The reason why Cedar Fair did this was to see if the hydraulic launch system could work over 100mph because they were thinking about building Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point. The coaster was originally going to use either LSM launches or LIM launches, however the park would have had to remove Gemini. Cedar Point didn't want to do that so Intamin decided to use the hydraulic system of launch.
My guess is somewhere in the range of -3 to -4 g's at least....your body would more than likely rip in half at the waist, your legs staying in the train or you'd have some major internal injuries.
This is what made Dragster happen without having to remove the classic Gemini. PS: I thought that there was no way video of this existed but I am amazed. Keep up the good work.
I can’t be the only one who is genuinely surprised the train didn’t fly off on the second run. Like, just watch it. It looks like something the GP would make in RCT!
I can infer that this is real because I have personally ridden the ride many times before watching this video and when you go up to words the drop, the coaster usually slowly goes over the edge but in these two test runs, they whip over the edge much quicker than usual.
Holy shit😳! Xcelerator is one of the only coasters it's hard for me to put my hands up on the launch cause im just chicken shit and it's so damn intense! I couldn't imagine 100 plus! That shit looks like it's moving in fast motion!
Does this mean that any Intamin accelerator can have its speed changed? If so then Rita should have its launch increased to 85mph so it actually has something worthwhile
What if that top hat was an "inside" one like MR. FREEZE? Maybe the riders could deal with "some strong" g-forces even after the completely insane launch at 112 or 117 mph! :'D
Then after TTD, Intamin wanted to push hydraulics even further and that eventually led to Kingda Ka a few years later on 2005. Still the tallest and second fastest (Formula Rossa took that crown away from Kingda Ka with its 149 MPH top speed) full-circuit roller coaster in the world standing at 456 feet in height. I wonder how much further Intamin is gonna push hydraulics in a launch system? will we eventually see the world's first peta coaster? a coaster that stands more than 500 feet tall with a speed of 160 MPH or greater? Who knows? It is certainly a possibility. I sure know one day Kingda Ka's height is gonna be eclipsed sometime in the future. would it be tomorrow (it is March 1st at the time this comment is typed up)? or further down the line? who knows? only time will tell.
Where did the info on the actual launch speeds come from? I don't doubt that it's launching faster than normal, but 112mph and 117mph seem a little unrealistic, maybe.... Red Force climbs to a height of 367ft (almost double Xcelerator) with basically a 112mph launch. The first train (112mph) in this video doesn't like it's going anywhere near fast enough to continue rising to almost double the height! The second train (117mph) is clearly going quote fast over the top. But then Top Thrill Dragster has a height of 420ft (more than double Xcelerator) with a speed of 120mph. So when comparing these figures to other coasters, they don't seem to add up that well I wouldn't be surprised if the launches were like 90mph and 100mph. Both of which would still be epic to experience when it's designed to go 82mph! 😆
Would cause too much stress on the track and trains, also the intense g's going over that top hat would likely kill you, or at least make you pass out.
I'm pretty sure the airtime over the top hat wouldn't be harmful since it takes hours upon hours of hanging upside down to even get injured from it, but yeah they would need some carbon nanotube upstop wheels on this thing to ensure the upstops didn't break
“Then they do a 50 mile per hour test run..then a 500 mile per hour test run..and a 1,000 mile per ho-And it OPENS TO THE PUBLIC LOOK AT THAT. :) (reference to A brief history of Xelerator

I'm pretty sure they didn't intend to do this and Intamin was just playing with it to see how the hydraulic launch system would react to launching a train above 100 miles per hour. remember, top thrill dragster had been ordered at this time, and top thrill dragster was originally going to use LSMs instead of a hydraulic launch. It was switched to a hydraulic launch because Intamin offered to do so to shorten the launch track and let Gemini live.

Carson’s Coasters Many cities have limit caps for their structures. Buildings (or anything else) are only permitted to reach a certain height. "Suburban" places in particular don't tend like big-ass (and noisy) structures in the middle of their town.
In addition, taller rides need more surronding room to support them, and some places just don't have the open space capacity to pull them off.
Jonathan Washington but in this exact park they have a ride that is 312 feet tall and this is only 205 feet
Carson’s Coasters it was the first of its kind

that would be cool if they sped it up a little to make it a little faster but safe since it's capable of it
Unless your head is completely on the headrest, you’d probably be dead before the end of the launch.
Do dodonpa accelerates even faster than this
you do realize there are coasters in the world that still accelerate faster than the 119 mph test run right? lmao
The real problem is that the top hat is way too short for those speeds. The negative Gs at the top would be deadly.
there is no way that's 117 mph. it's much faster than 82 mph but that wouldn't make it even halfway up ttd
