I've only read North and South and I really liked it. I like the sound of the other Gaskell novels you talk about, but before I read any of them I might re-read North and South.
I loved your chat about Mrs. Gaskell 's novels. I read them in the last year. Brilliant and innovative ur-feminist writer. I must say I would have included the funny and lovely Cranford. Good work.
I've never read any of her works, but this is such a cool idea for a video! And I think I've told you this before, but I LOVE that you use this platform to openly talk about your faith! It inspires me to do be more open too!
Oooh, that's sounds awesome! I got to see Juliet Stevenson in a Samuel Beckett play in London. She was amazing! I can imagine she'd do a great job with Mary Barton.
I only discovered Gaskell earlier this year and I wish I’d found her sooner! I adored North and South, and I’m reading Wives and Daughters at the moment for Victober. I can’t wait to read all of her work 💕
Hello Megan, I'm so pleased to have found you. I'm also a book lover! I read a lot but also, listen to many books from Librivox. I never heard of this author but I had watched, the American tv show North and South. I ended up here because, I Googled 'what's the best book, by Gaskell?'. Thank you for your reviews. Please don't give up coming here. I'd only love to hear from you. Maybe, we could discuss some books that we've read? I had to give a lot of my books, to charity and friends because I have no book shelves! My favourite genres are the Russian Revolution era, WW2 era, anything about the ancient worlds and that includes more recent empires, ie The Ottoman Empire. I love historical fiction too, for example I have read pretty much all of Phillipa Gregory's books. Her Tudor series is great plus she has a few, nice stand alone novels too. I love the quentissential classics too, ie books by Dickens, Loiusa May Alcott, Thomas Hardy, Daniel Dafoe, Dumas, The Bronte sisters, Jules Verne etc I can't recall who wrote the likes of Gone with the Wind, Laurence of Arabia, Wuthering Heights, Dr. Zhivago, Ben HUR etc pretty much any book that was made into a movie genre, the epic. I also enjoy traditional fairy tales, in their original forms and folk tales from around the world. I think, that's it! The past 2 days, I listened to Alice in Wonderland and The Communist Manifesto! I'm currently reading Communism, Colour and Common Sense by Manning Johnson. I'm only reading them, for educational purposes because I'm apolitical! I love autobiographies and true stories of human resilience and bravery. I hate chick lit unless, it's a classic. Please let me know what you like to read? Stay safe, God bless, love Mathona in Ireland xx
Wow, it sounds like you have a wonderfully broad love of reading! That's great to hear how you found my video. I love that miniseries of North and South. It's one of my favourites. Like you, I love World War 2 books, Louisa May Alcott and the Bronte's. Jane Austen and LM Montgomery are definitely forever favourites. It's great to hear from you!
I read The Old Nurse's Story at the beginning of the month for Victober and really enjoyed it. I will read more by Gaskell in the future and am very happy to see North and South at the top of your list since that's the other book by her we have on our shelf. 😊
What a great video! You make me want to pick up Wives and Daughters this instant! Your thoughts on Ruth were really great. I've heard such mixed things about it and Sylvia's Lovers that I thought I might read them just to read them and get them off the bucket list. I think now I will go in with a better attitude. I just adore your channel and also appreciate your openness about faith.
I loved North and South, as well as the BBC adaptation; my God, both were wonderful. My only issue in re-reading the novel is the cat thing toward the end tbh--
That's good to hear that you're wanting some more of those since I have a lot more to say on the topic! I'll see if I can get an Anne video out in the next couple of weeks. 😊
Yes. I see this alot in Victorian novels. They know Bible but not the Gospel and it does get a little off putting. Sometimes I just want to throw the book and say You don't have to do that. Your forgiven because of Christ!🤦
North and South was my favorite book that I read last year! I did lots of underlining and notes in the margin!
It's such a good one! I love to write all over my books too 😊
Thanks for this! I still can't believe I haven't read North and South. It's my greatest Victorian failing.
Haha, it's such a good one!
I've only read North and South and I really liked it. I like the sound of the other Gaskell novels you talk about, but before I read any of them I might re-read North and South.
It's a very re-readable book, that's for sure!
This was so helpful. I didn't read Gaskell for Victober, but everyone was talking about Gaskell and I didn't know where to start. Thanks.
I'm glad it was helpful. I started with North and South and that was the perfect place for me to start!
I love your enthusiasm.
Thanks, Sarah! I love your's too ❤
I loved your chat about Mrs. Gaskell 's novels. I read them in the last year. Brilliant and innovative ur-feminist writer. I must say I would have included the funny and lovely Cranford. Good work.
Cranford is delightful. I really love what they did with the mini-series. So glad you read all of her novels!
I love Gaskell.I wrote a book about her.

