  • With the decline of coal all across America, seeing a coal train racing along the tracks is slowly becoming a thing of the past. In the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area, we have ONE coal power plant left, and that is the Allen S. King power plant located in Bayport.
We'll follow a number of Bayport Coal trains as they work their way from Saint Paul, along the Altoona Sub, and towards the power plant in Bayport. Since this video was shot in all seasons, we can see what this line is like at all times of year. From manned helpers shoving hard on the rear, switch action at Bayport, The Robert Street Lift Bridge, and much more, this video has a bit of it all!

Great footage, thanks for sharing! Much of the second track that follows alongside through Bayport is also remains of the Milwaukee Road’s line that came from Hastings to access Bayport and Stillwater once upon a time.

cool vid... in my old UP timetable there's a curfew on coal trains at bayport... and a car limit to
"do not handle more than 55 cars over crossings at bayport or at nsp king plant. curfew on coal trains between hours 1500 and 1700 acct traffic at anderson window plant"

I seem to recall that they used to leave half of the train on the Wisconsin side.

I don’t know if anybody has a history of it, but I wonder if the Bayport power plant was also served by MilwaukeeRoads “peanut line“ that went between Prescott and Stillwater.

Sad to see coal going away. Average coal train weighs 17-18,000 tons.

Well coal trains going can be a good way because coal destroys the earth and environment much more, so basically this might a good act to save the air and stuff!
