[31/10, 2:43 PM] Anshuman: The two laws of chemical combination are
    1. Law of conservation of mass:
The law of conservation of mass states that mass in an isolated system is neither created nor destroyed by chemical reactions or physical transformations. According to the law of conservation of mass, the mass of the products in a chemical reaction must equal the mass of the reactants.
    2. Law of definite proportions:
The law of definite proportions, also called Proust's law or the law of definite composition, or law of constant composition states that a given chemical compound always contains its component elements in fixed ratio (by weight) and does not depend on its source and method of preparation.
[31/10, 2:44 PM] Anshuman: All matter is made up of tiny, indivisible particles called atoms.
All atoms of a specific element are identical in mass, size, and other properties. However, atoms of different element exhibit different properties and vary in mass and size.
Atoms can neither be created nor destroyed. Furthermore, atoms cannot be divided into smaller particles.
Atoms of different elements can combine with each other in fixed whole-number ratios in order to form compounds.
Atoms can be rearranged, combined, or separated in chemical reactions.
[31/10, 2:47 PM] Anshuman: Atom:- An atom is the smallest unit of an element.
In an atom, subatomic particles like protons and neutrons are present inside the nucleus and negatively charged electrons are present in the extranuclear part.
Compound:-Compounds are chemical substances made up of two or more elements that are chemically bound together in a fixed ratio.
Molecule:-The molecules of an element are constituted by the same type of atoms
[31/10, 2:48 PM] Anshuman: Atoms generally exist as molecules of elements and molecules of compounds. Example(molecules of elements) oxygen molecule is formed by the combination of two oxygen atoms. Another example is water molecule
    H
    2
    O
(molecules of compounds) which has two hydrogens and one oxygen atom
The atoms of noble gases (eg. He, Ne, etc.) are unreactive and exist in the free state (as a single atom). But atoms of many elements are very reactive and usually exist either in the form of molecules or ions.
[31/10, 2:49 PM] Anshuman: Atomic mass in an atom or group of an atom is the sum of the masses of protons, neutrons and electrons.
The gram atomic mass of an element can be defined as the mass of one mole of atoms of a particular element.
[31/10, 2:53 PM] Anshuman: The molecular mass of a substance is relative mass of its molecules as compared with mass of C-12 atom taken as 12 units.
Gram molecular mass is the molecular mass of a substance (in amu) expressed in grams or it is the mass in grams which is numerically equal to its molecular mass. It is the same as the molar mass.
[31/10, 2:54 PM] Anshuman: A symbol of an element is the short form used to represent an individual element or the atoms of the elements. Most of the symbols were derived from the names only. Other symbols have been taken from the names of elements in Latin, German, or Greek.
    Example:
    1) Symbol O refers to oxygen. This symbol of oxygen is formed from the first letter of oxygen i.e. O.
    2) The symbol for sodium is Na which is derived from the Latin word Natrium.
    (b) Significance of Symbol H are:
    i. It represents hydrogen as an element.
ii. It represents one atom of hydrogen element.
iii. It also represents one mole of hydrogen atoms.
[31/10, 2:58 PM] Anshuman: NaCl- Sodium Chloride
    KCl- Potassium Chloride
    MgCl2- Magnesium Chloride
    Al2O3- Aluminium Oxide
    NaOH- Sodium Hydroxide
    CuSO4- Copper Sulphate
    MgO- Magnesium Oxide
    NO2- Nitrogen Dioxide

    [31/10, 7:07 PM] Anshuman: Question 5.
Had he earned any money before that? In what way?
    Answer:
Yes, he earned money before also. He used to collect the tamarind seeds and sell them to a provision shop on the Mosque Street. A day’s collection would fetch him the princely sum of one anna.
II. Answer each of these questions in a short paragraph (about 30 words).
    Question 1.
    How does the author describe:
    his father
    his mother
    himself?
    Answer:
The author describes his father as a wise and generous person. He felt happy when he helped others. He did not have much formal education and riches. He was a man of confidence and great wisdom. He avoided inessential comforts and luxuries.
His mother was a noble and kind- hearted woman. She used to feed a large number of people. She had all the attributes of a typical Indian mother.
I was born into a middle-class Tamil family. I was a short boy with rather undistinguished looks, born to tall and handsome parents. I studied physics and aerospace engineering and became a scientist.
    Question 2.
What characteristics does he say he inherited from his parents?
    Answer:
The author inherited humility and benevolence from his parents. He learnt lessons in honesty and integrity from his parents. He was self-disciplined because of his parents’ exemplary life.
    [31/10, 7:07 PM] Anshuman: Question 1.
“ On the whole, the small society of Rameswaram was very rigid in terms of the segregation of different social groups,” says the author.
