207lb MARLIN CAUGHT FROM A KAYAK in New Zealand

- On 22 March 2021 I paddled out on my kayak to do something which I thought was almost impossible, but somehow after many hours on the water I became the third person in New Zealand to capture a marlin from a kayak, and the first person in New Zealand to land a marlin caught from a kayak and officially weigh and record the catch.
The striped marlin took just under 3 hours to reel in and it weighed 94.2kg.

My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!
Absolute LEGEND!!! Holy shit man when that thing first breached after you hooked up my heart was racing, I can't imagine how you felt in that moment! Incredible job staying calm, cool, and collected and thanks so much for sharing this amazing experience. Massive cheers and congrats on a catch of a lifetime, much love and respect from the Central Coast of California.
Thanks heaps man! I had so much adrenaline after hooking up - all I cared about was making sure I got the marlin in without anything going wrong. It was an amazing experience that I'll remember for my lifetime. Cheers from NZ 🤙🏽
@Jose Stickman that's exactly right about the drag reduction from the kayak being able to drift.
Kia ora "THANK YOU" for sharing your journey and landing this Marlin...!! What also impressed me was the way YOU were sooo professional and organised with your equipment and "fishing ethics" i.e. you knew where your equipment was on the Yak, cleared all the clutter, communicated on your radio - had your support boat right there...all while "catching" AND Landing this 94.2kg Marlin..Nga Mihi
kia ora - wow thank you so much, what a nice comment! It might have looked like I knew what I was doing, but a lot of it was just luck to be honest 😂 for example I didn't actually plan to have a support boat - Elwood very generously offered to help out when he heard I hooked the marlin on the radio - so grateful for that! Some times in life the stars align - this was definitely one of those occasions 🙏🏽 thank you!
I've got a sea-going twin Kayak that I'd like to set up for fishing. You've given me some inspiration.
Love to hear it!
hats off man. that was a well deserved fish. the battle was insane. amazing footage of the battle too. congratulations Greg
Thanks Corey!
Jealous much?
He never said it was a solo catch, although it 99 percent was. Buddy in the boat took it out once it was on the surface humanely and for safety sake. After roughly a 2.5 hr battle it was well deserved. Congrats
Well done mate, thanks for taking the effort to film it too. The stoke and enthusiasm was contagious 👍
Thanks Robert! Glad you enjoyed the video mate.
Ain’t it about time for round 2? Was driving listening to old Yak Fish Global podcast about this and the hapuka had to re watch the vids! lol simply amazing Cheers
Cheers mate!! Let's see what happens this summer ;)
I can't believe I'm just watching this. I've always wanted to visit and possibly even live in NZ since 2 years ago because how peaceful and safe the County is, but also because of its beautiful scenery. I'm just getting sick and tired of the busy work and city life, and just feeling overwhelmed by everything and everyone around me, and just suffocating. I picked up fishing as a hobby to connect with nature more and to destress.
But never did I think you could kayak out to the ocean, not even that far and catch a marlin of that size. And that marlin really took you for a ride and made your kayak look like. a motor boat! Amazing video friend!!!
Thanks a lot Frank. I know what you mean about fishing being a good way to destress. It's my weekly meditation and a chance to reset before work each week. Hope you are doing well and speak to others if you are feeling overwhelmed by life. No good in bottling it up - best to talk about it as many of us are going through similar feelings! If you ever get to NZ, let me know and I can help you out with fishing down here 😊 Greg
Well done mate, most intense and satisfying fishing footage from a kayak i've seen on the tube.
Thanks so much mate - that means a lot.
Amazing my friend you a great my friend support her from Puerto Princesa City Palawan Philippines 💖💖🥰 I love fishing
Thank you !!
I can't even imagine hooking into something like that from a kayak!! Congrats on an incredible catch!
Thank you Chris!
Kayak was flying at maybe 4-7 knots at the initial run …
Thank you for recording go pro
Who let this man into the chat 😂
Such a well trained go pro, nice work Greg
GREAT FIGHT WITH THIS LEGENDARY FISH.....!!! CONGRATS
Cheers!
Hell of a nice fish!! Thank you for sharing the adventure!!
Cheers!
BRO, I was so happy for you, I could tell just by the sound in your voice you had been waiting for this moment to happen for some time, cheers! The fact that you landed the thing is just unbelievable, you sir are the man!
Thanks so much man! I worked really hard for that fish, so it was super rewarding when I finally got my hands on the leader! Will never forget that day
Props to that guy on the boat for rolling up and helping you out at the end.
100%, wouldn't have been able to bring the fish back without him.
My guy invented a new type of transport. Marlin riding.
😂😂😂
Enhorabuena. Magnífico combate con final feliz.
Probably the capture of a lifetime, beast catch mate!!!from Buenos Aires Argentina!
Thanks!!
Fish of a life time Greg 💪 you did it brother 🙌 Massive congrats to you
Very impressive. I got a 250 stripped marlin 70 miles offshore in San Diego fishing on a 25' Grady. Took me almost 2 hours to get to the boat on a trolling rod-relentless, but he lived to swim another day., too green to gaff .
Well done! Good on you for releasing it also.
Aaaaaaaahhh geeeeeeeze Greg that was frigging amazing!!! Well done mate. Best kayak fishing video I have ever seen. Was so nervous seeing the big bend in the rod...I was going...please don't break, please don't break....so pumped for you. Just too good.
Thanks a lot Rob, that means a lot. Honestly, those Ugly Stik rods are indestructible! Had it wrapped around the side of the kayak and it didn't even snap. I don't usually high stick like that either, but had no option in order to lift the marlin up. Just so glad everything worked out.
This dudes arms and back must be made of titanium! If he ever gets you in a headlock, just pretend you're already passed out!!!!
Hahahaha 😂 I love this
Incredible catch, thanks for the recording and sharing with us this thrilling experience.
Thanks!!
Not fish of a lifetime bro!! Even crazier catches coming up! Legend!
Thanks Kenny :)
An absolute mad lad and badass
Chur!
I feel like a kid again watching this haha great catch man👏👏
Absolutely magic to see thank you.. love the Kiwi spirit of helping others out..👌😎💛
Thanks brother. Yeah couldn't have done it without Elwood, who was a complete stranger at the time.
Congratulations! It is awesome ! You are a Great Fishing man, Greeting from Chile 🇨🇱 in South America.
Howard and Greg!!! Too much alright!!!
HOW IS THIS NOT AMAZING, OMG
Absolutely wild bro. Watched the whole thing. You're a brave boy out that deep in yah wee yak.
Cracked up at "GOPRO, START RECORDING" 😂
hahah yeah bloody thing wouldn't get going 😂
I think you're going to need a bigger boat! Hahaha nevermind that's plenty boat! Cheers mate congrats on the memory of a lifetime... Gonna be tough to top this one!
Thanks mate! Agreed
Flippen epic bro!! Way to get it done!!
Shot bro 🤙🏽
Absolutely brilliant.. I fished for tarpon in a real sit-in Kayak my fish were up to 220 lb. Fights were 3 to 5 hours. Ps.. Leader on the reel don't mean shit. Nothing is captured till your hands are on it at the side of the boat,That wasn't a marlin tournament where you get 500 points for leadering a fish.. Beautiful fish , and pretty fine eating size.
Cheers!
It just blows my mind that fishing line is that strong. Unreal.
Me too! I'm surprised it didn't break
my arms got sore just watching that, epic video, well done!
Thank you! It took weeks to recover properly from this weekend
I have nothing to say other than awesome... really awesome... I'm envious... By kayak...
Wow what a catch. Glad you filmed and put that on UA-cam!
Just awesome mate! Great battle and we'll deserved victory! Great fish
Thanks Matt!
Fantastic job keeping the rod forward and not going perpendicular. I thought for sure such a large fish would roll a kayak if it dove down like that.
Thank you!! There were a couple of hairy moments, but somehow it all worked out
So cool man.
Congratulations!!! one wild ride.
If I caught that and after all the excitement I would of been exhausted. That's crazy you got that on a kayak. Nice job.
Thanks! I was certainly exhausted 🤣
Bro that was an epic watch. What a legend. Congrats man.
Thanks Richard! appreciate it
Absolutely amazing! Good on you mate!
Can’t believe it man, what a moment this would and still is! Congratulations bro!
Thanks mate!!

