The "heat wave" effect is a natural phenomenom called mirage, with rising heat causing image distortion. It is just that the higher zoom picks up the mirage.
Yes you can! In the video menu you can set autofocus mode for single AF or continuos AF. I use single AF as it does not continuously try to focus thus sometimes losing focus. With single AF you can focus yourself and the focus stays fixed.
Actually, at long distances and with such level of zooooom, light refraction through the air should be more noticeable since it always happens, even if ambient temperature is, say *medium*... so that "heatwave effect" is just that and probably nothing to do with zoom mechanics.
Plz. don't dislike the video if you don't like the product, The likes are for the review/ reviewer not for the the product, I think there is nothing to dislike about reviewer!
BY FAR, the BEST camera review I've seen yet. My problem w/this camera is that the zoom doesn't work in movie mode. I also don't get sound in some settings. Any help is greatly appreciated. Gracias, amigo.
I use this camera alot whenever i film. It's a great camera but the auto focus is like filming while drunk and high at the same time. The low light sensitivity is too much for the camera to manage, but it's a great camera, no doubt. Depending on the camera from Sony, both NIkon and Sony have their ups and downs. Honestly I feel like Canon has the best cameras, but that's just me. Still it is a great camera.
Hahaha that ending was epic! This was my first time watching one of your videos and I'm so glad I did. you mix humor with facts perfectly and I loved it! Thank you for being you.
I’ve had this camera for years and haven’t been able to figure out how to do a multiple exposure shots. I’m pretty sure the programming is there, I just don’t know where to find it in the menu.
i've had this camera about a week and i love it, but it's not without it's flaws .. he's right about the autofocus, but depends what you want out of it, i mean, i use the manual focus on everything, using the side toggle, press center button to get a close up of you subject, quickly focus, snap picture, you can quickly and intuitively adjust the shutter speed and aperture on the fly, a utilitarian 'slide' indicates 'correct' exposure .. the zoom is a bit clunky in it's operation, when ..
I had this camera and loved it I'd like to get back into taking photos again what would you recommend now in present day In a similar price range but better picture quality.
He was just giving us an example. He said the same problem occurred in all of his tests, which means not just that one. You should check the beginning of the video where he films the boat because you can see there it still happens.
I followed your advice, finally. I went back to Black's and they exchanged my Nikon for the Canon. I am waiting for my battery to be charged to see how good a move it was ! Thanks :)
ok so im trying to decide on this camera or another one i have a coupld of points that i wanna get out there. 1 if your basing your camera on taking video y not get a VIDEO camera 2 if you wana get a gps go get a GPS 3 most of the features you spoke about in the video are comparable to a dlsr and once again if you wana dlsr get one 4 if your planning on shooting at zoom levels with video of course its going to become out of focus This camera would be verry good in my opinion for taking pictures
with my Panasonic Lumix FZ 150 with only a charged battery I make about 900 photos and about 2,30 hours in videos mode - so having 2 battery you can work all the time you need to finish every thing you are recording .
Interested in this camera but need good video capability for videoing aircraft. Up to the task or not ? The zoom sounds noisy in action on other reviews but the main concern is loss of focus on zoom in / out , no good when trying to capture a 380 airbus coming toward you from a mile away, or are the reviews harsh ?
What's your thoughts about shooting coins with the 510? Especially dimes? Can you use macro mode while zoomed in? I'm pretty confident you can just asking. I have this cam on my list. An entry level DSLR with a macro lens will set me back $700 + or -.
Nikon P520< Fuji SL 1000( 50X) < Canon SX 50< sONY DSC HX300. For me the best is now Sony with 1300 mm but in past I was dreaming about Canon..I wonder what Olympus and Nikon will do - because they stay far away back in the lens competition. One good thing is that Nikon P510 and 520 got very very good filming mode. But not ultrasonic motor or couldn't take on filters :(
I bought the P100 when the superzooms came out and hate the stabilization flaws. The 500 was just more zoom with an undersized sensor. The Panisonic and Canon destroy Nikon in every facet of super zoom. No point in spending 400+ on one of these when you can have a dSLR for 150 more. If I wanted a super zoom, the SX40 combined with CHDK is the clear winner.
thanks for the review Mike...I was seriously considering buying this , but now I'm not so keen...especially seeing that it has only an eight second exposure limit...i do lot's of night photography...what would you recommend as the best buy for cameras in this class?
would you recommend this camera for a concert and/or filming videos for youtube (like beauty gurus things coz you said the focus is bad :/) ?? :) thx for the review!!!
I have a D5100 and I knew this thing was like 5 times zoom like I have now, so I had my expectations. But when I saw you zoom in, my jaw just dropped and the zoom was still going AND going O.O Thanks for the review, now I really WANT the P510!!! (Don't care about the lags, for the rest I have the D5100 ^^) and honestly, for that price it's an terrific all rounder! Only thing that REALLY nags me, is the little battery. 240-250 shots??!! That's nothing :/
He's right though, it is no DSLR, it'a a point and shoot. That being said, I like how it has some manual controls like those found on DSLR's, however it's image quality and functionality will never come close to that of a DSLR.
It took me forever too, make sure you change the dial on top to either one of the M A S P (Manual, Shutter, and etc...) go to menu and continue down settings till u see ISO sensitivity...your welcome
At 6:10 you mention a "heat wave effect" being caused by the IS. You do realize that at 1000mm focal length, it is very rare to have a clear enough day to take a sharp shot at infinity, and that these heat waves are actually caused by the atmosphere?
Hi Mike, any test of the Sony Cyber Shot DSC-HX200V 18.2 Mega Pixel H Series 30x Optical Zoom coming in the works. Keen to learn how you think it stacks up against the Nikon, Canon & Panasonic Super Zooms !
I'm deciding between this camera and the Canon Poweshot sx50. My last camera was 18x while good I would like to find something with more zoom that still takes great photos. Zoom is important as I am disabled and I love to photograph wildlife and nature. Also would like a camera that can do depth of field shots and that is good in low light situations. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thx
Hye, All I am looking for is image quality, this one is 16MP and the Canon HS50 has only 12MP, do you know if the pixels on the Nikon really make a difference?
You haven't mentioned about the battery. How long does it last on a single charge in exclusive image mode and in video shooting modes (separately)? Where does p510 stand when compared to hx100v & 200v in terms of battery?
Hi Mike, I want to buy long zoom camera . which is the best in Video and Image quality. among this Sony HX200V, Nikon P510 Canon SX40.i don't want to go with FZ150. Please Do Reply..Thank you.
Hey here, i am considering getting this camera, mostly for its movie functions. but before i get it i need to know the following things: 1.does the camera have a full manual mode (shutter speed, iso and apeture) 2.does the 720p @ 60fps High speed look decent and look the same as 720p@30fps in normal HD mode. thanks
hey Mike, Please tell me which camera is best for pics and vids from following cams Canon SX40IS, Nikon P510, Sony HX200V Please do reply i asked this question some days ago but you didn't reply.
Thanks. I think I'll go back to Black's and try to exchange it. Does it take good short movies ? I want to take it to India. I would love the raw shooting ! I miss it with this coolpix.
Is there any point-and-shoot camera which has a manual zoom control, like the ones available in DSLRs? I don't want to go and buy a DSLR yet as I'm an amateur photographer but I do want manual zoom control as this t and w control isn't that good.
This camera with MOV movies, is incompatible with the Movie Market. There is no way to edit the film (cut, paste, etc.). The converters allow market failures in the movies.
Yes I do agree with you. the Night videos are really amazing! totally noiseless...
Shutter Authority lol
It is 2023 and I'm using this camera to learn 😅 it was my moms
Same….starting today…was also my moms 😅
Also starting today. Also my moms lol
Haha same, it was my dad's.
Just got mine from my mum, buying a charger and a few spare batteries to get started.
Just got mine from a coworker!! This thing rocks!!