Great video! I'm currently loving Mary Barton narrated by Juliet Stevenson. Love this narrator!!
Oooh, that's sounds awesome! I got to see Juliet Stevenson in a Samuel Beckett play in London. She was amazing! I can imagine she'd do a great job with Mary Barton.
@@meghanthestorygirl4581 I didn't realize she acts in plays! I will have to look her up online. She narrates many classic audiobooks on audible.
@@springintoreading7225 She's also a great film actor! She's in a version of Nicholas Nickleby as Mrs Squeers.
I will definitely look up her films to watch. Thank you
Love your enthusiasm for Elizabeth Gaskell.
I’ve only read North & South by her. I need to get to the other ones!
They're so good! A lot of people have Wives and Daughters as their favourite, so I'd recommend going there next.
I only discovered Gaskell earlier this year and I wish I’d found her sooner! I adored North and South, and I’m reading Wives and Daughters at the moment for Victober. I can’t wait to read all of her work 💕
I'm so glad you've discovered her. She's truly amazing!

Thanks so much, Jennifer! I am loving your channel too. I can't wait for more of your content and more discussions with you!
I have read 3 of her works so far and loved all of them! So far, my favorite is Wives and Daughters, but they are all good!
Yes, she's such a well rounded, versatile author! I loved watching your Cranford videos this past week 😊
Your order is so similar to mine! Great video and :)
I remember your week of Gaskell so well. That was one thing that encouraged me to read all her works!
Do you have a good reads ? Love your attitude about books it makes me wanna read all the Elizabeth Gaskell novels ❤️
Thanks so much! I have a Goodreads account under Meghan the Story Girl, but I don't really go on there much lol
I read North and South and remember loving it, but it was so long ago and the details are lost on me. I’m definitely due for a reread!
Yes, it's a great one to reread!
I do love Gaskell..I wrote my book about her.
North and South is the only Elizabeth Gaskell that I've read. Now I really want to go read her others!
She's so good and each of her works are very different from each other. I would definitely recommend all of them!

I've only read North and South and really didn't like it, but I'm keen to give Gaskell another go at some point. Great video!
Oh, interesting, I'd be curious to hear what you think of Mary Barton as it's North and South's prototype with quite a different plot though.
You are the kind of girl that every parent wants their son to bring home.
Aw, thanks so much!
I loved North and South, as well as the BBC adaptation; my God, both were wonderful. My only issue in re-reading the novel is the cat thing toward the end tbh--
Oh, I know! Super weird, right?
Can we see some “All about Anne” videos?
That's good to hear that you're wanting some more of those since I have a lot more to say on the topic! I'll see if I can get an Anne video out in the next couple of weeks. 😊
yeah
Mary Barton and Slyia's lovers should have film apodation
Totally!
Cranford is best!
You are beautiful.
Yes. I see this alot in Victorian novels. They know Bible but not the Gospel and it does get a little off putting. Sometimes I just want to throw the book and say You don't have to do that. Your forgiven because of Christ!🤦
Yes, exactly! We do good BECAUSE we are loved and saved by God, not to get that love or be saved.
