The WiFi Coffee Machine - Review

  • Instead of going to a coffee house to use their WiFi, why not let a Coffee machine use your home WiFi ...or something like that. You can see the product and look at alternative reviews on Amazon UK amzn.to/1HZgkox (CLICK SHOW MORE)
    The coffee machine I'll continue using instead is a Senseo Sarista. It may be discontinued - but still available on ebay here: goo.gl/ewujtJ It used to require pre-filled coffee bean funnels, but Philips discontinued these and sold a refillable one instead that you put your own beans into. My old video about it is here: • Senseo Sarista Coffee ... and despite most of the comments and reviews doubting its reliability...it's still working fine almost 3 years later.

    Some people seem to be getting a bit vexed and indignant in the comments. Please don't get all hot and bothered - it's just a little video about a coffee machine. Just intended to be a bit of entertainment for 10 mins. Perhaps time to cut back on the coffee.

    I have a feeling that the people in charge of the company making it were one of those buzzword spewing hip corporate types that are completly detached from reality, and were promoted from the marketing department. Or maybe sales. I can imagine the meetings with the engineers now.

    In the interests of fairness, I should re-iterate that my machine is clearly faulty as far as the No Carafe error....and perhaps I should have realised that this was just a grind and brew machine - rather than a fully automatic machine. If you are satisfied with the idea of a Grind and Brew Coffee machine that can be operated via WiFi, then you might be more happy with this machine than I was.

  • @TheSoundrookie

    Hey Techmoan.
    Great video, but sadly not a coffeemachine I can recommend. I have recently thrown the former model without wifi out. Besides the electronic circuits it's the same machine, and it isn't very good. First of all when you use the grinder, the coffee gets way to strong, even when you set it to mild. And it only lives till the second the warranty is gone. Other people I know who bought it after I did, have had the same experience. Therefore be sure to keep the receipt, and pray that it dies before the warranty runs out. Then there's a chance that it will work a bit longer, or you get your money back.
    Don't get me wrong, I'm not at all hot or bothered. I find your videos cool and informative, including this one. I just think it's fair to warn about the quality of this machine, which only shows over time.
    May you have an awesome Christmas.

Just ten years ago I bought a Krups espresso machine for about £80 and it was superbly made - in Germany - with steel components and high quality plastic. I am still using it. Nowadays everything is junk. Stuff looks shiny in the stores but none of it lasts more than 3 months.
    Even the steel in our cars is being imported from China. We make hardly anything any more and have to put up with worthless junk instead due to corporate greed. An iPhone costs just £5 to assemble in a Chinese sweatshop...and how much are they retailing for?

    I'd been looking at this and a couple of other Wi-Fi/Smart Coffee Machines but was dubious about them. I got burnt by the whole Kreyos Smart Watch thing and have been more pessimistic about new things ever since. Your video confirms my worries and helps saves me money for now. I thought it would take care of the grinds too.

    • @Techmoan
      @Techmoan  8 років тому +1

      +Thomas Thorne I'm glad you thought it would dispose of the grinds too. I was beginning to think I was delusional to assume that. In my opinion, a coffee machine that needs to be cleaned out after making one cup is neither use nor ornament.

    • @TafT
      @TafT 8 років тому

      I know many fancy machines do need a manual clean as the automated ones leave a small amount behind that can taint the coffee. That being said I'd also expect this to be aimed more at lazy people who like gadgets than people who have a highly developed traste for coffee. I'll be holding out for an automated one or adding a Wi-Fi controlled socket to my old coffee machine for more.

    I still can't understand why the heck would you want your machine to brew a cup of coffee every time you get inside (or your phone finds your wifi). If I sit on my toilet and have my phone too close to the sink my wifi will go off (even though I have a powerful router. It might be the large mirror I have...). so I would get a cup of coffee every time I went to the toilet with my phone. Also, if I go take the trash out... wifi will go out (I live on the 8th floor). It doesn't make sense.
    This machine is just stupid. It is clearly badly made and it seems to me that nobody cared to test the app.

    Never realised Techmoan did a review of this untill i seen today. I have same version I belive, you can turn the carafe detect off (but you have to enable one cup) as well in the smart app not sure if this was the case with the orginal version of the app. My problem was I dropped the carafe out of the box so.. until i figured that out it was a paperweight.. and yes mine came with a cover for the beans..

    Since you like gadgets when it comes to coffee, consider the Aeropress. Designed in burger land, and creates one of the smoothest coffees I've ever had, its also is less acidic, so people with acidity problems can have coffee again. It's a bit of work, granted, but it's worth it.
    It's relatively cheap, too.

    2ft cord- kitchen appliances (at least in US) have short cords, so they are not dangling around the kitchen counter and causing safety issues. I heard from an electrician that outlets are required to be no more than 4 ft apart (or something like that) in kitchens- hence 2ft cords.

    Just to clarify - mine came with a lid... also it does do single cup as well as a carafe, there are instructions in the manual that tell you to remove the bit by the carafe with the spring and then in the app - set it to single cup mode and voila!

    Hi Matt, re microswitch issue, can't quite tell from the video but the filter appears to have a plastic tab on one side, just wondered if that sticky out tab bit needs to on the microswitch side? does the filter fit the other way around perhaps?

    • @Techmoan
      @Techmoan  8 років тому

      +Fpv Jersey This was asked a few comments back....
      The filter only fits one way around. The lip is a piece of plastic designed to enable you to grasp the filter and remove it from the inside of the filter holder. It is not there to press anything. If the filter was able to be reversed - the protruding plastic lip is quite some distance away from the button and the door is also unable to shut. (3).

    Great video as always! Looking at your Senseo Sarista machine, why did they discontinue such a machine ? It's exactly what I want... If they made that with Wifi and all that jazz it would be great!
    The fact that you need to clean the stuff out each time kind of defeats the point of this thing. Like a single shot rifle having to reload it each time. Not for me.

      +Forrester No problems with the Gtech AirRam absolutely love it - bought one for my dad and he loves his too.- It would be useful to have a spare filter set so one can dry out after washing whilst I'm using the other one...but they come with a spare set now when you register it to instead of the (useless) USB cable. I've changed my opinion on the handheld one though. Not enough sucking power and too hard to keep the on button held down all the time.

    My old fashioned dumb drip coffee maker had one of those vertical spring loaded switches which instead of presing a sensor, presses up on a circular piece of plastic situated at the bottom of the filter holder which opens up holes for the coffee liquid to drain into the carafe. If the carafe was placed normally, insufficient contact was made and the drainage holes would remain uncovered meaning the liquid would stay in the filter and would overflow making a holy mess of everything. The carafe had to be angled up slightly using the rim around the hot plate as a platform. How this design flaw made it onto a smart coffee machine years later is one of those mysteries.

    Having typed that I did a quick search to find that such a product does exist. In fact its made by the same company that made this coffee machine. Like this machine, the kettle has some issues of its own according to reviews and the 3/5 amazon rating.

    I think I know what went wrong. First time you closed the lid with the carafe in. This made that spring push the filter assembly up while the lid was closing and jamming the thing. Second time it worked because you closed the lid without the carafe in.
