I still love this game after all these years. One of my favorites on the system and one of my favorites of all time.

Superman for the Atari 2600 was one of my games I played a lot as a child the challenge was always trying to finish it faster than your previous time. It may not have a lot of replay value today but when I played this as a young kid it had a lot of replay value. Because you were Superman and he was my favorite super hero growing up as a kid. Sadly my Atari 2600 and my games are no more but seeing this video does make me feel like a little kid again.

I really loved this as a kid... had no idea what I was doing really, but SUPERMAN!

Only Atari 2600 game that I could remember that had a rough version of a cut scene at the beginning when Lex blows up the bridge and flees with his henchmen. Great game for its time (1979). Very ambitious and only one of two comic book superhero-related games (the other being Spider-man that was also very good).

Right! I didn't think of it as a cut scene, but it is!

Superman is one of my favorite games and one of the best on the 2600 platform. I think you've really underrated it, for me it is one of my top 10 games on the system, maybe even top 5. It is really fun to speedrun. I wrote a blog post a few years explaining the subtle genius of the design of the world map: csanyk.com/2014/02/topology-metropolis-superman-atari-2600/

I've finished the standard game in 47 seconds. All of the bridge pieces were in places that made it easy to quickly reconstruct them and the criminals were in close proximity to the jail. I got incredibly lucky in every aspect but I've never heard of anyone beating that time. You have to commit the admittedly bizarre map to memory and understand every shortcut.

I'm finding that I enjoy this game more and more, the better I become familiar with it. Memorizing the map is key because it helps you make snap decisions as you frantically pursue Lex Luther and his gang. Much like Adventure, there is a lot of strategy that emerges from the incredible game design (which figures since it is based off of the Adventure game engine). This, for me, is proving to be one of the most ingenious games ever made. You gotta play this one with a joystick though. You'll blow your thumb out on the Genesis gamepad within minutes with this game.

First multi-screen game I remember playing. Adventure 2600 may be more sophisticated, but Superman will always be #1 in my heart, lol.

My best friend had this game and we could never really understand it. I think he had lost the manual or we were too young to read it. Thank you for the video and explaining the game after so many years!

Better than certain other Superman-themed console games that I shan't mention here.

A really great game for the 2600. A little tricky to play- the instruction manual helped- but a fun and challenging game. Great review!

    Blue Atari Logbook challenge:
You've Impressed Lois Lane: 7 minutes or less,
Honorary Hero: 5 minutes or less,
    SUPERMAN: 3 minutes or less.
You can attempt this on both B difficulty, left A difficulty, right A difficulty, and both A difficulty switchds. You better not get hit by Kryptonite for the ones where Lois doesn't show up! I got the Logbook in 1982, but I think my Atari was broken so I couldn't play Superman until January 1983. Whereupon I beat B in 1'47". I've since beaten that time 1'18".
There's also a way to play with the bridge still intact, which I call a "cheat" that might take 20-30 seconds off your time. In the normal game the bridge pieces are in the same places. If they were randomized that could have been a modest game variation.

Whenever I was home sick from school I would play this game on my Atari.....I wrote a whole script for a CARTOON based on the game.. The end teased Brainiac. Later when I got tired of playing the same scenario...I used my imagination to make up NEW scenarios and wrote those down as episodes of the cartoon.. I still have my old stories....

This was one of my fav gamea as a kid too but i think it was more that i was a HUGE Superman fan than the game itself. Lol But once you get past all the screen jumps and the sounds this is a fun challenging game.

IMHO this was actually a groundbreaking game at the time it was released. I would have put this a lot higher on the list.

I just found my old Superman Atari Cartridge, it's amazing to look at how far games have come. Compare this to God of War 2018. lol

It’s weird how Atari never got into making more games based on super hero’s. No Batman, Hulk etc

I'd have put it higher--but that is childhood memories and not a current playthrough. I may have to give it a go.

OK The Daily Planet either has an "S" over the entrance... or.. or... it's got a globe with the western hemisphere on it...

A note to speed runners: I noticed that the time clock starts late from the first time of power-up. Every subsequent run using the reset switch starts the clock immediately.

Nice to see another review of this on UA-cam that wasn't created just to crap on it! I think you'll enjoy my recent look at it as well, which focuses more on its revolutionary aspects than it does just reviewing the game.

This is one of those games that seem like a hot mess when you first try it... but after a while you kind of start to get it.

Oh man, that game brings back memories. One of the first games we got for the 2600...one of my sisters won a 2600 and $300 worth of games from a McDonald's contest around 1982. Eventually she got bored with it and sold it to my mom, who gave it to us. However, by the time my sister sold it the boxes and manuals were all gone (she had kids).
So here I am, trying to play Superman with no idea of what the goals were. Which meant that I spent the whole time playing it, just flying around, getting hit by that beeping thing (no idea it was Kryptonite) and kissing Lois Lane so I could continue flying :) At least nowadays I find out there were actual things I could have been doing!

I thought Spiderman was a better superhero game for the 2600 simply because it was more straightforward... But I must admit this game was pretty ambitious for the time

Nice to see a more positive review of the game, true it hasn't aged all that well but for the time it was a good game and it's still playable if you know what you're doing.
Do you by any chance know how the game did sales wise back then?

"Kind of looks like a S." I guess it does, but it also kind of looks like a planet.
I used to play this game as a kid. It wasn't bad.

when this game was out i had an Intellivision and i remember laughing at these graphics when i saw this game in a video store..ya know graphics were bad when they were bad even in 1981 lol

Compared to the games that came before it, this was a really good Atari cart with seeming multi-colored sprites. Intellivision games were usually prettier and sports games played better with more than one button. But because they didn't get Space Invaders and later Pac-Man, it was sadly DOA (Dead on Arrival) in 1980.

This game looks pretty stupid at first glance, but it is actually quite awesome. It's definitely in the conversation with Adventure in the sense that you really start to pick up on the nuances the more you play. It is truly a case study in pattern recognition and memory recall. If you just keep flying/walking to the right or left, it'll take you forever to accomplish anything. You have to learn the shortcuts and how to get from one "neighborhood" to the next. I just wish the developer had been able to make an option where the bad guys fire their Tommy guns at you! Would have been pretty cool if the game played a few notes of "Can You Read My Mind" every time you pick Lois up to fly to the Daily Planet. Damn you Atari and your 4k ROM chips!!!
