Your videos slowly made it onto my feed and now im finding myself a daily fan, and I can only hope they make their way to every long time gamer. Just a fantastic time every time thank you.
Hey Daniel congrats for the great video as always! I just want to let you know that Toejam & Earl are in a Early Acess Steam game called Super Indie Karts, they even have a race track based on the first game levels, I suggest you check it out it's also a really good game!
I remember in early-mid 2000's I actually went on the TJ&E 3 website on clicked on Contact Us. I actually emailed the website saying how much I liked the series but was also asking if there was another sequel in development as some years went by. Greg Johnson actually emailed me back thanking me for the email but also stated that due to poor sales on the 3rd one it would be hard to find a publisher and development money. I was very saddened by this and replied that I would fund the game myself (I was 12) lol But now finally we have a remake of the first one
Toejam and Earl on the SEGA Genesis was like the biggest game of my childhood, I loved that game soooo much! Such great nostalgia feelings from just watching this!
The secret to injecting your character with ‘tude is to also add a heaping handful of humble and a dash of self-deprocating humor. For example… During the intro video, Earl flicking his eyelashes when Toejam calls him out for crashing the ship. So charming.
TJ&E3 remains my favorite in the franchise. The recent game most definitely offers up some fun times, but the controllability and 60fps gameplay (plus some sweet looking Gen 6 visuals) put it above the others.
I picked up the new game and can definitely vouch: If you liked the original TJ&E, you'll like it too. It really is a modernized take on the original game, but with loads of QOL improvements everywhere. (And far less tedious wandering around while nothing whatsoever is happening.) Although it may be a hard sell for anyone not already familiar with the franchise, since it is such an oddball mashup of (lite) roguelike and platformer.
I had so much fun with the first game. Me and my brother used to play it alot. One day I was just trying to find those secret paths that appear when u come close borders, but I ended jumping a little gap, I mean, I should have been able to jump it, if it wasn´t for a scared sant claus on jetpack that my bother spotted and flew right on front of me, making me hit santa and fall to the previus lvl. I remember laughing like half hour because of this. For my surprise and joy, I downloaded the back on the groove game, from Steam, and play it with my 4 year old son. He likes it and I remember the good old times.
My first exposure to Toejam and Earl was actually panic on funkitron. My brother and I had it for our Sega Genesis and loved it. We had no idea there was a first until YEARS later in my late teens. When we went back and played the original on roms, we were so thrown off by the gameplay. We liked it a lot but we just didn't know what to make of it. Within only the last few months have gotten my nephew (just turned 11) to play the original Toejam and Earl and Panic on Funkitron with me and I am so happy to report these games have held up to the test of time. My nephew LOVES them both and I still think the original is such a fun and unique game and panic on funkitron still hold up as a very solid 2 player co-op side scroller. And it's a damn shame how under-rated TJ and Earl 3 is. That's actually one that my brother and I picked up when I was a teenager and MAN that game has sooooo much personality. It's also a great mix of the first two game. Truly an uncharted hidden gem in the series
Wow, you completely missed the Sega Tunes soundtrack. The audio CD of T&E 2 soundtrack played by live musicians. One of my favorite soundtracks and you didn't even mention it existed. It really is a great soundtrack because they add in a bunch of guitar and saxophone solos.
Wow it's not that big of a deal for you to react like that about it. Your making it sound like he messed the whole video up when he's only talking about the video games themselves.
I love you daniel ibbertson! your thoughts line up with my same opinions in gaming especially with retro games. What a perfect time to drop this video! Thanks for what u do. I cant do patreon but I'm so glad of all the people that do so your on here.
I was a Genesis kid and was aware of this game but never played it. It was interesting to hear the history of the franchise. Also loved those nostalgic 90s adverts for the game. I miss how in your face and insane game commercials were back then. :)
I absolutely love this series! Toejam and Earl 3 had some crazy stuff with it, between the awesome dlc and the soundtrack later being used for Disney's ChooChoo Soul
My mom, my brother & I used to play TJ&E 3 all the time. I have really fond memories of us playing and quoting the characters- yelling "funkatron to earl, come in earl!" at my brother and "ROCKET SKATES" and whatnot. So, yeah, even a flop can have a really big impact on one young girl's family lol
Toejam&Earl is the only game that I played more often with a friend than Streets of Rage 1&2 as a kid. It's also why I'll be buying the Sega Classics collection for the Switch at some point, but I am HYPED for the new game.
