  • They have left us this Continental typewriter from 1943.
As we see it is in a pretty good condition. We are only going to do a basic cleaning and tune-up, to increase its value, in case someone of you is in the same situation. You can see some more complex restorations in the screen links.
This machine is dirty, the bar that protects the keys and the carriage return levers have bad paint, a key bezel and glass are missing, some letters do not work well, and the end-of-line chime does not sound.
We start by disassembling some easy-to-remove parts and cleaning with a brush and a vacuum cleaner.
We continue with the bottom part removing the rubber feet to clean them thoroughly, as well as the entire area with water, soap and a brush. Drying it with a cloth.
Once it is well cleaned, we grease and put the feet back on.
We repeat the cleaning process all over the exterior of the machine.
Also the parts that we have disassembled. We must be careful not to lose any screw or small part.
Some chrome parts can be cleaned with solvent, taking care that they do not fall into areas painted black or that they can be damaged.
The interior part is cleaned from the holes that allow us to do it. Always very careful not to spoil anything.
Let's fix the bell problem. To access the mechanism well, we must disassemble one of the tape holders. We will clean the mechanism well with solvent, grease it and force it to move.
    We reassemble the tape holder.
Now we are going to paint the damaged areas. First we sand with water-based sandpaper for metal.
We cover the areas that are not going to be painted and paint with spray paint.
We wax all the parts painted in black.
    We reassemble all the pieces.
We make the trim for the missing piece with one of the metals from a mask. We paint a paper to put on the key and an acetate that acts as a glass.
We hide imperfections with metal paint.
    Finally we change the tape.
    And ready!
With almost 80 years but working like the first day.
    Thank you!.
Clean and fine-tune to revalue typewriter.
