Brings back some nice memories. My dad was a Studebaker man, and his dad before. I remember going to take delivery from the dealership in Indianapolis when I was 5 years old. A new car meant going to the drive in for supper.
The view of that car from the back and side was incredible. Probably the best and most unique I have ever seen. For $1000, it had to be a bucket of rust. Those old Studebakers with the 289 were the best sounding cars... the exhaust .
What a gorgeous car. An amazing find and an A+ restoration. The owner was an articulate and knowledgeable interview. Lou thanks for zooming in on his cruise in plaque that contained so much information. I like that you asked him how long the restoration took and his luck in finding the exact wire wheels on Ebay. You started to ask what the most difficult parts to find for the restoration and then got distracted. I wish that question had been answered. As always thank you for finding and including so many rare cars on your show. If you were not doing this who would be chronicling this automotive history?

One of the most beautiful vehicles ever built! I have had several 1964 Golden Hawks as well as many modified Larks and realize they never got the respect they deserved. What a shame Studebaker was forced out of business. Thanks for your detailed job on that Hawk. 😊

I love it. This brings back so many memories of my old man's GT Hawk. His was a metallic sky blue with the R1 engine. I have many childhood memories of him and that car, trips to the drive in movies, road trips ETC... a great car. sadly, it was a casualty of the violence in KCMO in 68. But the old man swore by that car until the day he died.

My dad had the 63 Golden Hawk. It looked much like that. Red, two door, bucket seats, 4 speed, Packard 289. The weight distribution was such that it was easier than you'd like to spin the wheels. A very solid and good looking car.

Fantastic car. Thank you for sharing this video. During my long life, I owned about 10 Studebaker cars. Among them, a 1957 Silver Hawk and a 1957 Golde Hawk 400 serie, automatic transmission.
What a great car!! Stude's were awesome. Friends of my family that lived down the street from us in the early 60's had both a Hawk and a Stude pickup. My mom got interested in the Avanti when it came out and in '63 test drove one! I got to ride in the back... a real deal and NEW 1963 Avanti!! I begged her to buy it.... she passed. DAMN!!

My childhood "girlfriend" lived next door to me. Her dad was a petroleum engineer, and flew all over a 3 state area in his job. His wife was ok with him flying about, but not with him having a fast car. No super sports, no Chevelle, no fuelie cars, etc. Enter the Hawk Gran Turisimo. Mr. Wood bought a triple black '64, with a 4 speed and power everything, and opted for those wire wheels. A more sexy car I'd never seen. It was a normally aspirated R1. He got away with it because Studebaker was known to his wife for building conservative vehicles. I rode in it a couple times. It was NOT conservative. Thanks for this story.

More Studebaker vids!! Love Studebakers and those fish tail exhaust tips. Studebakers always have a nice rumble out of em. Sounds great and great history to the car.

The wire wheels are an excellent elegance enhacement for such an already elegant car. Brock Stevens' design magic at work!!👍👍👍 Imagine, just imagine, if Studebaker had commisioned an optional Nardi steering wheel for the GT Hawk. Even the vent windows have a very European look and flavor(?).

Lou, fully subscribed as well as happy, with such a great channel. I always like to add a positive comment, particularly when it is a nice design, an excellent resto or a well engineered piece like Studebaker! Thank you for your replies on my replies!
@@loucostabile Most certainly Lou. Your videos are very informative and well done. They allow people like me to see vehicles that we might not have access to at all. Thank you for your fine work. Please stay healthy and safe as we all overcome this pandemic
Studebaker's designs were so far ahead of the time that they were overlooked. The Hawk, the Avanti would be considered modern still. What a car. Words fail to describe, just beautiful and it is a supercharged 4 speed. WOW. Thank you, Lou. I just watched the video on the AMC Marlin and now this. Today was a good day :-)
That Paxton supercharger is a "vortex" type, unlike the roots type like the GM series of blowers that are more common. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for those Studebaker Hawks...still a modern looking design.
My former employer had a 62 and a 64 of these GTs. Both were red, 62 was restored and the 64 was pretty rough. Both had the standard engine. Pretty cars. I got to drive the 62 while she borrowed my truck to haul antiques. Wished I had bought those cars before she passed away.
A barn find that has great individual Brook Stevens auto history, HOW COOL IS THAT!!! Definitely one of a kind. Thanks for sharing the video. Side note; The later production 1963 R-2 hawks opted for a 160 MPH speedometer, I know cuz I have 1 of those 277 4 speed Hawks produced with the Paxton supercharger and the 160 speedo. Second side note; most Studebaker owners have more than one Studebaker.
Reminds me of my grandpa Roys car, he had a 63 golden hawk, it was dark red with dark red leather interior, I thought the map bags on the back of the front bucket seats where the coolest things. Loved that car, RIP Grandpa