I gotta admit, this review is just BEAST !
very very great job, man
I got this camera, no complaints, I really love. Also I have a Canon EOS T3i and most of my best pictures are taken with my Nikon p510
Actually, at long distances and with such level of zooooom, light refraction through the air should be more noticeable since it always happens, even if ambient temperature is, say *medium*... so that "heatwave effect" is just that and probably nothing to do with zoom mechanics.

work trust me .... maybe your photo device is hurt ...or don't work good

Love the Beatles mug!!!!!! And the camera. Just going to say its a great camera from personal experience.
fantastic thorough review
I’ve had this camera for years and haven’t been able to figure out how to do a multiple exposure shots. I’m pretty sure the programming is there, I just don’t know where to find it in the menu.
love your reviews

Bought on last year to take to St. Thomas got some great pictures. It's worth every dime
I followed your advice, finally. I went back to Black's and they exchanged my Nikon for the Canon. I am waiting for my battery to be charged to see how good a move it was ! Thanks :)
Just replaced my broken L820 with the p510, nice review.
2023 looks nice I’m leading photography with a canon t6i and now I want this too
great review. the problem at the GPS might be related to a problem on that specific camera or area, These things happen.
Sir we can use this camera to take a short flims....
Great review, nailed the auto focus issue. I'm pretty happy with all else.
ok so im trying to decide on this camera or another one i have a coupld of points that i wanna get out there.

Believe me.This camera is fine for videos.

But other wise its as good as a camcorder.

among this Sony HX200V, Nikon P510 Canon SX40.i don't want to go with FZ150.

does it have manual focus mode?
Pretty sure that at 6:16 you're seeing CMOS jello, not the OIS at play. Very common failing with this type of sensor.