Holy crap. John Baker. BBC Radiophonic legend. You hear the term "mind blown" so often that the phrase has lost meaning, but my mind was truly blown when his name came up. John Baker's Wiki has _nothing_ on this. That makes Toejam & Earl the very latest thing I'm personally aware he composed.
Thanks for this. I’m a huge TJ&E fan and I’m having a great time with Back in the Groove this weekend. I took a break to come up for air and found this video.
I loved playing this on my mega drive back in the day. Was loads of fun especially in 2 player. Played it on mega drive collection on PS4 a few months back. Still fun, still confusing as hell
I love how you used music from Vigilante 8 when you started talking about the 1970s! It's also very fitting to have music from a 1990s video game all about the most 90s video game ever made.
Thank you for another awesome Complete History on a SEGA franchise! The only thing that has broken my daughter's addiction to Mario Kart is Sonic And All-stars Racing Transformed. Which makes me wonder... why Danika Patrick and not these guys? Or Blaze?! Why Team Fortress and not these guys? Or Mr. X?!
I'd never played the first game until relatively recently (when I was in college so that was still like...6 years ago) but I remember my friend had the side scroller and I loved playing that. I'm proud to have been one of the backers on the new game, and I'm just really psyched that these funkadelic aliens continue to find new space to explore. Awesome video, dude.
I played Toejam and Earl 2 a lot as a kid (damn I miss the 90s); I only played the original recently on the Genesis Collection, so the sequel is the only one I have fond memories of.
No other game in history represents the 90s better than Toejam and Earl. I didn't even know what the goal was, and I still put COUNTLESS hours into this game.
I fondly remember the original game as one of the most fun games I every played. I remember me and my freind litteraly being in stiches laughing so hard and the crazy characters in this game. Good times. I didnt know there was a remake so I will definitely be picking up a copy. Nice video.
check out Star Control: Origins (2018). The star control series didn't have the great trading mechanisms that star flight did. But it's origins are from the same time as star flight. I don't feel it did the genre as well as Star Flight, but it's worth a look.
This may have been said already, but showing the game on "The Simpson's" and "Beavis and Butthead's" televisions was s stroke of genius. Really tied in with the running time capsule theme of the episode.
Please do DECAP attack! One of the weirdest games ever made but one of my favs as a child! I nearly burned my génesis out playing decapattack for countless hours!
Wow. This guy made "Starflight". You could make a hobby out of playing that game. I remember people had forums up on their bulletin boards specifically for hobbyists who were playing it. It came with this huge poster that was a map of the universe that you could tack on your wall and many of us did. It often required you to keep a notebook at your side to keep track of your travels and keep track of planets and worlds that you discovered. It was very much the "Elite" of it's day. I remember having a binder full of graph paper and notes set up specifically playing this game and having the map for it hanging on the wall above my computer. You would never see this kind of stuff with today's gaming. There was no hand holding. There was no on-screen pop-ups telling you where to go or what to do. You just flew where you wanted. Discovered what you found. Traded with or attacked who you wanted. Talked with who you wanted. it was a great game that was way ahead of it's time. It pushed my C64 to it's limits, I can tell you that. And that "Adventure Contruction Set" that he helped design on the C64 was nothing to sneeze at either. That, to this day, is one of the best, and most versitile little RPG programs that I've ever played with. And it does one thing that I've never seen any other RPG construction set ever do. Multiplayer. Nothing has done that. And it has features that are still lacking in the more advanced RPG game making crap we have today.
I remember seeing the game featured on some of the US adverts in 1991 before I had the system and I was definitely interested. I didn't get the game in the batch I got with the machine, but it would be one of the first rentals I would try for the Genesis. And it ended up being way more fun than I was expecting it to be. I bought it a bit later when I could buy a new game. It might have been the first Genesis game I got after that first Christmas batch. I ended up having to re-buy the game in the late 90s after my copy got "lost". It was always one of my favorite games on the system, so I had to buy another. I had a friend by several years ago to introduce him to the game in a co-op session and it went over well. I can understand why some people don't like the game. The main characters are nearly helpless and the game is basically a scavenger hunt. I shouldn't even like it, but it works well and I still think it's great fun. Good to see this covered and learn the story behind the game.
As a young kid playing the demo of this game on the OG xbox along with many other demos, this game left a big impact on my childhood for it's gameplay, style/design, and it's music.
