  • This video is for all of you who made it to the CIF SS Finals.
    Go to around 6:19.
    Pause the video and you will note that each image is sharp (unlike blurry video) so that each screenshot is a 12MP photo.
    BTW - this is my version of the Finals so I get full creative control; many had assumed I work for hdRunner and started complaining about the laggy livestream! - nope we're just good friends who are helping each other out for the greater good of the sport (and if you've a problem with my videos, give hdRunner an earful about PoMan inept riding skills while multi-tasking on a bike!).
    Technical notes for those looking to do their own filming. Contact me if you want more details.
    1. The cameras must be able to record in 4k 60fps for more than 6 hours without overheating. I usually set up 5 cameras (1 on the bike, 1 at start, 1 at somewhere along the course that has good lighting and 2 at the finishes). You will need two 256GB v60 SD cards for each camera and USB-c PD capable battery for each 4K so camera can be recording for more than 6 hours.
    2. The bike has its own headaches but after this season (i.e., battery, controller, motor and chain, auxiliary power), it's very reliable, being able to do 20 races on flat courses and 12 races on Mt. SAC. Bike has no problem climbing Mt. SAC, the problem is keeping the front end down going up hill!
    3. The camera suspension arm (Tilta Hydra Alien Arm) can support 20 lbs of camera gear hanging out the back. I have run two cameras, a DJI Ronin 4D about 10lbs (from hdRunner) on top for livestreaming and my sony camera mounted on a Ronin gimbal on the bottom about 6 lbs.
    4. To edit these 4K videos from 4 cameras and 8K from the bikecam, you will need Apple's Mac Ultra Studio computer with 128Gb of RAM (Windows computers are useless for this work) and at least 12TB in SSD for working files (because each meet generates 10-12TB of data) and 125TB in normal storage for back up (this is why I'm deleting every prior year and UA-cam is my storage).
    5. Edit the video using Final Cut Pro X or Da Vinci Resolve. You have to know all the basics of video editing, including simultaneous editing of up to 7 cameras at the same time (multicam mode). I tell people I went to film school for this part: it's called University of UA-cam.
    6. How was I motivated to put all of the above into what you see now? It started with XC and TF in high school and understanding that with small consistent, conscious efforts tied to an intended result, one can achieve that result and sometimes more! These runners are living through this same epiphany that I had.

    What an excellent video, maybe you should look into the NCAA employing you to improve their camera work. I love how you focused on the other competitors and I am looking forward to seeing how far Sadie can take it this year.

      I do have a day job but hopefully if they can see that a parent/volunteer is able to get this kind of images, may be they'll up their game. BTW I hated watching the NCAA broadcast with the blurry jerky videos.

      By the way, do you know if the course was shortened? Sadie is an incredible runner but her time in the 15s is in unheard of.@@pomanprod

    Excellent quality video. Very nice job. The performance by Sadie is simply incredible. Hopefully most can appreciate just how good that was, because it was off the charts good!

    Kudos for staying well focused on the action. I watched several other races this weekend and sadly there were way too many shots from too far away or else the camera operator had no idea about how to keep the camera on topic, resulting in long zigzagging shots of trees. Again, well done!

      thank you for the kind words! my previous hobby was modifying cars (until they blow up) and everyone hated it (noise, exhaust and greasy mess). This one hobby no one has complained once in 4 years!

    Cross Country is really Cross Concrete here. But, great competitors here and fast times.

    Running XC on the roads...Where is the challenge?

      They are setting XC back 60 years. My 1st so called XC race was in Butte, Mt. on 11/11/62. It was a Veterans day race.

    According to the times, Engelhardt was about 400 meters ahead of second place. Sadie will have a tremendous junior year. She will keep breaking HS records.

    Sadie is #1, Rylee is #2 an Holly is #3. Sadie and Rylee don't look like they're running fast all. Holly has the most dramatic running form (superhero sprinting the entire 3 miles!). ca.milesplit.com/meets/580975-cif-southern-section-finals-2023/results/989906/formatted/?event=f3milefinalsFinals

    Sadie looks and runs like she is a few years older than everyone else. Amazing!!! Is this an easy-ish course since a bunch of girls were well under 17

    • @donshields2379
      @donshields2379 9 місяців тому

      There are many girls running under 17 minutes nation wide. You get some running under 16 minutes. So, the course had nothing to do with it. Although the concrete and pavement may have given them better footing.

    Here is second place Arielle in a documentary made about her 3 years ago: ua-cam.com/video/I7hJVbt-EMM/v-deo.html
    Arielle started running early like before 10 years old and even with that headstart, it wasn't that easy to stay in second place.

    This race coarse can not be the state of our endeavors in sport. No disrespect to the wonderful student athletes, but this reminds me of the hunger games, with excavators and shipping containers as obstacles to be navigated. Seems we can find a patch of actual ground for our young talent to develop on. When the United States comes in around the middle of the pack to the rest of the world, we can look back to the opportunities we gave our youth. Is a concrete coarse the best California can do? Has it really gotten that bad?

    @jensmith3719 10 місяців тому +4

    why is this a road run ??? if the weathers bad thats part of the challenge, just wear the right footwear, very odd to have x country on concrete

      Course is typically 3 MF hills anywhere from 18%-25% grade. CIF won't allow kids race down these hills that are wet, slippery, and muddy. The course is normally soft dirt, hard dirt, grass, gravel and asphalt. I don't remember the last time the "rain course" option was used; it's been years. The traditional course was raced the previous weekend at CIF-SS Prelims meet. (BTW: CIF H.S. rules do not allow spikes to be worn in XC).

    No puddles anywhere. I thought cross country was about braving the elements. Pretty sad excuse for a cross country course.
