B-roll is secondary footage, often with an unimportant audio track. It's used to cover up or cut away from the primary video track. In my show, when I start reading off my script-I don't want you to see that, so I cut to b-roll: a shot that relates to what I'm talking about. In a narrative, a character might point out a window. We could cut away to whatever's outside the window, without interrupting the audio of the character's voice. The "cutaway" shot is b-roll.
Real journalists make a distinction between news (reporting) and commentary (opinion), but I think as long as you deliver what your audience expects from you, either approach is fine.
Remember that "helicopter noise" I talked about last week? I forgot to prevent my Tascam DR-40 from doing it in this week's shoot, so you can hear it sometimes (if you listen carefully).
This was an awesome episode! I do all those things when making my show Check It! and its cool to see that I wasn't alone in my ways of getting a news show ready. Great episode.
I have to say I really like what you have done with Indy News. The videos you have done so far answer questions I suspect other filmmakers have even if I found out the answer another way. i sometimes find you had to watch but I do not know why, but as far as what you pick to do and how you cover it i feel you are almost always spot on. Anyway keep up the good work.
b-roll is very important because when you have some unwanted footage,, such as someone walking across the shot while the subject is talking in front of the camera, you can cut to your b-roll, which won't interrupt the story, and adds a nice style to your film/story.
Griffin, I have to say that Indy News is a show always worth watching. That's probably because of all that time you consume to have the high standards to the videos, which you showcased in the video. Even if I was a bit suprised. =) I also love that you are hosting Indy News, because I love these kinds of shows, which recap and let you explore on your own, if you want of course. Therefore I'm hoping you're will continue making Indy News as long as you stay on Indy Mogul!
The previous version of Final Cut Pro (7), which is more similar to Premiere, had a technique called "nested sequences." You could put a sequence inside anther sequence and edit it. (I wonder if you could do a similar thing in Premiere.)
B-roll as i understand it is extra footage that may or may not be important to the film / video but it's recorded. It's extra footage that can be decided to be used later.
I learned from the Numberphile video that when a UA-cam video is at 300 views, it'll let in one more before freezing. (This is a quality-control mechanism: after 300, UA-cam starts verifying that every view is legit, causing the slow update.) But in this case, three views, on three different servers all arrived at the same time, so UA-cam let all three in-thus the count freezes at 303 views.
I'm not shilling for the Cheesetop Burger (sold only in the Phillipines). I just think it's hilarious! Wouldn't all that cheese get stuck to the paper wrap?
The videos you use for b roles that you get from keep vid. Do you find videos that they let people re use? for royalty purposes? I hope I am explaining my question right.
Yep, that's how it should work. And that's an odd problem. Make sure that the files copy over completely (With video files it could take a while) and try ejecting it the correct way instead of just unplugging it. If this doesn't work, PM me and we can try to troubleshoot it :)
Hey Griffin, I've been making a news show for the past 25 weeks also, would love to hear if you checked it out and had any tips for me. For the graphics, do you have photoshop? I found that if you make a template with a clipping mask, all you have to do is paste it and save it, then you have your graphic. Thanks for showing us the behind the scenes!
TIP: Instead of using 'KeepVid' I recommend downloading and installing the 'UA-cam Downloader HD' which is much faster!! (and easier to use). There's also the UA-cam to MP3 version which only downloads the audiotrack. Handy for songs obviously :)
I see you're using the DR-40. I just bought one myself and I love it! What made you switch to it from the H4n. I know you did a whole video comparing them, but why switch?
I wish KFC or the folks producing Spider-Man were paying me, but they're not. Now that UA-cam owns this channel, our goal isn't about earning advertising revenue-it's teaching UA-cam filmmakers, and learning through the process.
Buy an external hard drive. You'll need at least 1TB. You can buy one for about 100 bucks. Plug it in, and throw anything that takes up space. (In the case of videos, this is most likely all of your raw footage) onto the hard drive.
Wow. I've been creating corporate video campaigns for years, and do almost exactly the same, from script, to highlighting headshots, video templates, KeepVid, etc. I've recently switched to Adobe Premier because I build my own PCs now (sick and tired of Macs crashing and dying on me, so now I'M in charge of how it performs). The build is fantastic, but I'm getting used to Premier. Any ideas on how to make a template for custom graphics like you showed with FCX?
Does youtube ever claim copyright infringement for using clips downloaded from youtube (through keepvid)? I have been wondering about how to get around this. Thanks!!
Hey I keep running out of space on my computer and it is effecting me on making videos. do you know how i can get more space on my computer? i know about deleting stuff and what not. All so i did not get a ipassport BUT i am still learning how to use it. Any info would be helpfull thanks. Btw i have a macbook. ( not pro )
Nah it sounded like you were forced to say that line! I really hate when people do that in their videos also, but you managed "the amazing spiderman" part really good :D. I really love your work very helpful and very cool to watch, but please don't ruin it with stupid ads (I know everybody need the money :) )
Hey, if I'm just getting started, and have no budget for a few months (and *NO* access to Mac), can you recommend the simplest way to get started making news videos that include b-roll, and showing slides & video clips over my right shoulder & such?
I'm guessing said somewhere that he uses compressor. I'm guessing he uses photoshop and maybe some sort of effects software (like after effects or motion) but, you never really know.
Griffin, what is your opinion about giving one's take on the news when making a news video (like giving your own opinion about the news that you report)?
Yea thats how it works with mine. It works like a flash drive But better. I drag and drop some things and there BUT when i came back for it later i only found one thing i needed in it.
Thank you for sharing this video. It is really helpful. I wanted to know how you were able to create your show intro... its pretty cool. Is it something you made yourself or did you collaborate with a graphic designer to plan the vision and audio for the intro? Keep up the great work!
Griffin, this show just keeps getting better and better. I look forward to each new episode!