I can honestly say as far as game creators go Greg Johnson is the absolute best. I backed 'back in the groove' on Kickstarter going back a few years ago. Whilst it was running I thought I'd be cheeky and ask him, if I sent him my copy of TJ&E and a postal order for him to send it back, he was happy to do that for me. Months passed and I asked if he had received my copy of the game. He said he hadn't and it turned out that it had been lost in the post. :( Being the absolute legend that Greg is, he grabbed a copy from his house signed it and shipped it to me, all from his own pocket! It sits at the top of my cabernet in my front room and is my pride and joy.
I shared the first TJ & E game with my class of 10 year olds. They asked "Mister, why do you like old weird games?" I said, "because it was the 90's, weird was cool"
My brother met Greg Johnson through his work, when Greg found out about our gaming background he invited us to test the new game. We loved it and even added a small amount of input into the game.
damn... i havent heard sesame's treet in ages.. miss that early 90s techno. now i have alpha team's speed racer techno song stuck in my head... Thanks Dx!
I was completely lost when playing toejam and Earl when I was a kid but I loved every minute of it. I had quite a few of those bizarre games that really were fun to play. I also had and loved the game called Ballz. It was a fighter where all the characters were made out of different sized balls
Great vid! Nice to see Toejam and Earl getting some love from the YT Community. I also did a video covering all the games. Although our styles were quite different 😉
@@thebestcentaur How do you know he's from the USA? For example, I'm in the USA and I didn't flinch when I heard him say it. I'm used to hearing Brits say all kinds of stupid crap.
@@Cyberwolfman Holy shit! For those who dont know the commenter above is the guy responsible for the all time classic "Pengiuns of Madagascar Get The N Word pass."
Ahh, so that's where Fortran comes from. It was a track on the Kerri Chandler album Computer Games (which includes a track where he samples the Dreamcast menu sounds!)
...not disappointed in the slightest... no, more like I love it! Thanks for shedding some light on this series for us who didn't know too much about it. The only gameplay I had ever experienced of it was that one level from the fangame, Mushroom Kingdom Fusion. I'll definitely get the newest game.
It was my input that saved the voice of ToeJam, Greg didn’t like how he sounded and was ready to hire another actor for a voiceover but I said I liked his voice, simply based on that Greg kept the original voiceover and the rest is history.
You know where else Toejam and Earl made a cameo appearance in? Wacky Worlds, a Mario Paint-esque game for the Genesis where players could grab and drop static sprites of Sega characters and other things and place them into different worlds... and that was more or less the entire game. It was kind of like the Art Alive game you mentioned.
the description of the OG Toejam & Earl is that it is a funky fresh co-op adventure game with roguelike elements to keep the game fresh and exciting for multiple playthroughs.
I would never have thought ugh-lympics had a connection with TJ&E , I was just thinking about that game yesterday but couldn't remember the name of it. My brother got TJ&E for Christmas the year it came out and we played the he'll out of it, I'll never forget finding the secret hot tub level, great memories
This was a fantastic video! Granted, I very much enjoy all your videos, but this one hits home with a game I very much enjoy. I was introduced to the sequel first ages ago at a friend's home when I was young, and while I like it, I came into contact with the first awhile later and I find myself agreeing that the first was better, BUT the sequel was a good change of pace that was still well made and fun to play in it's own right. I am insanely happy to find out that there is a 4th entry and a very fun looking remake of the first game, and to boot, as I found out on the official website, it's coming to the Switch! A console I just bought recently! Thanks very much for this video and letting us fans know about the fun history of this series, AND it's current entry!
The only issue I can think of with Starflight is, if you get it off GOG, because it is the original edition, make sure to MOVE YOUR SAVES. If you do not, it is programmed to rewrite its own code with changes to the galaxy and, as such, if you die, the game is bricked. You'll have to reinstall and, in the day, the disk and with it the entire game, would be bunk.
So many hours spent on both games, and now spending many playing it on the Switch. Funky and random fun all round. You've not lived til the fat lady sings (and causes Earthlings to explode).
So one day in 1994 aged 10 i was playing Toejam and Earl 1 with my friend. My brother returned from work at Electronics Boutique in Sunderland with his friend and handed me the cartridge Toejam and Earl 2! Most random moment in the 90's for me.
