    How touching to hear Leonard Nimoy refer to it as "Mother Russia" since he's Russian by heritage.

      Especially when their crowned relatives in England should have taken them in..that's what you do for your family--you support each other not throw them to the wolves and let them be dragged to the basement, lined up against a wall and shot like rabid dogs. Who needs enemies when you've got kin like this?

    • @pjmbidge632000
      @pjmbidge632000 9 років тому +7

      Linda Roy I think you need to read up on your history a little. England was at war with Germany, the Russians were about broker a peace agreement between themselves and Germany, that would of released 350,000 German troops to fight against the allies on the western front. The Romanov family were not held in great favour by the British Royal Family.
      You have also to bear in mind the The German Kaiser, Wilhelm II, The British King, George V and the Russian Tsar Nicholas Romanov were all cousins, but Kaiser Wilhelm who was allied with Russia, did nothing to help the Romanovs either, there was no close relationship between them. If there had been a good relationship the 1st World War might never of happened, and history would have been changed forever.

      Luna Sol i agree with you but only to the children.
      Im afraid, as the head of state, the tzar and his wife had to go,thats the price you pay for ruling badly,but the children, no! This should not have happened to them.

      Luna Sol I've always wondered if the firing squad ever had a moment's regret later in life about shooting unarmed women and children or was it a case of "I was just following orders"?

      Looking back on this comment I think I was a little to lenient on the fact that the bourgeoise is a despicable thing that destroys the lives of the worker. Was Lenin justified in doing this. I don't know... Different perspectives reveal different thinking patterns.

      Flattery? god no, not to my eyes anyway. He looked untrustworthy right from the beginning to me anyway. He was an out and out schemer and opportunist who took advantage of the Tsarina's weak mind, body, judgement and her family.

      Saoirse Kavanagh You are probably right. But my own personal life experiment tells me do not judge people by their looks. I once i had a boyfriend who's got an angelic face, i felt he had to be trustworthy, turned out I was wrong. Maybe I am just lousy at this game. :-)

    I'm very sympathetic to the Romanov's, they didn't deserve an execution. But daddybear443 is just saying his opinion. In fact, he didn't insult the Romanov's, he just said they're dead, which they are. You can't report someone to UA-cam or take their account down because you don't like their opinion. That's the whole point of freedom of speech, he's allowed to say what he thinks about this topic, and you're allowed to say you disagree.

    According to what I read Paul, son of Catherine the Great hated his mother and hated women and created the Pauline Law forbiding any woman to ascend. From what a historian told me, Nicholas II was about to change the succession rules in 1900 when he didnt think he was going to have a son, so Olga would have been the Czarina.

    This is a History Channel program. Some things have to be "dumbed down" a little for general viewers because ultimately the history of the Romanov family is a huge topic to be broaching in the span of an hour! Before minute three, people already familiar with the family will spot a few examples of over simplification. That being said this is an entertaining special and I'd recommend it.

    I wonder if Olga had been allowed to rule that the family would still be alive today. Think about it: if she had, would the Czarina been so dependant on Rasputin, whose closeness to the family only alienated the royal family from it's subjects. And whose direct meddling in government appointments during WW1 needlessly imperiled Russian soldiers and the government's stability and effectiveness? Difficult to say, really.

    • @SaoirseK
      @SaoirseK 8 років тому +3

      Another tantalising "what if" story to the Romanov family. I agree, had the Pauline Laws not been in effect and Olga been granted her birthright would the family be alive today either by monarchy or just simply living as citizens? It's one that's always pondered my mind, i've always believed Olga would've been a fine Empress. She definitely had the natural makings of one.

  • @russianglittergym
    @russianglittergym 13 років тому

    @GrandDukeAlonso It's usually said "one of the daughters". Most likely Tatiana, Maria or Anastasia, because Olga was shot in the head and died immediately. But even though we know no one survived, I've always thought it was Anastasia.

