    • @annadelfranco7320
      @annadelfranco7320 3 роки тому +2

      I can add that there are rules listed, before each example 😊. In Italian, to show possession we use the preposition DI, and this a rule; to indicate movement towards a place the preposition A is needed, and so on. Using prepositions differently would be incorrect. Maybe reading the PDF will help clarify.

    how do you know when to use sulla, sul, same with Di, delle, dalla,

    • @MyItalianCircle
      @MyItalianCircle  Місяць тому

      Hi Heather, you use the same rules that apply to articles: is the noun feminine singular? Then say sulla: sulla sedia. If it's feminine plural, it's sulle: sulle scale. Masculine nouns are trickier: sul / sullo for singular nouns, sui / sugli for plural nouns. Have a look at my lesson on definite articles: ua-cam.com/video/hKu7RT9g_gs/v-deo.html

    Thanks ma’am one question please can AL be use when it’s FEMALE WORD?

    • @MyItalianCircle
      @MyItalianCircle  2 роки тому +1

      Ciao! AL is A + IL, and IL is a masculine article, so we can only use it with a masculine word; for example: al mercato. With a feminine word we should use ALLA: alla mattina, alla scuola, etc.
      If the word that follows begins with a vowel, then we use ALL' with both masculine and feminine words: all'inizio (masc.), all'accademia (fem.).

    Hey!:) I’m very confused as to when to use di and d’. Somewhere it said to use d’ when di is followed by a vowel. However, I’ve noticed that this is true in only some cases, and I cannot figure out what the rules are. For example, I’ve seen sentences/combinations like “Il libro di inglese”, “qualcuno manca di esperienza” BUT then also “Lago d’Iseo”, “d’inverno”, “La borsa d’Agata” and "olio d'oliva". Hoping you can help!:)

    • @MyItalianCircle
      @MyItalianCircle  2 роки тому +3

      Hi Dakota, this is a very good question! Actually there is not a clear-cut rule, it's a matter of sound and personal preference. There are set expressions where we always use d', like d'amore e d'accordo, d'epoca, d'estate, and others, but otherwise the change from di to d' is not mandatory, and may even sound a bit old-fashioned in some cases. I suggest you stick to di unless you are using one of those set phrases.

      @@MyItalianCircle I am most grateful for your kind reply, thank you. As an example of where my confusion lies, at 3:25 whilst explaining the preposition 'di,' your third sentence doesn't contain 'Di' , why is this? I'm only trying to understand enough Italian to get by as a visitor. My family are taking me to Naples in September for my 75th birthday, I've always wanted to see the marvelous marble statues in the chapel in San Servero. So time isn't on my side. The sentence you are referring to is: la maniglia della porta. Della is a prepositional contraction: di + la : della. All this information can be a lot to take in, so you could try to learn them gradually. Next time you read a short text or sentence in Italian, you could underline the prepositions to understand how they are used. 🌺
