It would be a bit more editing work, but I think you should adopt the "damage" vfx from the Halo series:
2 bars onscreen. Health, and shields above that. Taking hits depletes your shields, which recharge if you avoid getting hit for a few seconds. If the shields collapse, you start taking actual damage.
