By far the best instructional videos on you tube in my opinion. He has a very easy to understand vocabulary even if you are not familiar with tattooing terms and the whole video flows so well from beginning to end.
Do you have to tune the machine differently to make it push magnums and shades as well as liners or do you just bump your power? You would think that having the added resistance of an elastic or membrane would require you to tune the machine differently than how you would for conventional needles. With coil machines you usually have 3 different machines tuned for 3 different applications liner, shader, and packer, how do you tune your machine to do all three do you put a heavier bar and springs on it and push more voltage? Do you need to have a specific set of coils like 8s, 10s, or 12s? I am just curious how you tune a coil machine to be more than a one trick pony is all. Thanks!
great vid my man ! loads of confucios videos out there mainly promo'ing different grips but this is whats needed ! simple straight and understandable, good work Sir !
WOW😲 That's amazing, yes I'm a beginner and I have learn so much with you. I've been looking for different sites and so far you are the best very humble, you take your time to at least answer and that say a lot you have a huge follower here. From Puerto Rico living in Boston , Massachusetts my best wishes for you
Hi Jono, what about spring setup, dont you need a higher power to run the cartridges and what about shader and colour packer don't you need to make any adjustments to the coils? Thanks for the video and your advice.
A slightly thicker gauge spring would be more advisable if you use lighter gauges already. As for the power I set it to the amount that gives me the correct ‘bog’ for the job and adjust the contact screw to hit the right cps. There’s only a few tweaks needed here and there from a standard setup to be honest. Thanks for watching!
@@JonoSmithTattoo The reason you'd have to re-tune your coil to run carts is that cartridges have back pressure built into them, and you'd need a harder-hitting coil machine to get the same results as you would if you were running standard needles with a tube, tip, and grip setup. This is the reason that I DON'T use carts on my coil machines. I have all of my coils set up exactly as I need them to run standard "on-bar" needles and a rubber band. I haven't touched my coils in years since I know for certain that they run as they should with an old-school needle bar and stainless steel tube and tip. If you ARE going to use this method of using carts on your coils and change your back spring as Jono suggests, I'd suggest buying a spring gauge so that you can get your coils back to its original tuning if you decide that you'd like to go back to needle bars and rubber bands. That, or just purchase a machine that is already set up to run with cartridges. Basically buy just about any rotary.
They just give you more length depending on what length tube you use. A longer bar will allow you to have the tube set further away from the machine. Thanks for watching!
Hey Jono, I watch every single video in full and I take away full understanding from every one of them. Can’t express how grateful I am.. Best on UA-cam Thankyou. 👌 Have a question that I can’t find an answer to anywhere.... When using coils, and the needle sticks out the tube, say a mag group for example, what angle should the tube be at in relation to the skin? Ie.... should the needle be resting against the underside of the tube, or should the tube be under the needle? I’m finding it hard to explain my question, but hopefully you know what I mean
Graham Bradley thanks for the great feedback and your support for the channel! I think I understand what you mean. So you want to position you needle in the following order in relation to the skin. Imagine 3 layers starting from the bottom going up. It’s would be 1:Skin 2:Tip 3:Needle. So basically you want the tip to be positioned between the skin and the needle (I’m assuming you’re using a V-Tip where the needle seats nicely to the back of it in the little groove. So basically you always (when possible) need the tip to be on the underside of the needle between the needle and the skin. Hope this helps!
Im super late to this party, but I had a question about using this with either a coil/rotary machine that requires rubber bands. does this remove the need for rubber bands or will I still need to set up a Spektra Direkt rotary machine using rubber bands as usual. Excellent video and can't wait to try it out for myself!
Started out learning with a rotary pen, but the more I'm learning in my apprenticeship and what I wanna do. It just doesn't have the punch I want, so I'm making the switch to a coil machine, I just have all these cartridges lol
Wish I'd seen this video before I bought a pen, defo my next purchase do you have a link to that particular kit? And thanks been binge watching your vids.
The machine is from Micky Sharpz which is: www.mickysharpz.com/ and the rest of the kit is from barber DTS which is www.barberdts.com/uk/ Thanks for watching!
no bending the needle bar! no rubber bands. good makes shit easier. Im thinking front spring and theres gotta be a spring in the cartridge also to keep the needle moving up and down. Most likely have to retune machines? And/or get a stiffer front spring possibly? Hmm
YES! You would most definitely have to re-tune your coil machines if you were going to use cartridges because cartridges have back pressure built into them. My suggestion? Buy a machine that is already set up to use carts and don't mess around with a coil machine that runs the way it should with a standard on-bar needle setup. That, or if you're curious and want to tune your coil to push carts, purchase a spring gauge so you can tune your coil back to the way it was before you messed around with it. Here's a link to a spring gauge: kingpintattoosupply.com/products/tattoo-supplies/tattoo-machine-parts/tools/spring-tension-gauge-stg - lmk if you have questions about how to use it.
Hi jono! Looks like we both have the same supplier 😎. I tried this a couple of years ago. I actually had my front spring snap. It’s because of the spring against the cartridge spring. You get a wave like motion that weakens the front spring. A bit like constantly bending a spoon,if you understand what I mean. I suppose a thicker spring (22+) with a touch less gap between the contact screw would work. The thing is you can’t spend as much time in the skin with this because of the the double hit . Potentially burger meat in the wrong hands. Keep up the great work. And take care. I’ve got the sabre DCX machine, which I never use . Have you tried them?
Thanks for the advice and the great comment! I’ll look out for this. I’ve never used that Sabre machine but I’m sure it’s great as they’re a really good quality company. Thanks for watching!
The only use for a rubber band is to help the needle seat into the tip but cartridges are already pre-set so there’s no need for an elastic band if using them. It will just put extra stain on your coils.
Most will work though some of them need a little alteration like the Dragonfly X2 & Stingray X2 both need the stay up spring removing as the resistance on the cartridge puts extra load on the motor.
I got the Kingpin Blue Tubes brand of these cartridge grips and am trying it on a NeoTat, the machine just keeps getting stuck and doesn't move unless I push it way far out where the needle doesn't even come out, I am confused if I'm doing something wrong?!
Sir can you tell me any best tattoo supply website that allows delivery in india? In india we have mumbai tattoo, tattoo gizmo.. but i wanted to know some other websites that delivers abroad
Ok so there’s a few reasons that cause this. It’s could be the needle isn’t seated correctly in the tip, you’re getting too much Vaseline in the tip when tattooing, machine is running too fast, needle is bouncing in the tip, drawing too much ink into the tip, to name a few. Hope this helps.
@@JonoSmithTattoo about the speed, I used your method to calculate the speed (lining using about 120), I THINK the needle is bouncing, because when I used to pack color with less speed, I could see the bounce of the needle
Allan Gonçalves So maybe turn your speed down a little maybe around 100 cps and make sure the needle is being held to the back of the tip with sufficient pressure either from an elastic band or a needle bar retainer if your machine has one.
