  • Recently, we bought our new home on wheels: our VW LT35 2001 long-wheelbase campervan, Elton. However… After living in it for a couple of months FULL TIME, we’ve discovered more and more things that we wish we could change and wish we’d known before buying such an old converted campervan and throwing ourselves into full-time vanlife.

As long as your vehicle is mechanically sound you are good. My advice is not to sink too much money into your van which isn't necessary. Your Van is a Van it's not an off-road vehicle. Perhaps best to keep your eyes on arriving safely at your destination as the #1 priority would be my advice. There are several van conversion UA-camrs take a look at what they do for ideas.

White smoke is related to water, blue smoke relates to oil. It could be an indication that the head gasket has a problem and letting water into the engine, especially as your levels are going down.

    • @Gunner-45
      @Gunner-45 10 місяців тому +4

If you see a creamy white around the coolant filler is another indication as it shows oil mixing with the coolant and that the head gasket is leaking water into the engine

White smoke coming from the exhaust usually points to one point of failure: the injectors. Usually, white smoke indicates that the diesel fuel is not burning correctly. Unburned diesel fuel will make its way through the exhaust completely unused.

As most of the other coments white smoke is water could be your head gasket. ref the light problem you could fit a master switch to cut off all the power to the lights but put your switch in a handy place to get too, the seats speaker and power/cig lighter have a look on e bay for your bits required. hope that helps. loving the content well done guys. x

Lanoguard sprayed on every year will keep the rust at bay :) That's not a lot of smoke, it could be just moisture and not necessarily the head gasket. You've got a good solid van for the age by the looks of it with a great conversion. Lots of newer motorhomes have a lot of teething problems and some just a few yrs old need replacement engines, gearboxes, suffer from juddering and all sorts. You could get a dog for the middle seat ;) I'd recommend a vw specialist for servicing, not vw itself but someone independent who normally used to work for them. If your in South Wales I know a great one in the Gower which is also a great place to stop over.

I hate to say it but I did mention about your head gasket about 8 vids ago. Get the van looked at guys, nothing worse than trying to enjoy a long trip away let alone living in a house on wheels worrying constantly about it, you dont want a break down on your hands, they always happen at the worst time too and would leave you needing to get back to family or a hotel whilst its being fixed, best to get it checked to be on the safe side in my opinion. Those old vw's are pretty good motors so who knows, it might be something inexpensive, fingers crossed.

White smoke is coolant evaporate, probably head gasket leaking.
If you get it done I reccomend getting a top end recon while its all off e.g. valve seated/decarbonised. Maybe replace ancillaries like water pump/auxillary pump while head is off. Not sure what's easy to get at with head off.
I read the cams can be advised to replace, but not certain.
Sounds complicated I know, but it makes sense if you deep dive the problem - you'll be fine👍

Good morning to two of my favorite beings on the planet😁😎Personally, i LOVE Elton! I think you DID make a proper decision buying the van. The more you learn the more you know and add to your ‘arsenal’ of experiences! I do understand all the joys n pains of van/rv life. Will state emphatically, i agree find a good mechanic to do a once over to save money and stress down the line! Worth every penny! When it comes to ANYTHING rubberized seals tubes lines hoses etc, they do wear over time. I know you will adapt and make better all you need, you have priorities after all and deserve them as a result of your hard work. Yeah most here have no idea how taxing travel can be, comfort is needed to de-stress! I will say practice makes perfect so backing up and getting thru tight spaces you should learn. We took it to France and Spain for 6 weeks in Sept and Oct and found it hilarious that you had some similar issues. It took us ages to get anywhere and due to the van being old with not much power we found the motorways too fast and the mountain roads very steep!!We took a while to find the van and only had it a week before we left and def wished wee had done some trial run in the Uk. that said we love our van - namely 'le van' for some random reason and would love to hear from you Kaz and James xxxx

You will always be battling with mechanical issues on an older vehicle but there are benefits over a newer one. Just get it all checked out properly and mechanical things fixed properly and it will see you right.May be head gasket etc. From a living perspective, you would do well to build your own van once you have really lived in it for a while. That way you will be better placed to have exactly what you want and be able to fix /enhance it. A huge learning curve and costly too. I recommend you get saving and keep an eye out for a GOOD base van and start all over again!

