My father explored Indonesia in 1900

- A short biography of my father (1875-1950) His father was a minister who went with his family to Indonesia, leaving his three sons and daughter behind in Holland for a decent education. My father traveled alone to Indonesia in 1891 and became assistent tea planter. He took an interest in geology and started exploring the riches of Indonesia. He obtained concessions for oil, diamond, manganese and other mineral fields. When he returned to the Netherlands in 1926 he met my mother. On account of my birth he postponed returning to his concessions until he lost all of his money in the Wall Street crash and could not afford to return. We were raised in Holland at hand-outs of the family. He always dreamt of the most beautiful country on earth, populated by the kindest people, as he termed it: Indonesia!
Correction: He lived in Bogor, not Weltevreden as mentioned in the subtitle. Also in Bandjermasin Cibadak and Sukabumi. See more of my fathers explorations there here:

Incredible story Michael, but so parallel. My father was born in Sukabumi, Indonesia in 1933, of full dutch extraction. My great- grandfather was born in Tegal. but my grandfather I think was born in Den Hague, and eventually was employed as a tea planter, moved with his newly married dutch wife to Indonesia, and loved photography, so I grew up seeing images of Indonesia in the 20s and 30s. They also lived for a while in Bogor. He owned a studibaker hawk, and he learnt to speak sundanese. He smoked like a train and died somewhere near Bogor in 1943 from tuberculosis. I have seen his grave. The japanese stole everything from them, so my father only knew the first 12 years of his life there, being repatriated back to europe. My uncle ended up 4 years in a camp under the japanese from the age of 16. My grandmother stayed till the war ended, but had to wear a read japanese armband, which I now possess. It is curious that my brother, half dutch would graduate in geology. It would not surprise me that my grandparents knew your father. My father died 3 years ago, but also never stopped yearning for his beloved Indonesia.
Indeed many parallels - be it that my father lived forty years before yours. Thanks for your comments.

Dutch colonialism is the worst thing that has ever happened to us (Indonesian). But we must not forget, it has also united us. There will be no such thing as "Indonesia" if the Netherlands never step their foot on Malay archipelago. Unfortunately, the current generation does not value the struggle of our forefather and willing to sold their own people and country to fulfill their greedy and selfish desires.

Nice story. Thanks for uploading this video. Greetings from Indonesia!
The country people leave behind (in their memories) often differs very much from the country it develops into. So sometimes it's better NOT to return. I remember my father and his brother (former KNIL) never felt the urge to return to Indonesia, even though they were born there. But their children visited Indonesia several times. A lot of sad stories can be told before, during and after WW2, but time goes on, memories fade and every generation builds up its own memories.

All of place that you mentioned above is part of Indonesia.
It is Buitenzorg for the old name of Bogor, not Weltervreden. Back then, Weltervreden is the main living areas for the Europeans on the outskirts of Old Batavia. I feel like there have been so many hate comments that were written by Indonesians towards this man (your father). I apologize on behalf of these people. I am an Indonesian too and although I do not pursue History, I know enough to tell everyone that the Netherlands did oppress us for more than a century and that we do have the right to be upset over this but what we forgot is that they also helped us regain power and declare our independence. The conservative bureaucrats of its land are the ones that we're suppose to blame (and despise) for the sufferings that our beloved land had endured because as far as I've learned during class, the liberals of Netherlands aided us. They agreed to the open door politics and actually encouraged us to obtain better rights under the reign of their country (under the reign of their government).
They did invade Indonesia and its people but they've also made their amends. You could choose to stick with the past if you want but I rather stick within this present time where they've gotten their forgiveness from us and where we've finally achieved our peace and freedom from the few of their people.
On the other hand, we didn't even know who this man was working for. He was an explorer but does that make him another one of those corrupt government members? No. He was simply a worker for an expedition. We didn't know what he did and how he was with the locals back then but it's better to not include him or assume that he was one of those people who treated the natives badly. So, stop saying things that might not even be true!
Yep. I feel that these guys were still being an ignorant. Rather than seeing the future, they kept on scolding the past. That's the reason why most of our people's mentality are going backward.
Plus our country is gradually filled by these people with their "Political Bullshittery".
@Rain For god's sake. Fuck no to second new orde.. I mean, i'm not aligned with each side of the candidate, but i feel like picking the first choice would've been better by looking from the condition of our country nowadays. These people must be controlled to work harder, and educated with a new and more effective methods. Not tamed with those subsidy to make'em much more lazy and blame the government for their stupid habit. We won't move forward if our people still had those lazy mentality beneath them, even facing the challenges of the future. i.e. 4th Industrial Revolution.

