    Keeping with our series of guides here in Guilty Gear Strive during the launch period, heres a vid to help you understand how damage works! Its hardly as simply as X move does Y damage in guilty gear, so lets learn about damage reduction values, GUTS, and all that!

      Yo, I hope you see this, because you have some of the best fg guides and I hope to see Nago get covered sometime in the future. Here's some things I tried in the lab:
      214 HS into teleport dash is a hard knockdown into great oki
      623 HS into teleport dash (after 1st hit) is a similar hard knockdown setup
      6 HS into teleport dash also has good oki
      far SS has a frame trap gap
      Experiment with framekills to time a meaty close slash or HS counter hit, command grab if they start blocking
      236 S into dash is plus on block and creates a strike/thow mixup (close S into combo if they mash, command grab if they block)
      (5K/close S) into delayed 6HS or 6K is a frame trap against jabs
      Command grab not only drains blood gauge but there is a brief time when special moves are practically free.
      Overall his strike/throw game is pretty strong, and blood rage isn't bad as long has you have meter going into it, then you can overdrive out of it.
      Hope this helps!

      @@GatsuRage only for the duration of the positive bonus. some nuance I just tested: the bonus can expire mid combo, but the timer will be extended to the end of a super animation, even if it's not a lock-in cinematic super.
      this can hypothetically cost you further bonus, because a second wall break will not extend or renew the timer, so if a super that was extending the bonus causes a wall break, the bonus will expire immediately after the stage transition, whereas a non super combo of equivalent length would have allowed the bonus to expire, then cause it to be refreshed on the second break.

    I think there might be a mistake in the vid. Having a guts value of 0 doesn’t mean you have *no* guts, just that it’s the lowest possible rating. That’s how it worked in other games, and I assume that’s how it works now, since there’s no concrete values yet, plus the fact that if Faust and Zato had no guts they would actually get killed in less hits than Chipp lol

    • @rooflemonger

      It’s actually 400, every character in the game when set to 4% health will not die from 15 dmg but will die from 16 dmg or more. 16 is 4% of 400. So it has to be 400 hp for everyone.

    • @Giraffinator
      @Giraffinator 3 роки тому +4

      @@TheLionHeart9 well, 4% of 420 is 16.8. I don't know how the game handles decimal health values, but if it rounds down, 16 points of damage would kill in either scenario.
      Edit: closest thing I could find on the matter is that in BBCF, calculated values are truncated after the decimal after calculating meter gain. It wouldn't be that much of a stretch to say ArcSys uses the same method across all of its meter calculations in their games.

    so this actually solves a minor mystery for me:
    all week i feel like i have been winning a weirdly high percentage of comeback wins and very close wins. funny part is the bulk of my competive/ranked experience has been SFV/MK11/DBFZ, games with famously strong comeback mechanics, so i feel like i know how/why i get comeback wins, but strive doesnt have that "loose hit into VT activation, combo into CA" so it's puzzling me.
    well, the twist to my little story is im an anji main. ive known about the guts system for years cause i think every Xrd commentor had some sort of moral obligation to mention it once per match, but i never knew i would be a serious beneficiary of it one day. thank you ASW game balance team: fair game, honest game, good game

  • @LegateSprinkles

    I think one thing these videos have shown why a lot of people may be opposed to diving into fighting games is just how so many fighting games DON'T tell you these invisible systems even exist. Things just happen. Im not saying that all the statistic values need to be shown, it would just be nice for the actual games to let you know these things are at work.

Since GG wants players to be aggressive all the time, it makes sense to make your character the strongest when they are close to dying to encourage you to still play aggressive at lower health because you can trade better, assuming your opponent has higher HP than you do.