I'd only heard a rumour that there was a 4th game being developed, but didn't know it had been released. Sweet! Just hope it's on PC as well. :-) EDIT: Just looked on Steam. Jammin'!! :-D
FUN FACT: One pitched unmade episode for the cartoon Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog was a full on crossover with ToeJam and Earl! However, since THEIR motif is music, it should have happened in Sonic Underground instead.
My grandma used to play Toejam and Earl with me all the time when I was a kid. I'm pretty sure she only got the game because the name "Earl" was in the title. That happens to be my Grandpa's name, and mine, subsequently. Idk when they actually got it, but probably around 93 or 94, most likely. Since she got me hooked on it, I played all of the sequels. I can say from personal experience that T&J 2 was very disappointing. Not bad, but not what I wanted either. I played it, but I would end up still going back to the first one. Now I actually have fond memories of the third game. Idk about other fans, but I loved it, and I loved that OG Xbox. The kickstarter game is a really good remake. Oddly enough, I don't feel like the music has the same soul to it. Idk why, but when I listen to the OST from the first game, you can hear that the composer was having a great time. You can hear the 16 bit versions of the different instruments clearly. The melodies are good, the rhythym is great, and the fills are actually pretty brilliant. Especially the bass fills. I don't get that vibe from the kickstarter remake. It's a real band, but it doesn't sound like a band filled with musicians showing off their talents, which is what that original soundtrack is trying to simulate. Just imagine if the kickstarter game had Davie504 playing Bass... Then you'll understand what I mean.
As a kid I didn't understand how to play the original, so yeah, I liked Panic on Funkotron more too. But as I got older into my teens and revisited the series I certainly appreciate the original a lot more and like it a lot more too. Now as an adult I'm damned glad that Back in the Groove stuck to the original game's formula. (It's brilliant, btw. Started on it last night.)
"While plenty of other characters tend to be a tad annoying when injected up to the eyeballs with 'tude serum, for some reason Toejam and Earl do it right" I think that might be because Toejam and Earl aren't gonna give a damn what you think of them while characters like bubsy spout catchphrases constantly and see which one makes you chuckle out of pity, Toejam and Earl only wanna fly by earth and blast funky ass music.
Such a unique and enjoyable game on the genesis. It was tough to beat too. I only completed it on 2 players. Hard game to classify. I still cant think of another game in that gameplay style. The second one seemed very different. I havent tried the others, but loved the first. Great breakdown.
I was so excited to play TJ&E3 when I first got my xbox. I put it in the tray, ready to play, and everything went fubar. Drive chewed the disk so bad that the tray couldn't even open and I had to mail the whole xbox in for repair to avoid voiding the warranty. The disk was beyond unplayable after that and I never got another copy.
you know ive never actually played a game from this series despite hearing the name thrown around a bunch but i might have to make it a goal to play some of it now thanks yet again for expanding my gaming horizions
Enjoyed this look into this series. I must recommend the new game to my son who's coming 12 and probably at the perfect age for this. Of course he'll likely just play it and not have a clue what it's about then go back to fortnight.
I have TWO Physical Copies of ToeJam & Earl (1991) one I have in my possession and one My Mom still has to find either in her apartment or Her Basement Storage Unit (That Copy My Mom Has Was My Mom’s sister Lisa’s Copy. So, that Copy is very special to me.)

I actually had the NES version of the aforementioned Caveman Ugh-lympics, although the version I had was simply called "Caveman Games".
Great episode, Dan!
Being the absolute legend that Greg is, he grabbed a copy from his house signed it and shipped it to me, all from his own pocket!
It sits at the top of my cabernet in my front room and is my pride and joy.
YES, I love waking up to see a new video from you my guy.
I shared the first TJ & E game with my class of 10 year olds. They asked "Mister, why do you like old weird games?"
I said, "because it was the 90's, weird was cool"
My brother met Greg Johnson through his work, when Greg found out about our gaming background he invited us to test the new game. We loved it and even added a small amount of input into the game.
damn... i havent heard sesame's treet in ages.. miss that early 90s techno. now i have alpha team's speed racer techno song stuck in my head... Thanks Dx!

Literally the best character selection screen ever made for any video game ever, no contest.
It's a great one
I was completely lost when playing toejam and Earl when I was a kid but I loved every minute of it. I had quite a few of those bizarre games that really were fun to play. I also had and loved the game called Ballz. It was a fighter where all the characters were made out of different sized balls
I was looking for this exact video yesterday. bless you SGR.
