can you use coffee beans?

I presume you've found the answer, but to anyone else asking, no. You need to use a good grinder to grind your coffee beans as this machine, in common with 99.9% of espresso machines, does not grin the beans for you. Most good artisan coffee sellers will sell you pre-ground coffee if you'd rather not buy a grinder yourself, just make sure you choose espresso grind when ordering.

These machines are awful, they are nothing like they are in the ad. They create a lot of mess, and the steamer is only good for cappucino froth, it doesnt airate milk for lattes.
