- Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley goes off on a rant against certain city council members who are not voting the way he wants them to. The vote is a for real estate tax increase to fund Chicago's chronically underfunded CTA Mass Transit System (the El). But who cares what it's for - this is some good TV. Democracy at work with Da Mayor! Note the laughing in the background.
Richard Daley gets things done. As long as he keeps working to keep this city progressing, i don't care what he does. The point is he has kept Chicago on par with the best cities in the world and he's making sure it stays that way!

He actually didn't say that. The point he was making is that if the budget doesn't pass, there would be immediate cuts to public transportation across the city. For the alderman that held out (like Fioretti), public transportation is key. Daley admits that its easier to vote "no", but they were sent there to make the hard decisions. By the way, the budget passed.

If Daley wanted to make a broad policy point, he’d say “We’ll be over capacity and it will suck for everybody.” He would frame his rhetoric as having city-wide consequences. Instead, he chose to say “When the people are not picked up in YOUR ward, YOU’LL be calling Streets and San[itation] for the trucks” to hammer in the political peril facing alderpersons who vote “no.” Daley having the actual (not theoretical) power to influence how CTA cuts would be implemented, combined with this and other warnings of personal peril to those who oppose CTA funding, is an implicit threat. Is the speech persuasive and rhetorically strong? Yes. But don’t pretend it isn’t brandishing the clout-collateral that it is.

@@jontee4freemindless acceptance? The city needs to pass a budget. If they don’t, the city shuts down. Daley wants those who vote no to have the courage to face the consequences. They worked months on this budget and now alderman are suddenly saying “no”. So we are stingy on money, but give a blank check to police and fire?
Voting for the budget sucks because there is always something you don’t like there. It was negotiated. You don’t want to vote for it? Fine, but don’t hide from the consequences
@@Donillini of course, but are you sure you understand what this specific budget was about? This budget raised the prices of the public transit in order to pay for public transit (an unfair amount many agree), which means the poorest people in the city had to cover the cost. And Daley is very well known for bullying alderman. Yes, budgets are hard. And in those difficult decisions, sometimes they are wrong. And in the Daley era, Daley made sure the people around him were people who did not tell him he was wrong.

Agree with your comment about Brandon but Daley sold Chicago out. He made deals to HIS benefit and put this city in so much debt that you and i will not see it paid off in our life time.
@@smith7388 Of Course! at the end of the day Daley was just another crooked Democrat! However at least he kept most of the city & Downtown Safe by having a strong support for law enforcement! Now under Johnson, crime & theft is in every single neighborhood in Chicago!

I like Daley bc to my ears he does sound braver than most and he sounds frankly like what we used to expect men to sound like.
Litlle munchkin kept all of the citys revenue downtown for Navy Pier, The Bean, etc... While the neighborhoods didn't get much revenue for their districts in improving roads, and law inforcement. A mayor should never be allowed to completely control the city's budget. Like father like son.

Long ago, back in common sense days, Only the Tax Paying holders of Property with verifiable ID, could vote on how those Taxes were spent. This mayor is a perfect example of what occurs when the Vote is Bartered and Sold to whomever pays the Tribute. In Sadam Hussein's last election, he reportedly received a 100% Vote of Confidence. Idi Amin, Robert Mugabe, Kim Jung II...etc, etc.

It just amazes me how all of Dick Daley's friends are a. on trial or b. in jail and he seems untouchable. I hope the FBI is at least watching him like they watched ex governor Blago. Wow an outrage against daley!Keep in mind that Chicago was on the brink of collapse in the 1980's.Deindustrialization led to the loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs.Chicago could have easily gone the way of Detroit or Cincinnati or St. Louis.It didn't.Chicago invested in infrastructure & amenities to attract a highly skilled workforce and is now rated as an alpha city in the same category as New York, Paris, Frankfurt, and Tokyo.Daley's reign may be corrupt but you cannot say it has failed!!!

Mayor Daley is still better than most American Mayors. Chicago is a great city regardless of what Matt Drudge and Glenn say about it. Neither one of those those wimps could enjoy the city out of fear.
