- The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Suraya Mohamed | January 7, 2022
Enter into esperanza spalding's safe space for healing through music and song with a Tiny Desk (home) concert of selections from her Songwrights Apothecary Lab, (S.A.L.) project. A constant iteration of evolutionary ideas, her songwriting workshop is both a bold examination of human existence and resilience and a guided research collaboration with a collective of musicians and researchers in the practices of neuroscience, psychology and music therapy.
"All Formwelas (songs) from the S.A.L. are created through our research, divination, intuition, musicianship, taste, inspiration, and collaborative effort to design songs that enhance a specific salutary affect," spalding writes on her project site, along with brief descriptions for each of the three Formwelas performed here.
"Formwela 3":"a re-membering with the sun's vast and perpetual blessing as evidenced by one's own aliveness and capacity for creating within self and community an un-corruptible home-planet"
"Formwela 4": "the articulation of needs streaming oxygenation through your ancestral vessel/vein of infinite life"
"Formwela 8": "a sound at ease, with no urge to move from that comfort place"
spalding's performance here is outstanding, and her top notch band, Loving presences (aka singers) and the Magical dance presence (aka dancer) add a dimension of creativity that amplifies the music's message and nourishes the spirit. Green-screened walls explode to reveal a constellation of imagery that complements the flow of this seductive music. Be sure to watch until the end.

I remember back in 2011 when she was nominated for best new artist against Justin Bieber, and she won! I was in middle school and was completely obsessed with Justin Bieber (I know lol) so I was kinda devastated but that was the day I started to explore her music. Now she’s one of my favorite artists and I realize how well deserved the award was. She’s a true artist and her sound is unlike any other!
Justin bieber has never been an artist. Thanks for coming back to reason
Hah me too! What an upset! It was great!
I remember that too. I'm a bassist so I was shocked but very glad. She deserves the recognition.
@@maelleam7800 “never an artist” is a bit harsh. He may not be a jazz musician but he’s a great artist in his own right
@@b.maximebk yeah sure 🤢
The saxophone player matches the sound of the voices perfectly. His tone and vibrato are perfect.
Wayne's Words 😉
Oh yes
Easily one of the best Tiny Desk Concerts I've ever seen. Musical excellence at it's peak>
Esperanza Spaulding is in a class by herself. A class of music genius, talented, and exceptionally gifted
And beautiful....
Just feeling so much gratitude right now. Overwhelmed by the artistic courage and capability that went into making this experience possible. Thank you thank you thank you.
This is one of the most intentional artist there is. This was spiritual medicine. Thank you tenfold esperanza 🙌🏽
formwelas
This music heals me.
Wow, It's hard to match the experience going out to hear live music, being in the same room and experiencing the sounds from the source. But i felt like I was right there. Never heard this stuff with Her sooo good, MORE OF THIS!!!
While we are stuck inside... Creative joy & soul..... so artful and uplifting....
Esperanza is at the top of the list of world-class artists. I could never appreciate her enough for what she has and is contributing to the world.
Nothing could have prepared me for this and I’m glad I wasn’t prepared. Pure beauty. Thank you.
This performance cannot be described with words.
But it can be sure felt with the heart.
100%
exactly! there are no words to describe what they all did! *__*
This music connected all my emotions somehow, it feels so human, like blood running through my veins. What a precious way to heal people through music. Thanks Esperanza and everyone involved, lots of love!
An amazing description of how her music always made me feel 🙏🏽❤️
That was the shortest 21 minutes I have ever experienced! She took me on an absolute ride! Bravo and well done!
I LOVE this woman’s work!!! She explores music with a gracefulness that is unmatched and soooo inspiring. In this era of pandemic, I feel extremely blessed that I was able to enjoy her artistry in person when she performed at the Music Hall in Detroit.
Engulfed by Esperanza Spaulding's vocal and music genius, I was transported to the third jazz 🎺 heavenly hemisphere. Seranaded by the artistic technical photography and phenomenal background singers and instrumentalists was definitely a spiritual expedition.
It has been a couple of years (I am ashamed to say) since I last heard Esperanza but WOW!!! she has evolved. Amazingly deep and overwhelming, beautiful music full of hope. Thanks!
She has that “ Midas Touch”. Actually when I listen, she’s a “ thinking person “ artist.
Esperanza you make my heart smile 🎶❤️🩹🎶💋🎶❤️🩹
I feel your brain in every song.. 😌
You cause me to experience music differently than anyone else out here. 🌎
You cultivate the courage in me to speak my truth.. something so much easier said than done and what I will spend my entire life trying to respectively do.. 💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽
Thank you so much for this work, I feel the hours you put in.. 🎼📝🎻
Thank you for making me a better woman. You just made me better.