Good question! I use software called iShowU HD to record video of my screen.
Probably the most insightful episode we have watched so far, great job Indymogul!
Real journalists make a distinction between news (reporting) and commentary (opinion), but I think as long as you deliver what your audience expects from you, either approach is fine.
That's a good idea for an episode. Thanks!
Yep!
Great epsidoe Griffin. Loved the step by step editing tips with the effects of your changes showing in real time.
Really enjoyed watching the 'making of' segment. One of my favorite episodes yet. Thanks Griffin!
You have an incredible talent at creating tutorials, especially at conveying why certain concepts are important. Thanks!
Before FCPX came out, I had a friend who used EDIUS and loved it. Sounds like a pretty good program.
Currently, only select partners, like Indy Mogul, are allowed to use custom thumbnails. That may roll out to all users eventually.

One can really appreciate this. Seldom do you see such insight into the actual video-producing. Thanx.

This has really inspired me to get filming again. This show is fantastic for ideas! Thank you so much guys. Well done!
Because my H4n has malfunctioned, but I hope to get it repaired under warranty soon.
Wow I never expected to be put on Indy Mogul news! Thanks Griffin!
awesome, that masking technique helped tons! :)
great video Griffin, love seeing all these behind the scenes things!!!
Depends what kind of stuff you like to shoot. But I'd bet that cleaner audio will do more to up your professionalism.
That was a really succinct and well-paced tutorial. Thanks for the effort!!
Thanks Griffin!
my favourite filmmaking channel. Thanks for all the great info & insight.

Yeah, even I'm a little confused by that part.
Thanks for the awesome video!
That shot was actually me uploading a 30-second video, which is why it appears to upload so fast. Usually my videos take 5-10 minutes.

this is very informative. I like the way you have streamlined your process to relieve yourself from headaches! Thank you for sharing!
this episode is brilliant, and very insightful. thank you.
I'm not shilling for the Cheesetop Burger (sold only in the Phillipines). I just think it's hilarious! Wouldn't all that cheese get stuck to the paper wrap?
As a camera operator its really cool to see the robotic camera operator, but sad at the same time
Very exciting, informative and helpful episode. Thank you so much Griffin =)

hey if you get google crome there is a extension that lets you download videos from youtube and not always having to go into keepvid.
TIP: Instead of using 'KeepVid' I recommend downloading and installing the 'UA-cam Downloader HD' which is much faster!! (and easier to use). There's also the UA-cam to MP3 version which only downloads the audiotrack. Handy for songs obviously :)

How do you get to choose a custom thumb nail for your youtube videos?
Even in 2021 this is still a great video, with useful information!!! :)
I wish KFC or the folks producing Spider-Man were paying me, but they're not. Now that UA-cam owns this channel, our goal isn't about earning advertising revenue-it's teaching UA-cam filmmakers, and learning through the process.
I'm always most excited about my next movie :)
Is it hot in Bloomington today? 96 in Chicago.

Hi, What do you think about OLYMPUS LS-5 as a sound recorder?
Wow. I've been creating corporate video campaigns for years, and do almost exactly the same, from script, to highlighting headshots, video templates, KeepVid, etc.

How do you put small videos in your big one, so that you can click on it and it will open??
Does youtube ever claim copyright infringement for using clips downloaded from youtube (through keepvid)? I have been wondering about how to get around this. Thanks!!

Hey Griffin, where do you get your production music from? I'm running out of creative commons options that aren't to weird to use.
Nah it sounded like you were forced to say that line! I really hate when people do that in their videos also, but you managed "the amazing spiderman" part really good :D. I really love your work very helpful and very cool to watch, but please don't ruin it with stupid ads (I know everybody need the money :) )
