Near the end this piece blames the trauma from October 7th for why Israeli military is committing war crimes against the Palestinians people, just minutes after acknowledging that this is something Israeli military has done long before October 7th??? NYT will do all it can to be Israeli genocide apologists while doing the bare minimum to report Israeli war crimes. Israeli military never saw Palestinians as human beings which is why they're committing war crimes and why they're colonizing the West Bank, not because trauma from October 7th. Suddenly NYT acts surprised Israeli military doesn't regard Palestinian civilians lives after they killed tens of thousands of civilians carpet bombing Gaza.
"why they're colonizing the West Bank" = Israel withdrew its own population from Gaza and handed it over to the Palestinians. In the first elections, they chose Hamas, which already had a bloody history at that time. "Israeli military never saw Palestinians as human" - I can’t assess the specifics of the Israeli army, but it’s worth recalling the time when Israeli hospitals treated Palestinian patients. This wasn’t that long ago, but Palestinians perceived it as a “culture of dependency.” I don’t think Israel would provide medical services to someone they didn’t regard as human. It’s true that Israeli policy has become significantly more radicalized - but this didn’t happen in a vacuum. In 2000, Israel offered Palestinians about 91% of the West Bank and the entire Gaza Strip. It proposed that the eastern part of Jerusalem, including some Arab neighborhoods, would be under Palestinian control. Israel refused the full right of return for Palestinian refugees but suggested a limited solution (some refugees could return to the newly established Palestine, but not to Israel). How did Arafat respond? He simply rejected it - and launched the Second Intifada. Palestinians started carrying out suicide bombings and shootings targeting civilians. Many Israelis lost faith in the possibility of peace with Palestinians. It was interpreted that even a 'generous' offer at Camp David was not accepted by the Palestinians, which reinforced the belief that Palestinians reject the existence of Israel. Of course, the plan wasn’t perfect - it didn’t fully address Palestinian demands regarding the so-called Right of Return, which is a sensitive issue for them. Yet Israel was willing to make concessions and genuinely tried - only to be met with the Intifada. The question is whether any arrangement exists that could enable peaceful coexistence between Israel and Palestine. At that time, Arafat gave Israelis the impression that Palestinians never actually wanted peace, and that their only vision of peace was a world without Israel. That said, I don’t want to put all the blame on the Palestinians - while they carried out terrorist attacks, they themselves faced numerous attacks, such as the Hebron Massacre (1994). Similarly, the Israeli army didn’t always act legitimately, even in its "better" years. I can somewhat understand the Palestinian sense of injustice. And that’s the tragedy of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict - it’s not a black-and-white issue. Your effort to see Palestinians only as victims is understandable, but it’s objectively incorrect and leads to the spreading of half-truths.

I’m trying to imagine the roles completely reversed and how I’d feel. Israel launched a cross border attack aimed at killing as many Palestinian civilians as possible (but I guess we have to imagine them with much lower military capability so they max they’re able to inflict is 12-1300.) they then take off their uniforms and hide amongst their civilian population, locate their headquarters in hospitals and under schools, and launch rockets from civilian areas. (Though pro Zionist activists dispute this, but it’s widely agreed amongst orgs like amnesty international.) Hamas decides to invade, and tells Israel that anybody who’s not IDF should leave a designated area; otherwise Hamas will assume they’re IDF. An Israeli tells a journalist that he’s not IDF, and that he returned home for something and Hamas apprehended him. He then tells the journalist that they forced him to walk ahead of them into homes that the IDF may have booby trapped, and into potential tunnel entrances where the IDF may be hiding. He tells the journalist that, in an active combat zone where all civilians have been instructed to leave, that the Hamas soldiers heard a noise and fired in that direction, and laughed with relief when it wasn’t IDF soldiers. We then learn that in the past, Hamas has had a practice of using detained Israelis to enter homes, we’re told to shield Hamas from harm in case the IDF is in those homes, but if we’re better faith, also because it probably makes escalation and fire fights less likely. How would I feel? Yea, I’d probably say this is bad. I’d probably say Hamas shouldn’t do it.
