  • Arizona State University launched an unprecedented academic partnership in 2018 with the internationally-acclaimed light and space artist James Turrell. Roden Crater is an unprecedented large-scale artwork created within a volcanic cinder cone near Flagstaff in the Painted Desert region of Northern Arizona. Within this volcano, Turrell is sculpting discrete viewing spaces and chambers in which individuals may experience the light from celestial objects and observe the cosmos.
Roden Crater academic programs at ASU aim to provide educational experiences for learners of all ages. Programs demonstrate the power of art to transform thinking and to work at disciplinary intersections. Field labs, design studios, internships, virtual and embodied learning opportunities are designed by faculty working across ASU. Courses build on James Turrell’s vision and the rich cosmic, geologic and human histories of the U.S. Southwest.

I'd like more info on the acoustic properties of the spaces. Roden's little room at the deYoung Museum sculpture garden almost demands the experiencer to make sounds inside it. I do that with every interesting enclosed space anyway, if it's not disruptive. Some of Richard Serra's work does great things with vocal sounds or fist-hammering on the steel.