Jesus bro well done, isn't there heaps of sharks out there? You just got ya feet hanging in there I was worried for ya bro lol, mad catch
Thanks man! Yeah a few sharks around that area 😂 not too fussed about that though. Brought the feet in when the fish near the boat.
Had to have a rest after watching that…bravo 👍👍👏👏👏👏👍👍
Haha thanks mate!
Thats flippin epic.
Dam bro thats awesome! I felt your pain every time you had leader on and it did another run! Congratulations brother!
Yeah was so gutting every time! Chur brother
I'm tired just watching that mammoth effort ! Great persistence and courage to pull that off.
Thanks Andrew!

Salam dari Indonesia 🇲🇨
Awesome. Nice job bro. Good to see how happy you were when you hooked it.
Meant the world to me mate. Thanks!
I'd completely freak out being on such a tiny floaty thing with such a big fish pulling down my line.
Haha I was way too excited to be scared!!
At first I was like why are they killing the fish... But realised this is likely a Kayak world record fish its understandable for sure. Amazing catch mate!!!!
Thanks! I think larger marlin may have been caught from kayaks off South America. Not sure how many have actually been recorded though.
Legend!
I’m speechless! Its a mission to pull a marlin on a boat. On a kayak it’s not thought to be possible. Your a brave man. Legendary video mate watched with a huge smile.
Thanks very much Brett! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Does this type of fishing have a low survival