Wow. Vibes from Seattle 🌬💞🎶
Esperanza’s a one in a billion talent. I’m NOT kidding.
SO great she shares it, explores it, and develops it ALL!
🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Lump in my throat during this whole production. You really don't want to be interrupted during viewing. Relentlessly beautiful.
We have to change what it means to be home...thats just one of the jewels I got from this. The unbound artistry, the freedom of improvisation, the courage of creativity...im so inspired.
So, so .. SOOOOoo needed this right now. Bravo Tiny Desk, Flawless as Always, Esperanza.
Love her. I still listen to her album "Emily's Devolution" all the time
Rest In Pleasure takes me somewhere farrrrr awaaaaaay.... 🚀
What an absolute blessing this incredible artist has bestowed on her audience. Truly mesmerizing!!!
I remember seeing Esperanza at Reed college in 2016 in our home town of Portland, OR. She was glowing, brilliant, and in a class all her own. This is a beautiful showcasing of such talent. Brava!
I can't think of anyone, on any genre, as inspiring as Esperanza Spalding. A beacon for artists.
Amazing how she gets her male audience to actually focus on her art. Great reminder bro😎
So easy to understand why Wayne Shorter loved her. She’s moving jazz/music forward into uncharted waters. Bravo! ❤️
Thank you NPR for inviting my idol Esperanza Spalding on your tiny desk session. She has lovely voice and what an amazing talent she is. I don't know but I always remember many of the greats everytime I see Esperanza. I remember Ella Fitzgerald, Wayne Shorter, John Patitucci, Tony Bennet, Miles Davis, Bjork, Janis Joplin, Herbie Hancock, and Alicia Keys. Esperanza is like the output of their sounds unified into one. GBU Esperanza Spalding. I will always be your loyal fan!!
I hit the like before she hit the first note. She always deliver great performances, and this one stole me from where I though I was. Stunning!!
It took me years to really get into her works, I kinda followed her by far since I was younger and started trying out her music from time to time. I think that Songwrite Apothecary is, among the three last albums, the one I find more accessible whereas it touches on influences that I recognize and love such as Sun Ra and Hermeto. Long story short, I feel really glad to be alive at the point in time and space then her, this is simply too wholesome ❤❤❤
Very well said
Truly connecting to where you are, where you are coming from and where you are going. Massive inspiration. My love to Esperanza and all the crew. Cheers from Brazil 🙌🏼
This is insanely beautiful! Instantly bought to tears to my eyes! This woman's level of artistry is impeccable!!! She will always be my kindred spirit! So thankful I got to briefly meet her in person a few years ago 💓
This is one the most beautiful things I've ever witnessed.
Still loving her Apple blossom 11 years ago on npr, thanks for bringing her back on tinydesk

Her sound really takes me back. So far back that I could see them being featured on an episode of Sesame Street or Mr. Rogers. This was pretty dope 👌🏾
Ahh yes! I love that you mentioned Sesame Street
i'm gratefulto have heard formwela 8 live, that song just emits such power, light, stillness. Forces you to stop thinking and live in it, even if for a few seconds, this is beautiful
100000%
What a beautiful gift brought upon us through this media. Esperanza is beyond belief. The first song has my brains splatted on the roof as proof of the mind blown.
what a pleasure to listen to Esperanza Spalding on Tiny Desk😊
2010 I saw her live at Jazz in Mariac in the South of France, was a brillant concert
OH MY GOD!! never thought id see esperanza on tiny desk again...truly my ears and eyes have been blessed 💗💗💗
I can't wait to see her perform live & in person (for the 1st time) tomorrow night!! I missed my chance last time she played in my area. Fool me once... ;-)
Oh, I am only a minute in and I can tell this is really special. The technical and spacial limitations becoming part of the art? Yes.
Yes, Lawd !
What a blast of brilliant musicianship put together in one "small tiny event"... Hay mucha Esperanza, es lo último que se pierde !!! Fantásticos músicos todos ellos y ellas...
One of the most brilliant minds we have in modern music today🔥🙏🏾
Oh this is treat on a Friday evening. I remember her stunning performance at Seoul Jazz Fest in 2016. Ah the good ole pre-pandemic days... Am hoping to attend more festivals and concerts in 2022. Fingers crossed.
Till then, thank you, Tiny Desk!
apenas comenzó ya le había dado like, todo lo que haga esperanza debe ser precioso de principio a fin
Perfect ambiance to chill with my magasine. A beautiful discover. Love it ! She and her band set a mood that I can’t describe ! So voluptuous ! Thanks for this amazing prestation !
