You’ve got such a great personality and a even better singing voice. This is a great video. Good Job

A bit of humanity within the horror of the inhumanity of war.
The Christmas truce story always touches the heart.

I've been looking forward to this one!
This video gave me goosebumps. This event in the war is so meaningful, says so much about war and those involved. Thank you for making this video!
Well presented, I’m getting through them all slowly, thanks for posting 👍
Hi, Chris, that was brilliant thanks, I've been looking forward to this.
Your storytelling here is wonderful. And you have a very good singing voice too! Great episode
I love these WW1 stories you tell Chris. And was looking forward to this one 😉

Thus why there was mass troop relocation.
This is one of your best videos about WW1. Also your singing voice is beautiful. I could've listen to you sing that song in German in full.
What a incredible story. Really moving. And you have a good voice sir! I didn't expect that.
First class video. Thank you.
I am assuming that the wood lining to trenches has been replaced a few time since WW1
Each episode gets better and better. This one was great wonderufl
Great video. A story now iconic when talking about the history of The Great War
Great video. I love anything historical. I recently did some research on this truce and it was amazing.
And that ad was phenomenal.

Wonderful original content as always. Thanks for this video about a great topic!

The Christmas Truce of 1914 is one of those stories that restores faith in humanity. Something so rare, yet something we pray will happen again.

Absolutely. Please feel free.
