Gotta get ready before I open that door. Gotta get ready before I open that door. Gotta beat up that smug pile of muscles and apologize to Asterius afterwards.
It’s so satisfying learning this after coming back from 6 months of not being able to play this with pick. These hades videos really kickstarted my bass journey thank you so much
oh maaaan this is SO bringing back those chariots that chased you around and the little blue dudes you had to kill twice and those pink butterfly balls AHAHAHAHA...so awesome!!!
I'm hoping to pick up bass soon and this cover will be my reference for where I'd like to end up with enough practice, like I want to play this song so bad and your cover is the perfect video for the visual of that. Also just fun to listen to as the bass is my favorite part of this song!
This is fantastic! I've been hoping to find this ever since I first cleared a room in Elysium and heard the rest of music cutout leaving just the bass line.
If this is a new format, I like it a lot! The scrolling notes/tabs up to are great (thanks for keeping the bass key to the left!), the angle is perfect for learning, and it’s a perfect chance to see your handiwork in action more often. =)
Excellent, thank you! I'd been thinking about how often I'd see piano arrangements and transcriptions performed with piano roll (Embers!). That, along with seeing a person's hands, is such a great learning tool. But we don't have anything like that for fretted stringed instruments, so I cooked this format up with that concept in mind. If it's useful/enjoyable for enough people, I can certainly do more of this!
@@ScottPenick It definitely is! And I truly appreciate the notes along with the tabs - since it means I can kinda sorta recreate it on the bouzouki too!
I love this bassline and you definitely did it justice, but that ascending section is pretty painful on the stretching, without having my strings make clunky noises because there's not enough pressure on the fret or my finger is just on the actual fret line lol.
Yeah it's not easy. For what it's worth if there was a mic in the room I recorded this in you'd have heard the clunky finger noises very very loudly. But the recording is just a DI into my audio interface (into a virtual bass amp).
It's a lot of fun! The Hades soundtrack is good for us fingerstyle guitar players because to my ears, it sounds like everything played with a pick, so our precious fingernails can remain safe from those oppressive bass strings.
Not pictured: many many hours practicing this slowly to a metronome, ticking up the speed only when I was able to play it cleanly. You could also play that whole section up an octave, around the 7th fret. Still sounds great.
If you’re still making these tutorials, may I request Scourge of the Furies? really wanna learn the song but I’m new to bass so it’d be cool to have a video to follow along to
I'd also love to see scourge of the furies, and coral crown from hades 2! These videos are so helpful ! Doesn't look like they have uploaded recently, hopefully they are doing well!
Ooh same, that would be cool. I am new to bass as well and Hades II has inspired me to learn some tracks, I am writing some tabs but idk where/how to share them, do you want me to link them here in the replies once I’m done and can figure that out? 😭
Unfortunately I think practicing it slowly is key. Make sure you're alternate picking (or, if using fingers, strictly alternating which one you're using), and with your left hand, pressing down on the frets with only exactly as much tension as you need. Use a metronome to play it cleanly, and slowly bump it up. If your hands are too tired to play it cleanly, set your bass down and play through a fresh Hades run :P I do wonder if Darren originally played this an octave higher (~7th fret, starting on the A string), and pitch-shifted it down. The OST has a kind of wonky quality to the distortion that makes me suspect this could be the case. At that part of the fretboard it's a lot easier to play. For what it's worth, this video is certainly not 'take 1'. On the day I decided to record, it was an afternoon of frustration before I finally got through all the way cleanly.
@@ScottPenick Thank you very much for the clarification and great advice. Very good performance, too. I enjoy the technically rigorous jumps of this piece (for my level), and I want to use it as a stretch exercise/application.
i know im very late, but do you think you could include the beat measurements someplace in the video? i always get stuck on those while playing bc I am I bad at keeping time LMAO
@@ScottPenick the number the note lands on, like 1 e and a 2, just labelled? If that explains it properly LMAO I'm not the greatest at explaining music stuff lol Regardless I wanna give this one a try, no matter how bad I am at harder patterns c:
@@captaincronus3958 Shoot, well, that's all in the sheet music but I'm not good at reading rhythms fluidly either. I think most important is to listen closely and 'feel' the groove. As best you're able, listen to this recording and play along! {it's recorded to a click track, so should be very rhythmically solid}
I know I am 3 years late, but better late than never, maybe you'll see this :D Incredibly ispireing for a begginer like me ( I tried picking but went back to finger styyle, I can't wrap my head around the pick x) ) I was wondering, do you use any kind of pedal for the distorsion, because when I paly the first part, it sounds great but not as gritty at all
Just random stuff from BiasFX Tonecloud until I got a sound that was a close approximation that sounded good. You can find them all by searching 'Hades' there. Apparently they're modeled after real pedals but I don't know anything about any of that, I mostly play fingerstyle acoustic guitar and did these as a fun off-shoot.
Ibanez GSR200B: www.ibanez.com/usa/products/detail/gsr200b_02.html It's a very simple, cheap instrument. But it feels nice in my hands and to me it sounds great.
Thanks (I think?)! The picking pattern is what came out naturally to hit the accented notes I'm not a believer in strict up-down patterns or economy picking or anything like that. The only instrument I play with a pick is a bass guitar (to protect my precious fingernails for guitar), so I kinda just... do what feels right.
@@ScottPenick ohh that makes sense (sorry this is 2 yrs late LOL), as someone who recently picked up bass guitar I’ve been so sad about not getting to keep all my fingernails like I usually would for acoustic 💔 but I really don’t like how my bass playing sounds with a pick, so I’ve had to compromise. maybe I’ll try out using a pick again with different techniques or something, cuz I really love the tone you’ve achieved here!! fits so well