Which social groups does he mention? Were these groups easily identifiable (for example, by the way they dressed)?
Were they aware only of their differences or did they also naturally share friendships and experiences? (Think of the bedtime stories in Kalam’s house; of who his friends were ; and of what used to take place in the pond near his house.)
The author speaks both of people who were very aware of the differences among them and those who tried to bridge these differences. Can you identify such people in the text?
Narrate two incidents that show how differences can be created, and also how they can be resolved. How can people change their attitudes?
    Answer:
The author talks about the people who belong to various castes and follow various religious preachings. Yes, these groups were easily identifiable. Their dressing, traditions, culture and rituals were different.
They did share their personal experiences and friendships. Lakshmana Sastry summoned the teacher who separated the author and his friend in the class and told him that he should not spread the poison of social inequality and communal intolerance in the minds of innocent children.
The school teacher encouraged communal differences and Lakshmana Sastry and Sivasubramania Iyer discouraged this malpractice.
The influential people can do both the things. A teacher has the ability to bridge communal differences and can play with sentiments of the innocent and ignorant people. This is what the new teacher did. But the Science teacher Sivasubramania Iyer changed his wife’s attitude and showed her the right path.
    Question 2.
Why did Abdul Kalam want to leave Rameswaram?
What did his father say to this?
What do you think his words mean? Why do you think he spoke those words?
    Answer:
Abdul Kalam wanted to leave Rameswaram to study at the district headquarters in Ramanathapuram.
His father said that he knew he had to go away to grow. He gave the example of a seagull and said that a seagull flies across the sun alone and without a nest.
He spoke these words because he intended to hone his skills. He knew the harsh reality of life that children may have to live far from their parents to make their career and earn their livelihood. So he showed his wisdom and intelligence in uttering these words
    [31/10, 7:08 PM] Anshuman: Question 2.
    Now answer the following questions.
    1. What are the things that can erupt? Use examples to explain the various meanings of erupt. Now do the same for the word surge. What things can surge?
    2. What are the meanings of the word trace and which of the meanings is closest to the word in the text?
    3. Can you find the word undistinguished in your dictionary? (If not, look up the word distinguished and say what undistinguished must mean.)
    [31/10, 7:08 PM] Anshuman: Answers:
    1. An earthquake can erupt. Emotions can erupt. Anger can erupt.
Example: An earthquake erupted in Sicily last night.
Surge means a sudden powerful forward or upward movement. A wave surges. A crowd surges. A storm surges.
Example: Birds search for fish when waves surge towards the shore.
    2. ‘Trace’ means to find out, to copy, to draw an outline, etc. ‘Finding out’ is the closest meaning to ‘trace’ in the text.
    3. I can’t find the word ‘undistinguished’ in my dictionary because it is not the root word. It is there under the word ‘distinguished’ because ‘undistinguished’ is opposite to ‘distinguished’. It means: not specific, not prominent, not distinct, etc.

    [27/10, 7:53 PM] Anshuman: Question 3.
What happened to the old lady when Saint Peter cursed her?
    Answer:
Saint Peter became angry at her greed because she did not give a piece of cake to Saint Peter to satiate his hunger. When he cursed the lady, she turned into a bird. She flew through the chimney. Finally, she became a woodpecker. She wore a red cap and her body was black. Besides, she was bound to live in the forest with scanty food.
    Question 4.
Describe the landscape of the Northland as described in the poem.
    Answer:
The Northland is far away in the north. In this land of snow and ice, the days are very short. The nights are too long. When it snows, they harness swift reindeer to the sledges. Children are packed with so many layers of clothes to protect from the cold. In their funny and furry clothes they look like cubs of bears.
    [27/10, 7:53 PM] Anshuman: Question 5.
Why does the poet tell a story which he does not believe to be true?
    Answer:
The poet wants to tell a ‘curious’ story. It is the story of St. Peter and a greedy little woman. The poet himself doesn’t believe in the truth of the story. But still he is compelled to tell this story simply for one reason. The story gives a moral lesson. Greed is an evil trait in man. It is punished in the end. The greedy little woman who didn’t want to give a small piece of cake to hungry St. Peter was cursed to be a woodpecker. She had to live with little food. We should show human qualities in our behaviour.
    Question 6.
Who was St. Peter and why did he come to the cottage of a little woman?
    Answer:
St. Peter was a holy man and a Christian saint. He went around different places preaching the people. Too much travelling made him tired and hungry. He needed food and rest badly. Therefore, he came to the cottage of a little woman who was making cakes. He asked the woman to give one from her store of cakes to him.
    Question 7.
Why did the little woman knead another and still a smaller cake?
    Answer:
St. Peter asked the little woman to give one cake from her store of cakes. The little woman made a very little piece of cake to give it to the hungry Saint Peter. However, even that little piece seemed too large to be given away. Therefore, the greedy little woman kneaded another and still a smaller cake.
