    My friend Tash and I sit down to watch the latest episode of PUSH that aired on Sunday, February 4th, 2024 and react to the hard moments we shared. We let you in on what was going on for us behind the scenes during the episode and shed some light on the challenging feelings we experience as wheelchair users.

    I don’t think we could ever share too many hugs. Hand shakes are better than a blown kiss from a hand, but a hug, done right is a warm embrace. The human connection gives us a safe feeling as well as an inclusion into another’s experience.
    Thank you both for being great roll models for your children and community. Best wishes to you and families from Alaska

    I absolutely love watching Push and hope you get a season 3. This show is so honest without indulging the “pity” tropes. I found myself relating to everyone and their challenges which helped me feel not so alone. I have CP, and I have lived a very independent full life but now my body has become far more challenging and limited as I age and I find this period of my life very difficult to navigate. I’m so impressed by the cast of Push, and because I live in Edmonton, I hope to meet you all someday. Thank you for sharing your lives with us!

    It is really great when share your thoughts (as you always do) about the hard stuff. in public, I always want to be considerate and helpful if you need, but I also do not want to unintentionally marginalize you as a person (and sometimes we just dont know how). Hearing your likes/dislikes/fears/peeves etc. is pretty insightful. your videos are super informative. plz keep sharing your thoughts and experiences!

    This was a great video!! It was really interesting to hear your reactions to being at that event. I can totally relate to what Natasha said about the hugging. Being in a powerchair as well, I have to always be aware of people who are coming in for a hug (which I do enjoy for the most part) or it could turn out very painful for them if they bump my joystick. These powerchairs are generally over 300lbs so a common gesture of affection could go very wrong very easily for an able bodied person who is unaware of how powerchairs work. Glad you ladies did end up going so Natasha could get that fear/nervousness finally behind her. It's a good feeling to get that stuff out of the way. I do overthink how genuine people are being as well though.

    Has been interesting, i think we all think/feel like that/the same at some point; as we age, as parts of us break, bad repairs.. no repairs.. big loses and small victories and keep going. Someone once said "the human life it's a very resilient virus", and i agree with that.

    Also, There is a fundamental aspect when you have a disability. Not having a disability means dealing with life is totally different when it comes to feelings, processing... consider this to be normal... with a disability is totally different, we have the functionality in our DNA of the able body but our feelings and processing incorporates being disabled and whilst this is normal for us, its totally different because we lack the ability that our DNA keeps telling us about..., we're always missing something and that means a life of continual grief because everything is different than our default abilities as an able bodied person... hope that makes sense

    I liked the honesty with which the two spoke. Push is not broadcast in Argentina but I would have been interested in having seen it. I don't know why a long time ago I was curious to know what the life of people with this disability is like, but thanks to people like you who have no problem telling the truth, someone from the outside like me now understands and learns. Maybe it is because when I was a child and I came across to someone in a wheelchair I was curious to know things and everybody told me: you shouldn't talk to him , they Will probaby feel boder. and with you I learned it can be a good thing to ask questions if the other person wants to aswell.( i have to say when i saw the ladies who says hello to you i didn't feel it genuine) but I must admit that I probably would have been like them who came up to say hello without hugging because I would have thought it would be annoying for the person who is in a wheelchair or maybe that person is not the type who likes to greet with a hug so i would have just say hello and that's it. So I liked that you explained from your experience, from both point of view what you feel.
    I said it before i will say it again sorry if i write this wrong my english is not the best

      What a wonderful and honest comment! Your English is great!
      I think it's natural to feel unsure about how to approach someone in a wheelchair, but it's so much easier to just ask what to do than to do nothing. I'd rather someone try to hug me and not do it well than assume I can't hug.

    I feel most of what you're talking about is not being vulnerable... allowing what we feel openly in places like that and ultimately being judged by those who know f£ck all about disability... self esteem is another... I know for myself that my identity as a person is such I'm ok being vulnerable 1 on 1 but in a group its a no... I feel one has to feel safe to be vulnerable and if we don't we stop expressing our emotions which is a protection mechanism.. a coping mechanism...

    Very Deep today ladies! Another unique video! A couple of thoughts - My wife, who is disabled, was anxious about it, but found it easier to go to her high school reunion a couple of months ago, but she was also disabled back then. Tougher for you two. The comments about "Recovery" - that very much surprised me; do a lot of people expect that all people regain all function after an SCI? And do you Brittney get ignored by the A-B community and not get invited to participate in group functions, just because you are in a wheelchair? I hope that it isn’t the case, because you seem to be an organized passionate person about everything you talk about. Yes, Natasha - I will watch Mixed Crips real soon! And Natasha and Brittney, watch out if you see me in public - I am a hugger! lol

    • @EmpoweredPara
      @EmpoweredPara  5 місяців тому

      I'm not ignored, no. Bit I was definitely not included in things people assumed I couldn't do after I was injured. My grade 9 school trip I didn't get to go and not one teacher even inquired about whether o would be able to go. I wouldn't have gone because I wasn't independent enough then but it would have been nice to have been asked to go

    Actually, the major networks do broadcast Canadian shows in Washington state. I don't agree with the ask before hugging part. Feeling included is not the same as walking on eggshells around others. It's not sad either...you guys really need to chill. Seriously. Expecting people to include you is not the same as them being forced to be polite.
