I really appreciate this video. My wife and i aren't podium gravel cyclists, but it is a large part of our lives. We trained so hard over the offseason and in June she had a wreck during a group ride. She broke her thumb and then two weeks later found out she had completely tore her UCL in the thumb. The ortho surgeon did a internal brace augmentation, which seems to be what you had done. She is still 3 weeks till the surgeon allows her to start riding outside again, but she is on the trainer. She just watched this video and kept saying she has had all the same emotions and feelings. This gave her confidence that she may be able to salvage something of the rest of our season. Thank you for sharing your story.
The transition of riding inside is also tough. For me, I had guilt as I didn’t really enjoy the trainer and was feeling pretty negative about that. There’s just so much to process. I wish you both good luck and sending healing vibes to your wife!!
@@PaigePoweredsame headspace. I was just diagnosed with Carpal Tunnel, Cubital Tunnel, and Guyon’s Canal Syndrome all in the same arm 😅. Meet with the surgeon on Monday to determine my fate. I hate the trainer but I will do my best with it.
Omg. How brave to video on your way to surgery. And the surgical and rehab part??! As an athlete and nurse I appreciated this. I too did a journal w my torn tendons recovery. Great video for any patient/athlete/healthcare worker to see!❤
WoW! Just amazing! You are such an inspiration. I was actually there in Emporia to see you start and rode my first Unbound 200 this year so I can imagine how much of an effort it took to almost win the whole thing just weeks after surgery .
i thought i could handle the graphic content but when he pointed out the tendon gliding easily i had to dip. i have had 9 surgeries in my life so far including a skull fracture (tbi), heart attack and knee replacement and i always think i can handle it. looking forward to seeing you race the rest of the season, sending positive thoughts.
Thanks Paige for an awesome video, that I’m sitting here watching 1 month out from rupturing my Achilles on a gravel ride. My orthopedic doesn't want to do surgery do to many factors. Hope my recovery goes half as well as yours. Congratulations and once again thank you for sharing.
Wow....what a great story of hardship, determination and triumph. So glad you included all the emotions and the human elements of dealing with such a devastating issue. "You have to be really confident with who you are outside of a bike racer". "It's ok to be sad, sit in that sadness, be ok with it, accept that whats going on in your life". Golden nuggets for the journal, thanks for sharing everything
I’m just now seeing this, I feel for you. I’ve shattered 9 totally over years of motocross. I love cycling for training by now gravel has taken me over. I wish you so well. Can’t wait to see you back at it as we ( this household) will be cheering for you. Go get it, cause you can and you will
Years ago I tore a tendon in my foot, gritted my teeth and self-treated (bad move). A year later I ended up with a huge ganglion cyst and a 15 staple surgery scar. Clearly your route wasn't easy but it was the smart way to go, a comeback with a podium finish shows that you have some serious will power, congratulations!
Once I learned that I already tore the tendon and retinaculum, I used a brace most of the time and walked cautiously while waiting for surgery. The tendon kept dislocating/subluxing even in the boot so not much more damage could be done at that point!
@@PaigePowered oh ok because I did something to my whole foot and doc gave me a brace but I kept biking nothing like you do but I can't seem to heal so I'm not going to bike or do much for a week and see but ugh so annoyed and painful at times. Praying I don't need some type of surgery.. already been through a botched hysterectomy and kidney bag .. sepsis..two surgeries. But I had mobilities at least. OMG your surgery looked brutal. That would have scared me off for good.

What an incredible fuckin story. Kudos to you.
How was she able to walk before surgery?