    All four? There are five... And the DNA tests proved that they have a similar DNA sequence to the Tsar and Tsarina, DNA doesn't say whether it is Olga/Maria/Tatiana/or Anastasia, that would of been determined by the appearance of the body before decomposition. The boy was the only obvious one. I think it is unlikely that anyone escaped the execution, but unless I was there I can't say whether it did or did not happen.

    from 1906-1917 Russia and grand duchy of Finland had a constitutional government (parliament) even the communist Bolsheviks party had 6 seats in the state Duma (after 1912 elections) But under the Dictatorial Communist government of Lenin,Trotsky and Stalin millions and millions of people were killed,in tsarist russia every kind of political opinion were represented by Duma,Semestovo councils and of course by the univercitys and Unions of teachers,doctors,Artists and Intellectuals.There for its a trajedy that the Russia was forced to go to war and later the communist revolution and civill war thus ending the golden age of the russian litterateur,liberalism,history,Silver age.

    its difficult to feel bad for the last czar and family. they had chance after chance to give some autonomy to the russians, survive as a constitutional monorachy and they failed to do so. the thing that is so awful is they had 4 teenage daughters that were also murdered. i think the english crown had a lot to answer for when they refused them entry into britian. stupidity does not go well w/absolute power. nicholas family (his uncle esp) warned him time after time. as far as the comment about jews, there were many that were leading bolsheviks and members of the red army, ie troksky. perhaps because of the pogroms and discrimination, they were more extreme. just a guess, but one shouldnt paint the bolsheviks w/too broad a jewish brush. most of them - old bolsheviks - were whacked later by stalin

    anne anderson the woman who claimed to be Anastaisa is dead anyway and since Anastasia was the youngest daughter of course they would be dead by now but all the bodies/bones have been found so they all died together. Which is better than one of them going through that experiance and surviving to be alone with those teribble memories of watching their whole family be shot to death.

    why is the Tzar's many and sorrid affairs where he disgraced, shamed, and alieniated his wife and daughters not mentioned? Just because history isn't pretty or nice doesn't mean it should be left out of an educational documentary. That caused HUGE problems in his marriage and resentment in his daughters I can't understand why something that relevant would be whitewashed out.

    PS One of the things that Rasputin did to help Alexei was he wouldn't let the Tsar and Tsarina or the doctors give Alexei aspirin, which is the worst thing you could give a hemophiliac. I do think he had some kind of mystical healing powers due to the fact that for 10 years, Rasputin ALWAYS healed Alexei. Not a coincidence either.

But let's be frank: Nicholas II had proven himself to have been incompetent long before the arrival of Rasputin on the scene. It is a very common error for Americans to say they are Irish, Italian, English, etc when they are Americans of those ancestry. I am American and have held American passports for decades-all my ancestors emigrated from Italy so it is correct to say “I am American of Italian ancestry.”I do not have an Italian passport as both my parents and I were born in the USA so are all American citizens.

    I question the motives of their demise. what did it accomplish? The country stayed impovershed and poor, corruption continued and the KGB was born. I do not believe the czar would have started reforms but, I think the country was better off in Romanov rule. They ruled for 300 years and the country folded in less than 100.

      The KGB wasn't born until after WWII. After the Russian Revolution the country saw great achievements in education, science, technology, culture, jobs, house, and so on. Work days were reduced to 8 hour shifts with meal breaks and workers were granted a one month vacation annually. Under the Czar more than half of Russia was dirt poor, illiterate, worked 12 to 16 hours days without breaks, and the country lagged behind much of Europe. Please do some homework before posting such comments.

      wallstreet05 Not through the Czar or even Kerensky; whose governments depended upon the backwardness of Russian society. It wouldn't have developed anymore than Tibet would have under the Dalai Lama.

      Yes empire declined, but has improved the lives of ordinary people
      and the empire is unnecessary us, she takes away only and exhausts forces of the Russian people which to have to contain and serve the outskirts of the empire
      So What - Dick on empire

    Their death is the cause of the mistakes of Empress Alexandra and Tsar Nicholas, it was fatal mistakes. But it seems that they shouldn't had been executed that way.

    what propaganda are u referring to ? i have been fascinated by the Romanovs for years, i can't get enough of their story and in particular, when Anastasia was reported to have escaped the killings and was living somewhere in Europe. The awful way the family died was disgusting, and was beyond comprehension

    dont forget that Nicholas obviously was behind a lot of murders himself. I understand the sympathy, i agree that those kids didn´t deserve this, but what about millions of children dying in Africa right now? instead of crying about the romanovs that initiative and help those kids.

    Interesting to see how you can think of the 'common rabble' as lazy. Many of those people who you dismiss worked very hard just to keep their families alive in a largely agrarian society. That was their priority and only concern. Read about the Russian famine of 1891-1892 (its on the internet somewhere) and compare their lifestyles with that of the royal family.

    i dont understand why george v. didnt bring the family to england. the british royals knew what would happen. was the czarina stupid or was she so worried about her son that she could not make rational judgements. i still cant understand the power of rasputin.