Our very own Vuyo Sotashe on vocals 🙌🏾🙌🏾South Africa. Beautiful work by Esperanza ♥️ The pianist 😫😫🙌🏾🙌🏾
Yes, yes, gratitude and YES.
The unadulterated talent in this performance is incredible.
Oh my... loving her work! I have never known her so thanks, Tiny Desk, for introducing her to me and, of course, thank you, esperanza and the team, for the awesome performance!
She doesn't age!!!! I gave her first CD to a fellow-percussionist for his bday, back in the day.
Everybody thought that it was like some teeny-bopper stuff (based on the cover!)
🤣
Esperanza, the genius (literally & musically).
NPR reading my mind. It was yesterday that I watched her 2010 NPR Tiny Desk performance. That's crazy, I'm so happy for the new video!!! She is art
As always, listening to Esperanza is a journey for my senses! 🧡
Esperanza is, as always, a spark of light in the dim times we inhabit ✨
I needed this message. Thanks Esperanza and NPR.
I was so happy when I found this. I searched her up just to listen to i know you know. I was listening to al Jarreau's version of Take five and put me in the mood to listen to her!!!!!
Omg thank you so much tiny desk!! Esperanza???! Like seriously thanks! this automatically made my day better!
Esperanza is unreal. Talent and passion from another world.
Jallalla! TRE MEN DA Esperanza te amamos, gracias por tu music always
This is exactly what I needed on this snowy, winter day in NYC. Esperanza is a Goddess.
Ya'll have snow? Must be nice. All we have gotten in the Midwest so far is high winds and rain.
@@ladylovesherlord You wanna switch? Traveling in this is awful 😂
Early birds get the worm, we get the good stuff.🎶💞 Thanks npr.💯🎉Happy New year!
It's always a great performance with her! She's super talented and intelligent!
Great voice control by Esperanza Spalding. She reminds me of an old soul we've all seen before but forget their name.
The green screen effect makes it easier to flow outside reality to the plane of artistry she has created along with these lovely individuals working towards a common beauty.
Their is no escape from reality
@@myrichiehaynes Your is no escape from reality
@@myrichiehaynes *There. And no there is multiple ways to escape reality, even a final one
I think it's awful!
Dios Esperanza Spalding tenía tiempo que no te escuchaba, que locura lo que estás haciendo,
This was like a fever dream with a cool towel and a nice drink . Ty for this 🙏
Falling in love all over again ♥️😌I remember seeing you in concert in Charlotte, NC years back and still to this day one of my fave shows to date ♥️🙌🏾😩

One of my favorite artists! Her talent is superb.
19:08 the drummer goes "wooo!", Esperanza responds "WOOOOOO!!!!!"

closing the NPR walls on beat at the end of Formwela 8…and blew them open for the reprise of Formwela 3. That’s the attention to detail of a consummate once in a life live artist like Esperanza. I’m so in love with this project. 💛😌☀️🐈⬛
This is so cool! The background visuals and a huge team of everyone creating together 🥰☀️♥️ I love when your dancer shows up 😊 There is so much spirit 🙌 and talent, thank you for this 🎶💜
Perfection..the entire presentation.
The visuals are soo trippy yet electrifying 🔥 not something you see on NPR everyday. Amazing performance nonetheless
Starting 2022 off right! We all needed this comeback after so many years❤️
Extremely talented and creative young lady. ….. and band. It’s delightful & refreshing seeing young people producing this level/caliber of music. I hope it inspires a long awaited and overdue trend of making real music over cheap dummied down entertainment.
🌹🌟🌹🌟🌹
Overflowing with ungodly amounts of raw talent and ambition, Esperanza has embraced Einstein’s greatest quote;
“Imagination is more important than knowledge”
Thank you Esperanza for your music 🎶 I'm a big fan
😧🤯 my baby she bbn looks and sounds amazing love herrrrrr. Seen her live 2 times shes the best.
this is history being made!!!!
Didn't know how much I needed to hear this in this exact moment.
My introduction to her is when she did the prince tribute on bet singing “if I was your girlfriend” she did amazing that is a must watch if you never seen it. Trust me it’s a treat
Ah, thank you Tiny Desk. I hadn't been introduced to her music and this was fascinating. I love the Sufjan Stevens vibes in the middle of the show. Such artistic expression in the music, with complex chords and dissonance and minor keys and... Wow. Musical artistic brilliance.
This is the most beautiful thing I’ve heard in a long time. I’ve been a fan since 2007 and she never ceases to amaze me.