    Question 8.
Why did the little old woman had to struggle for her scanty food after she was cursed to be a woodpecker?
    Answer:
The greedy little woman denied hungry St Peter even a small piece of cake. She made a very small piece of cake but it seemed too large to her to be given away. She went on making it still small and smaller. She was cursed by St. Peter to be a woodpecker. She was made to struggle even for her scanty food. As a woodpecker, she went on boring to get a small morsel of food.
    Long answer type questions
    Question 1.
A holy man should not curse the lady. Justify this statement in the context of the poem ‘A Legend of the Northland’.
    Answer:
A holy man is known for his wisdom. He teaches moral lessons to the people whether they are liberal or greedy. All are equal in his eyes. In the present story, Saint Peter is a holy man. He is also famous for his preaching. He has preached and travelled a lot. So, he is hungry. He asks the lady for some food but she does not share her food with him. Finally, the saint becomes angry and curses her. In fact, he should have shown some mercy and the example of his wisdom. Therefore, it is appropriate to say that a holy man should not curse the lady.
    Question 2.
How can you say that the old lady was greedy?
    Answer:
The old lady was running a bakery. Saint Peter was a wise saint. He had travelled and preached a lot so he was tired and hungry. He had arrived at her door for some food. Still the lady made him wait for the cake for a long time. Every time she tried to bake too small cake but unfortunately the cake often seemed to her of a bigger size. The old lady did not want to share the cake of this size with the saint. At last, the saint grew angry and cursed her. So, it can be said that her greed had no limit.

[01/11, 7:48 PM] Anshuman: One fine day, a guru and his disciple visited the kingdom and were surprised about the reverse rules set by the king and his ministers. They were more astonished to find out that everything in the kingdom cost a single rupee only. The guru and his disciple were happy initially as they could buy anything by just spending a rupee. However, the guru understood that it was not a wise decision to stay in a kingdom of fools, so he left. His disciple was unwilling to leave the kingdom because of the ready availability of good food at a reasonable rate. He was a big foodie and ate plenty of food and grew fat in a matter of a few days.
One day, a thief broke into the house of a rich merchant by making a huge hole in the wall and sneaked in. While he was returning with the stolen items, the wall of the house collapsed on his head, killing him instantly. However, the thief’s brother approached the king and complained to him that the house owner (merchant) should be punished for not building a strong wall. The king immediately summoned the merchant to his court.
When the merchant arrived, he blamed the bricklayer for building a weak wall. The bricklayer, an old man, was called to the king’s court and pleaded with the king to punish the dancing girl for distracting his attention from work as she went to and fro that street all day wearing jingling anklets. The dancing girl who had become old now blamed the goldsmith as he had delayed his work and made her walk up and down that street several times. Soon, the goldsmith was brought into the king’s court, who said that he was busy attending a rich merchant’s orders that time due to some wedding rituals in his family.
It was, therefore, ruled out that this merchant was the same house owner whose wall had collapsed on the burglar. The merchant pleaded that his father was the one who ordered the jewellery and he was dead already. But, the king decided to punish the merchant for his father’s deeds. A new stake was ordered to proceed with the execution. However, the merchant was extremely thin to fit the execution stake. So, the king ordered to search for a fat man to fit the stake. The king’s men searched the entire kingdom and found the disciple as an ideal fit for the stake. But as he was innocent, he pleaded with the king not to punish him for others’ deeds. Since, it was a kingdom of fools, no one listened to him.
Waiting for his execution, the disciple then remembered his guru’s words and requested him to help him. His guru who was blessed with magical powers could see his disciple’s condition in his vision. At once, he arrived to save his disciple. He quietly whispered some words in his disciple’s ears. Then, he requested the king to punish him instead of his disciple. However, when the disciple heard this, he requested the king to put the stake on him as he was brought there for execution first.
Puzzled about who should die first; the king asked to resolve the conflict, the guru dubiously told him that whoever would die on the stake first would be reborn as the future king of that kingdom. The one who died next would become the key minister of the kingdom. The king was baffled and did not want to lose his kingdom to someone else in the subsequent life. So, he had a discussion with his minister and finally concluded that they should go on the stake to continue being the king and minister in the next life. That night, they secretly went to the prison and set free the guru along with his disciple.
The next morning, the king and his minister who disguised themselves as the guru and his disciple were executed on the stake. When the people of the kingdom saw that the king along with his minister were executed, they made the guru and his disciple as their king and minister, respectively. Although the guru was hesitant initially, he finally gave in and reversed the rules of the kingdom and the people began leading a normal life like other kingdoms.
    [01/11, 7:48 PM] Anshuman: Summary