They engineered this system to make damage, lifeleads and comebacks more dramatic.It's intentional.It's also why if you watch old guilty gear, when players try to kill, they do very weird combos with a lot of small attacks. • @Chille0
    @Chille0 3 роки тому +1

    I am wondering about the comments on how to adjust your play based on how guts works. For instance you mention big hits earlier on etc. It seems to me that if all hits across the board are scaled that probably the best move is just to always play your normal style. For instance once folks are at max guts, the optimal moves for damaging should always just be whatever your max damage combo would be the time, right? (which would be what you would want to go for anyways at any point in time). Maybe there are a few very niche situations where you could somehow figure out how to change a combo halfway through to maximize the damage because of guts, but even then since guts is always working in the same way (shrinking damage as the combo continues) then also every combo you know should always just be the same to maximize damage I would think. And its not like you have a choice when playing as to which move is going to hit your opponent, so I would think the best is just to play your usual style at all times of what you think will open them up and then whatever the highest damage combo is that you know. I have lots more thoughts on this but will stop there xD in conclusion I would think guts would never actually alter someones actual decision making processes in a real match.

I went through the roster just kinda mashing buttons but did best with elphelt. I ended up taking a game after I kinda learned buttons and from then I was hooked. At first I thought the game was kinda simple compared to SF6 but the more I play the more I realize that is just wrong. All these hidden mechanics are really cool. Part of me doesn't like the damage scaling on lower health but overall I think its cool as it leads to more low health come backs. I come from melee where it really is simple when it comes to health and damage at least. Execution though.. its the hardest game I have ever played and I love it.

Let's be real in the heat of the battle NONE going to be paying attention to the health exact % when landing hits and / or combos... if u get a hit u wont goin to make your most strong attack alone and that's it, no, ur goin to land ur most stronger and optimal combo regardless and that's what you should do, not only because of the damage but because most combos corner carry towards the corner which is the worst situation possible you can put your opponent in.

    People say guts is a comeback mechanic so I always assumed it only applied at the start of each combo but now I know it checks for every hit it doesn’t seem like much of a comeback mechanic since both players have to deal with it. Not like X factor.
    Even then I think it would be an interesting discussion video since for things like X factor both players do get it even the one in the lead so does that make it fair.

      Chipp is fine. Yes he takes much more damage that is true, but he also has many more options than most. Chipp can take 2-3 turns for every 1 turn the enemy gets, and that's his true strength.

    I had no idea about these damages systems. TBH they seem utterly gratuitous. Has Arcsys ever explained why they made the damage system so complex and opaque when they could have just had high health and low health characters? Is there some benefit to doing it this way that I’m missing?

      In Xrd if one guy had 50%HP at round end he actually only took 1/3rd-ish of damage he could take.
      But the game says it was a [100% - 50%] match instead of a [100% - 33%] wash.
      I've heard people say it's to sell the illusion of games being closer then they really are, thereby making tensionless matches thrilling adding hype.

    • @supernebula101
      @supernebula101 3 роки тому

      It's another way to add character complexity. For instance, Chipp has always had the weakest defense rating, but among the highest Guts ratings, meaning his life bar is easy to take chunks out of, but harder to finish off. On the other hand, a character like Robo-Ky in +R has a strong defense rating of .89, but 0 Guts, making him consistently hard to whittle down. It gets even more complex in older games with Bear Stun and different levels of stun resistance.

    • @DexDavican
      @DexDavican 2 роки тому

      Since the earlier games, Guilty Gear has consistently introduced comeback mechanics, from Burst to Guts to combo damage reduction. Guts is more subtle-players don’t necessarily realize that they’re taking less damage as the round continues, but over repeated matches they internalize that a round isn’t over just because you’re low on health. It’s a psychological effect that encourages players to turn the round around.

    Is guts always active? Say I'm doing a big 'ol 70% combo with Nagoriyuki. Is the guts scale increasing during the combo along with regular combo scaling?

    • @rooflemonger
      @rooflemonger  3 роки тому +1

      once you hit the guts brackets its always active yes, each successive hit will check where they are on the scaling and scale accordingly. Thats why big single hit moves are better because they only check one time.

    Guts applies at damage dealt, not combo start right? As in if I start a combo at 70%, and there's a hit at 60% does it get the 60% guts value at that hit, or does it stick with the guts value from the initiation?

    • @rooflemonger
      @rooflemonger  3 роки тому

      guts checks at every single hit applied at every single tier of health starting at 70%. If you start at 70% and theres a hit at 60%, it applies the 60% guts value. This is why single big hit moves are much more valuable in defeating guts it just checks at that first hit.