Great vid! Nice to see Toejam and Earl getting some love from the YT Community. I also did a video covering all the games. Although our styles were quite different 😉
Wait did you really say Aladdin ball bag trousers

@@thebestcentaur How do you know he's from the USA? For example, I'm in the USA and I didn't flinch when I heard him say it. I'm used to hearing Brits say all kinds of stupid crap.

MRS. OBAMA GET DOWN
Toe Jam IS the hood.
& Earl is Da *BEAT.*
Panic on Funkatron is seriously the best game in the series.
I want a sequel to THAT game.
90 and 91 was still the 80's to me.
You forgot their cameo in the Sega Club game Wacky Worlds
It was my input that saved the voice of ToeJam, Greg didn’t like how he sounded and was ready to hire another actor for a voiceover but I said I liked his voice, simply based on that Greg kept the original voiceover and the rest is history.
You know where else Toejam and Earl made a cameo appearance in? Wacky Worlds, a Mario Paint-esque game for the Genesis where players could grab and drop static sprites of Sega characters and other things and place them into different worlds... and that was more or less the entire game. It was kind of like the Art Alive game you mentioned.
Wish they could’ve made another game like Toe Jam & Earl 3
the description of the OG Toejam & Earl is that it is a funky fresh co-op adventure game with roguelike elements to keep the game fresh and exciting for multiple playthroughs.
I was introduced to Toejam and Earl through TJ&E3 and I genuinely want to play Back in the Groove now.
Genesis will never stop being cool in my book.
I can't believe this video is 2 years old and I'm just seeing it. More people should be on TJ&E.
I would never have thought ugh-lympics had a connection with TJ&E , I was just thinking about that game yesterday but couldn't remember the name of it. My brother got TJ&E for Christmas the year it came out and we played the he'll out of it, I'll never forget finding the secret hot tub level, great memories
Back in the Groove's Social Media account is the BEST BRAND ACCOUNT EVER
Wrenchy247 agreed
Right next to the Sonic social media.
SEGA’s socials are so good that Nintendo’s are trying to copy SEGA’s style now!

One of my favorite series. I have all the games and have pre-ordered the LRG. Thanks Daniel!
My grandma bought that for my sister and I just randomly picking it up at the store on christmas. We played for years, never beat it lol.
So many hours spent on both games, and now spending many playing it on the Switch. Funky and random fun all round. You've not lived til the fat lady sings (and causes Earthlings to explode).
I came for Slope’s retrospective, I stayed for the orange soda...
I'm glad I decided to subscribe, instead of just binging. This video speaks to my soul.
Nintendo switch? Have to see if I can find a copy.
Limited run games has pre orders open until March 30th for physical copies for the Switch.
@@elgigante2001 thanks, just ordered one
So one day in 1994 aged 10 i was playing Toejam and Earl 1 with my friend. My brother returned from work at Electronics Boutique in Sunderland with his friend and handed me the cartridge Toejam and Earl 2! Most random moment in the 90's for me.
you definitely picked the right say, but how did you manage to hold off on making this so long man? WE'VE HUNGERED.
I'd only heard a rumour that there was a 4th game being developed, but didn't know it had been released. Sweet! Just hope it's on PC as well. :-)
EDIT: Just looked on Steam. Jammin'!! :-D
FUN FACT: One pitched unmade episode for the cartoon Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog was a full on crossover with ToeJam and Earl! However, since THEIR motif is music, it should have happened in Sonic Underground instead.
0:59 - ...Is that Larry? You cheeky thing, you.
Started on it last night.)
my older sister had this, r.i.p. saby, never forgotten, she had atari too, i finally got ninento and was in :) and genesis too to others
Woo kinglink reviews is in the shoutouts. Money well sent and a great series to talk about.
Following the twitter account and playing the games makes me feel like I'm in an episode of Black Mirror
"While plenty of other characters tend to be a tad annoying when injected up to the eyeballs with 'tude serum, for some reason Toejam and Earl do it right"
I think that might be because Toejam and Earl aren't gonna give a damn what you think of them while characters like bubsy spout catchphrases constantly and see which one makes you chuckle out of pity, Toejam and Earl only wanna fly by earth and blast funky ass music.
Well. Guess I should play these, eh? Thanks for giving the spotlight to the obscure.
Oh my, that Neverhood song in the video brings so much memories. Are you planning video on "Klaymen" games history?
Greetings from Poland!