bahasa inggrisnya bagus tuh harusnya banyak baca literatur atau artikel dr berbagai sumber
emang lintah darat, debt kolektor, dan sejenisnya bukan pekerja? mereka juga pekerja tapi tetep aja dicap jelek
begitu juga belanda yg di indonesia di jaman itu, mereka bukan cuma warga belanda, tp mereka pekerja VOC dan you really should read about them, how rich and bad they are everywhere
Iya, kita pernah dipaksa membangun jalanan. Iya, kita pernah dipaksa membakar dan membuang bahan pangan kita sendiri. Iya, kita pernah ditembaki karena memberontak. Namun perhatikan saya dulu, ketika saya bilang mereka membantu mencapai kemerdekaan negara kita, mereka memang membantu.
Late March this year, I met a man from Amsterdam in Tidore. We started an interesting yet warmful chat after I call her Meester instead of Sir. He was surprised, but I told him that I knew him come from The Netherlands from the inn's owner. That's why I call him Meester rather than Sir like I call any other European tourists I have met.
Then he told me that he was born in West Java. His father even lived in the Dutch East Indies almost all of his age, working for a company and had lived in several places alongside the colony, mostly in Papua. Somehow he and his father survived the WW II, continued living in Indonesia after the declaration of independence (1945) and the transfer of sovereignity (1949). But, they can't survive from the hot political tension during Papua dispute, and decided to repatriate to Holland.
To me, he said Indonesia is his second homeland and visit the country regularly. To me, they are Indonesian in their heart and soul, even though they are Dutch by nationality.
Next time, call him and any tourist by name. Do not mentally bow. Thats not the part of hospitality, thats mindset. Be kind, but be proud.
@@bendakapoetra chill boy.. calling them 'meester' or 'sir' has nothing to do with slave mentality (or whatever you call it). It's our interpretation of Indonesian honorifics culture to stranger/older person. Mister or Sir is a rough translation for 'pak/bapak/mas/abang/kang etc'.
Next time, learn more things about manners. How to treat people nicely. Also learn more about your own culture. Be kind, smart, but respectful.

I don't really care about the history but the thing is,some of you maybe, just maybe, didn't born at the time showed in this video. The one who has to go to experience the oppression of your country is not you but the older generation.
Think about this:If it wasn't for the invasion, there will be no history to put in your textbook to make it more interesting. Indonesia may not even going to have what we have today. History told us to always remind our mistake and not doing it again.
Maybe the society won't be as civilised as today. Last but not least, we have to forget the past and move foward.
If we always want to blame others, how can we thinking forward and advance to a better society?

It must have been terrible for your father not to be able to get back to Indo. Why he actually ever returned to Holland? My wife is Indonesian, i love this country so much and would die for a chance to see it hundred years ago. Deforestation of pristine rainforest which is happening now in Kalimantan and Aceh province at a rate of 300 football fields per hour (!!!) in the name of palm oil, is definite catastrophy. What a wonderful story of your father Michael. Thank you. You had 2 other brothers and a sister. Good video. 🌴🌍☀
thank for sharing of old memory of your father. we enjoy also days when your father was in Indonesia 👍👍👌👌💐💐
sebenarnya belanda itu ga menjajah indonesia, indonesia aja yg terlalu lebay bilang itu menjajah... mereka cuma ke indonesia untuk memanfaatkan sumber alam semaksimal mungkin utk kepentingan manusia karena pribumi indonesia masih belum bisa memanfaatkan itu dgn baik.. sama aja kayak nenek moyang kalian dari dulu menjajah timur leste tapi kalian ga merasa menjajah kan? sekarang timur leste udah merdeka dari indonesia hahaha
Mana sumber nya donk :), kamu bukan org indo jadi diem aja kontol ;)
kerja paksa itu bukan termaksud penjajahan ya :)
Sama kayak papua.. dan mungkin bentar lagi.
