Excellent video. I did the same trail about 4 years ago, but instead of returning via the ridge, I rock-hopped down the creek and back over the saddle which is just above the Lower Portal rock pool. It is steep and slippery af, but manageable! I laughed when you said "snake city", because that's what it is. That grassy area descending into the campsite is probably the hairiest section for snakes, although I've seen several along the creek itself - mostly red bellies and green tree snakes. I enjoy seeing them, but am definitely cautious and always give them space. I would definitely do this bushwalk again. Beautiful country :)
Thanks Neil, it’s such a great little escape. Haven’t tried rock hopping back down the creek, sounds cool; may have to give that a go next time. Snakes, I know right; really didn’t enjoy bush bashing to find my way back onto the trail, was very sketchy 😬😂
@@joe_outdoors_australia If you do the rock hop, Joe, take a few large garbage bags with you so you can bag your gear. In fact, double bag it. From memory, there are a couple of rocky or awkward sections that are made so much easier if you just swim down the creek and float your gear with you. Not a difficult walk at all, but if there's a lot of water in the creek, this will save you some time. The best rockpool for a swim is directly beneath the Mt Barney Falls. 12:25 is where you walked up to the top of the ridge from the Lower Portals rockpool. Returning from the creek on the ruturn journey, you will ascend from the other side back to this point. Too easy :)
Thanks for the video. I’m heading on this walk overnight in the coming weeks based on a map on AllTrails. Watched your video as part of my nav research. Cheers
We're off to Barney Gorge campsite this weekend (10/11 July). Tried it last winter and got up that big ridge from Lower Portals and turned back to Lower Portals campsite as one of the blokes with us was feeling it and was struggling. That Lower Portals campsite is pretty well laid out and magic to listen to the creek tumbling over the rocks nearby. Watching this video to see the part of the route I didn't get to see last time (we turned back at that first rock scramble at the top of the ridge). Really looking forward to this hike now - hopefully we are the only ones there ;)
Sounds great, such a beautiful place - I think you’d done the hardest part last time - making it up that hill from lower portals was a real workout; but lower portals camp ground was a great decision too; agree, sound of the water and serenity is superb. I was hoping to get Barney gorge camp ground to myself as well, I was sure I would considering it had been storming lol; was still awesome none the less.. Have a great time 😊
You’re not wrong mate, mt barney is such an awesome place to hike and camp. We just camped at lower portals but hiked in at 7:30pm wet and very humid, Felt like it took longer in the dark....10kg pack didn’t help though but all worth it in the end. Like your stuff mate, Keep it up. I’ll wait for the logan ridge vid....never climbed barney but I will soon.
Definitely, such a cool place; lower portals are beautiful. Sounds like you hiked it under tough conditions - solid 👍🏼 I’ll be sure to put some footage up on Logan’s - when weather cools down I’ll give it a go. Thanks for the comment - Barney Summit is pretty special, so nice up there, hope you get to experience it soon - happy hiking 🤙🏽😄
Thank you for your video clip. I agree Mt Barney is awesome. I have not been that far to the Junction camp site. Would love to have guidance of Logan Ridge.
Hi Thanh; thanks for your comment. I haven’t done Logan Ridge yet but when I do will be sure to log it so I can share a gpx file. If you’re into group hikes - The Fast and Furious hike group on Meetups do regular hikes around the region and hike Logan’s Ridge at least once a year. May be worth checking out 😄
