I spent a good ten minutes trying not to get my hopes up that one of those beautiful red skeins was mine, so imagine my glee when I finally opened the bag at the reveal shot and saw pink! I think I have the 0.5% DOS of straight Cherry Bomb. It has some fun resist points near the ties, precise specks of white at one tie and mottled splotches by the others. Love it!
Thank you, Rebecca! This was a ton of work but so worth it. This is a video I will save and reference in future dyeing sessions. I would like to see you combine a color with its complement to see those variations. Thanks again.
Oh my, look at those colors! I think I have the 0.0625% green, 0.5% black... It looks black at first glance, but then you can see some of the green under tones.
I was super impressed to see how the darkest colors still looked like the primary one - I thought I would look across a row and see just black/gray on some of them.
This bonus vid was EPIC omg. how cool showing the range of colors. very very cool. I am always looking for the perfect rust color and the orange and black gave a great range
It was SO FUN to see how things shifted. I'm really happy to know that if I want mossy "dirty" greens I should go with yellow and black. Or for browns orange and black is a good starting place.
Jacquard Burnt Orange (which is the same exact dye as Dharma Saffron Spice, so either one) mixed with Jacquard Royal Blue makes gorgeous rusts and browns.
The orange and black made some nice browns but have you done a video mixing the different rainbow colors with their complements - i.e. red with green, yellow with purple and blue with orange ( my favorite is cerulean blue with orange to get beautiful coppery browns (at least that is what comes out with fiber reactive dyes, haven't tried the acid dyes yet.
I'm catching up on some videos I missed before Christmas. Oh boy, you have outdone yourself o this one. Congratulations. It's a spectacular effort and I'm not surprised you ended up with a sore wrist. Every dyer I know would like to do this, but finding the time is so hard. Your warning to look after ourselves is also great to hear. A great hand dyer here in Australia has had to stop dyeing early this year, because of lung issues. Very sad.
I love this video! It is a great video to show how color works. I agree the teal and pink options would be interesting. I would love to see you do this with a red vs blue combination. Similar to the yellow vs blue combination video you did. The first row should be the different dos levels of a single color.
I absolutely love these methodical dying videos! Now I would like to see you experiment with complementary colors- red and green, purple and yellow, blue and orange! It's fun to see just how complementary colors change each other!
This great video gives me a good framework to start making my own dye encyclopedia from my full set of Dharma Lanaset dyes. I bought the Deb Menz book of dyeing for spinning years ago, but could never get up the initiative to dive into dyeing up a bunch of samples. I love the framework you used and could see this as a way of breaking it down into manageable units. The thought of having my own color factory is quite motivating 😃.
I refer to screenshots from this and other videos often as a reference and starting point. You could also make color cards or something to help keep track.
I love the Extreme Blue video so much and this took that whole concept to an incredible place. I can't decide if I want to use this knowledge to dye up a blanket or some sort of fade for a jumper. Or both
there is something incredibly zen about watching you do these gradients. i greatly respect the attention to detail (and patience) that is required for such a thing... and you did it multiple times!!! sheer madness! have you tried steam setting inside the plastic containers? i did it once using a steam basket inside my dyepot so the plastic was not in direct contact with the pot. a bamboo mat or something similar might work in your flat dye pans.
This is something I probably could do, but I don't think I could fit more than 3 of these containers in my steamer basket at once. I don't THINK they'd melt (since you can technically microwave in them) but Space constraints have been a concern.
I could definitely pick out my skein. That was an intense dying time you had this summer. I was hoping for a purple but got a red instead. It still looks great and will be used. Thank you.
Thank you, Marilyn! I'll be honest - I worried a bit that people wouldn't like the colors from the mixture but I hope the video makes it extra worth it. I'm so glad that it is useful to you!
@@ChemKnitsTutorials I am actually doing a very colourful lightweight hat from a free pattern on your website. I did have to increase the number of stitches to match the gauge but It is looking beautiful so far.
This video wad AMAZING! I loved to mix my own colors and I have not added black to colors, yet. I usually use primary colors that are consistent across manufacturers. I think Dharma's acid dyes could be sun yellow, golden yellow, turquoise, magenta or fuchsia, a greenish blue (cobalt or cerulean), maybe a warm red. Add a brown and true black. I am more familiar with pro chem wash fast acid dyes. I love the colors and I think I will attempt orange and black. How did you come up with the dilution progression? The only other dyer I know (besides me) is Carol Soderlund at Pro Chem. I really want to take her workshop.
I made it up for the Blue video from SMSMS and I talk more about it there, too. ua-cam.com/video/T6TKLta1cUo/v-deo.html I knew for the blue I wanted to do serial dilutions starting at a 1% DOS, but then for the black I wanted to be light enough so I could see the blue through all of the colors but still show a nice range. I likely looked back at the math of yarn dyeing to help make that decision, too. I'm sooo happy this range worked so well for all of the colors!
Thank you! I'm so glad it was helpful! I'll try to leave the link in a separate comment (sometimes YT doesn't like links in comments.) I'll also add it to the video description if it isn't there already.

Hello Rebecca ! English is not my language so I didnt understand everything . I dont understand how to do 25 diffèrent concentration of dye ? Very beautiful résultats!!!
Hi Marie - I added different amounts of dye to each of the cups. Starting with a 1% stock solution (1 g dye / 100 mL liquid) To each column: 20 mL, 10 mL, 5 mL, 2.5 mL, 1.25 mL of royal purple (1% - 0.0625% DOS) To each row 0 mL, 1.25, 2.5 mL, 5 mL, 10 mL of true black (0.0625% - 0.5% DOS)

Would you ever use the “double boiler” method and set the containers with the red dye and yarn intact in a steam bath, to help draw in the remaining Cherry Bomb dye?
It’s there a red acid dye that you prefer? I’ve had issues with the few I’ve tried, so I’m trying to find one that doesn’t get gloopy and/or bleed a ton.
I normally like cherry bomb but I think now it was for dry powder stuff and not stock solutions. I like Jacquard Fire Red, that one behaves pretty well I think. I need to do a red red red video sometime.
Thank you, Ellen. I don't ever try to duplicate someone else's colorways because I try to always make them my own. (it is a huge complement when someone compares a yarn I dyed to one of Malabrigo's!) Occasionally things may end up similar because of chance but I do try to always put my spin on things.

great video. Just a note that Dharma has starter dyeing kits that has all the primary colors and black in 2oz jars with some citric acid.
They sure do! I think dharma also has a jacquard starter kit, and i don't know about prochem or some other brands.
