Some of the most beautiful music ever made.

This is just one of the beautiful pieces of music from Castalia. David Torn plays guitar beautifully on Castalia as always. Great effects. Mark Isham is my favorite musician/artist of all time. Signiture trumpet that I can always recognize. I have Mark's autograph on his THE CONSPIRATOR 2 CD set. I started listening to Mark Isham back in 1986 when I first heard his song MEN BEFORE THE MIRROR on Windham Hill's Winter VHS and went out and bought Mark's VAPOR DRAWINGS album which was 3 years old in 1986. I was 19 years old then and I still love listening to Mark Isham's VAPOR DRAWINGS (1983) CD, Film Music (1985) CD The NEVER CRY WOLF, THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK and MRS. SOFFEL soundtracks on that CD are beautiful both CD's on Windham Hill. WE BEGIN 1987 MARK with ART LANDE. CASTALIA (1988) which is my favorite CD from Mark Isham. THE GRACIOUS CORE with Mark's brother JOHN ISHAM on bagpipes is my favorite piece of music from MARK ISHAM The MARK Isham (self-titled) 1990. Both on the Virgin record label. Tibet 1989 which is not only on CD but also on Windham Hill DVD in 5.1 surround. Mark's Blue Sun 1995 CD and of course this great CLOUD ABOUT MERCURY 1987 CD. Mark's many many great film scores CRASH soundtrack is my favorite. A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT soundtrack. TROUBLE IN MIND 1987 soundtrack. POINT BREAK 1991 soundtrack. Besides his many great film scores. THE STEADFAST TIN SOLDIER music with JEREMY IRONS narrating along with the other Windham Hill children's stories music CD's Mark did. THE EMPEROR AND THE NIGHTINGALE music is brilliant. The SONGS MY CHILDREN TAUGHT ME is a beautiful collection of the Windham Hill children stories music without the narration only the music that he made. I just can't say enough about Mark Isham. It all started with GROUP 87 with the great PATRICK O'HEARN that I love so much. Mark is awesome.

You are very welcome. Mark Isham's music is very under-rated. There's a beauty in Isham's music that sets it apart from the rest of the new age music, jazz and film score music. A beautiful magic to it. I guess that's why he was chosen for Once Upon A Time.series.

I remember purchasing this tape back in the late 80's and then playing it till it broke form being stretched. I wish Mark would go back to doing albums like this. He is a master of the soundscape.

Isham's music from the '80s is unclassifiable--better IMO than any other "new age/space" music, or any other on Wyndham Hill. For me, a lover of classical 1st & jazz 2nd, he comes closer to classical than to any other category I know. E.g., despite its comparative brevity, "Sympathy & Acknowledgement," as a piece of minimalist music--or as I prefer to call it, "music of continuous [rather than discrete] transformation"--is better than anything I've heard by Philip Glass (boring) or Steve Reich.
Still, "The Gracious Core" is my favorite piece by Isham. And I love it even more when it follows "On the Threshold of Liberty"; try that sequence as an experiment. To me, "Threshold" evokes the (idealistic, dedicated to a high purpose--those who were) Northern recruits marching to the front at the beginning of the Civil War. "Gracious Core" evokes those same recruits (those who survived) marching home at war's end: triumphant, yes, but not angry or vengeful, or proud in an arrogant way, just because they won; rather, nobly victorious in fulfilling their hope to free the slaves & save the Union, but also humble, & sorrowful & compassionate, for all the suffering they have seen & experienced. They have reckoned the cost. As a further experiment, insert between Isham's 2 tracks, if you can find it, track 1, "Barcarole," from the Pat Metheny Group album "Offramp." Maybe I'm strange, but this track evokes in me the chaos, horror, & terror of combat better than any other music I've heard. The total sequence, then, evokes for me the whole course of war at its best (never good), from the nobility of intentions (not mere jingoism or thoughtless patriotism) at the start, through the hell of combat, to a possible noble end.

From Group 87's SUBLIME FELINE to this MASTERPEICE! The Gracious Core is about anything that matters! A wedding, a Funeral, a Party-this is about as good as it gets! Basically, rubbing shoulders with BOLERO! Tough to say, but true. Just my thoughts, thank you! Greg

God how I wish people could hear this! Just a subtle warm and deep feeling for those who have passed regarding Covid-19. God Bless!

I still have the original cassette I bought so many years ago when this was first released. Mark is tending towards his jazz and soundtracks lately, but I sorely miss this period of his. His music is sometimes trancendent and fits no description I can think of.

I liked Vapour Drawings a lot, but this album encapsulates what Mark Isham is truly capable of ie combining discordant menacing musical elements with some serene heavenly soundscapes. What also helped is having a list of A1 musicians to back him up namely Messrs Torn, Karn and Bozzio. Definitely the most productive period of his musical output

In my opinion, "Castalia" represents the apex of Mark Isham compositional estro. The great musicians employed to record the album, give value to composite tracks.
Vapour Drawings, is definitely an album of great compositional value that I love very much.

@@giannidainotti9304 Vapor Drawings was the fantastic introduction to Isham's music for many art students. BTW: his 1990 album titled "Mark Isham" (released two years after the album "Castalia") won the Grammy Award for Best New Age Album at the 33rd Grammy Awards in 1991. I always loved listening to the track "I Never Will Know" with vocals by Tanita Tikaram.

This music evokes the spirit of Hermann Hesse's great novel. I hear this and feel a sense of loss for the high-minded retreat that hosted the Glass Bead Game. Alas, in our world a place like Castalia will always be (at best) a perfect idea that cannot survive against the power-mad machinations of egomaniacs, socially sanctioned stupidity and the lack of meaning in mindless consumerism.

      Thanks, Noe,
this your thought and comment, adds a further depth study to this wonderful, as inspired Isham’s piece. I think the atmosphere of this track goes very well with different interpretations. At every listening this music leads me to image a natural environment, in which its inhabitants are protagonists in the foggy forest ...

This song, THIS SONG pretty much defines an intense situation. Being it THE BRIDES WALK TO THE FRONT OF THE CHURCH, or being it a song showing someone's influence, persona and the THOUGHTS of THEM when it is played at their memorial or funeral.
About as deep and inspiring as it gets!
Please tell me if I am wrong.
    Thank you, GREG

Through this piece, everyone has his own, personal vision that describes images through this beautiful music. Listen this music, I see a green view. A foggy landscape suspended in a magic nowhere land… So, as I told, everybody lives his feelings…