I'd look for a specialist in LT35s/VW 2.5TDI engines and have them take a look over it, white smoke could be a number of things from injection timing, the turbo seals or even coolant related. It might not be something major but as it's an older diesel a lot of modern garages won't really know what they are doing with it. For the rust have a look at lanoguard, it's easy to apply and should preserve it a bit longer. Overall they're a pretty solid platform though, much newer vans are capable of throwing far bigger bills with all the emissions equipment that is fitted to them

  • @billpeterson178

White smoke at start up could just be condenstion in your exhaust system creating steam from the hot air blowing out. That would go away less than a minute after start up.
However, if it occurs after start up, it could be a problem. Especially since you stated that the coolant levels keep dropping. I would suspect that coolant is getting into the engine via a blown head gasket, or a cracked block, or main seal. If the coolant tank fluid is remaining it's color, not getting darker, then it probably isn't a cracked block.

I think you should get it checked. A mechanic can do tests to isolate the problem. If repairs are necessary, it will probably be labor intensive and you may want to think about replacing other parts of the engine since it will probably have to be removed. @@2Passports1Dream

You would get steam on start-up, but if it lasts past the van getting warm, then that's an issue. It could also be oil smoke, and that isn't good. It could be the piston rings or valve seals. Both are expensive. Best to take it to a diesel mechanic...

If the white smoke is only appearing when the engine is cold, it could be normal condensation. However, if it constant throughout thee temp range, it could be a head gasket. And condensation will be more of a constant stream of whitish smoke (steam), where a leaky gasket will be more of a puff-puff as the leaking cylinder burns the fluid. Ànd dropping fluid levels should make you wonder where the fluid is going.

Next time if you buy any vehicle always have a reliable mechanic give it a look over at their shop to assess all potential issues. this way you can negotiate price or decline from purchase.

At last you are owning up to the fact that camper vanning is not all it's up to due to the issues you have raised. If you are going to upgrade install a private shower with loo. That would be my first priority. Faults with the van can be fixed but privacy is more important. Equally you need to tell people how you get rid of waste etc. On the canal there are Elsan points with sometimes laundry facilities.
I lived close to a Co-op so did most of my shopping there.
Winter is approaching fast so prepare well.
    Good luck John 🤞

buy online a repair and maintenance manual for your vehicle make year and model, cost roughly £10 for the pdf file. it has loads of good info on how to service and repair all sorts of stuff on your vehicle.
i use this and the internet to get the best possible picture in my mind on how to do certain jobs.
ive just recently changed a starter motor, expansion tank and done a full service and not had any previous experience.
its saved me about £500 in labour and also saved money on parts by going for the best possible deal i can find.
its super empowering when you can get to understand the engine and all of its components, and having a better understanding on repairing and maintaining your vehicle.

I’d say you brought a beautiful home. It may well be old and with a few issues but with regular servicing it will last you years. I’m not a mechanic so take my reply with a pinch of salt but white smoke sounds like the head gasket may need attention. Personally I think you bought a good van from an honest seller. My previous neighbour had the same van as you although yours is kitted out much better. I’d say have a drive of it on quieter roads and you’ll get used to it. @anonymouspdg6121 10 місяців тому

So, I'm not a mechanic but a van that age with that kind of mileage will have all the issues and more you have experienced as normal.
The coolant level dropping all the time could be many things, leaking hose or radiator or, a leak in the engine block / head gasket. Hose or radiator while annoying isn't that big an issue and relatively easy to solve but the leak in the engine could be very expensive and even more so if not sorted sooner rather than later, especially if you intend traveling long distances in hotter climates?
Blue smoke on a diesel engine of that mileage is expected as the injectors will be worn and could be that the mix being injected into the cylinders is not the right ratio and could have some oil in it? Is the van needing to have oil added regularly? Again, if your expecting to travel long distances, it's something I would want to get investigated and potentially sorted sooner rather than later as this could save you mega ££s in the future.
You have a dilemma as the cab look and feel is a 'want to have' not a 'need to have' but sometimes the want to have is important enough to outweigh the costs.
Ultimately, the life you are living and want to live needs the van to be sound and at least have basic comforts in the cab so I guess it comes down as always to what your budget is V what your priorities are balanced against each other and what compromises you are willing to make.
I'm old so maybe don't have the same perspective as you lol but good luck on your journey!