I have a copy of that issue of Motor Trend, among many others, from my dad's old subscription. It was so nice to see this car in this video today. Thank you.
The fact that Studebaker couldn't afford to invest in all new body stamping dies every couple of years is what made the fin-less version of this car appeal to me so much back when, as a teenager, I couldn't begin to afford any new car. It just had the look of a classic fresh off the showroom floor and still keeps it. Raymond Loewy just had the knack for aesthetics. What I couldn't afford then I sure as hell couldn't afford now. Lucky Hawk because I'd have to drive the wheels off of it so everybody could see me in it
@@jakekaywell5972 Gettin' rid of those hideous tailfins took it back more to the elegant lines of a '56 Power Hawk for me. The fins might've been a marketing decision by Studebaker and I'm not one to second guess anybody in a marketing business. But they would've been a disqualifier for me . . . If I weren't too "poverty stricken" to have ever bought one that is. Brook Stevens only had to know what time it was. It was finally time to get rid of those stupid tailfins.
@@icewaterslim7260 No kidding on that. I myself have a '62 GT Hawk as my first car. I got her because I love the history behind it, that it's unusual, and that the styling strongly reminds me of the English roadsters I was raised upon (Austin-Healey, MG, etc.) It took me SEVEN YEARS to get her and I'd sooner die than give her up.
From the dealer's lot to the barn, then the awesome event!!! This engine just sounds like any classic car engine. The sounds of a dream! Fact: For 1963 the car was slightly restyled, with refinements to the front, sides, and rear. Round parking lights below the headlights replaced the previous rectangular ones, set into the corners of the newly closed side grilles that bore a squared pattern of lines over fine mesh. This same squared mesh pattern was carried over onto the main grille, replacing the simple fine mesh of the 1962 models. Early in 1963 production the parking light bezels were changed and the right side of the dash became woodgrain, matching the area around the instruments. The doors had red, white, and blue emblems added next to the Gran Turismo emblems, and at the rear, the aluminum overlay's colors were reversed and red, white, and blue were added to the Hawk emblem on the top of the trunk lid. Inside, 1963 Hawks have vertical pleats in the seat upholstery, replacing the 1962's horizontal pleats, and have far superior vinyl, John.
Your car is just amazing, congratulations on all your hard work bringing her back to the beauty she once was these cars were simply the best. I bought a 1956 Studebaker Golden Hawk in 1964 with the Packard 352 supercharged engine with Stewart Warner gages i got it from a doctor who kept it in a garage and never went out in winter, my Hawk was prisine like your car and it was the very best i owned. Unfortunately for me i parked on a street one night visiting a friend and a drunk driver hit my Hawk and totally destroyed it. I could afford to restore it and i miss my Hawk to this day. Take good care of that Grand Turisimo, shes one of a kind and i hope you have her for many yeàrs to come. Thanks for sharing her with us.

1963 Gran Turismo I personally consider it " THE QUEEN OF THE SIXTIES " . THANKS LOU FOR SHARING THIS WONDERFUL VIDEO. PLEASE HAVE A GREAT DAY. GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU. KIND REGARDS , HISHAM ELFIKI
The only New Car my father ever bought was a 1963 Gran Turismo Hawk. It had the non-supercharged Avanti Engine and was Automatic Transmission. He went right to the factory in Hamilton, Ontario to pick it up. There were very few 1963 Hawks sold in my area that year.
It is indeed. I remember seeing one in person a few years ago. I wish I could've talked to the owner about the car. It was parked in a parking lot, and the owner was in a store shopping, so I didn't. Oh well. :)
Wow, one look at the B pillar and it looked close to my 63 tbird I had done in red and the door trim is close the panels on the doors that flowed from the inner cowls to the rear side window area . My neighbour bought an older Porsche sports version at a good price to restore, but there was a special VIN code that didn't match what the seller said about it. He checked with a Porsche Club and he had a rare version of the car for the engine . The Studebaker plant in Hamilton Ontario kept making cars until March 1966 but the South Bend engine supply line to canada stopped in 64 and he GM canada engines were priced higher than calculated for and profits were thin and production dropped to about 2000 from for the 66 where 900 workers lost their jobs.

I don't know how I've missed this episode for this long. But I'm glad that I finally stumbled upon it. THAT is a beautiful car. I've been a Studebaker fan since I was I little kid. And this is probably the nicest one I have ever seen. I'm not a big fan of red. But it looks great pin this classic.
To each their own subjective opinion, but although the basic body goes back to 1953, I think the '62 - '64 Hawks were breathtakingly beautiful. I happen to have an Avanti I just love, but the Hawks are truly elegant. Raymond Loewy was a genius.
I remember one of the local doctors has one of these many years ago when I was a Kid in Adelaide this was the seventies and I think he bought it new and kept it for years not sure of the model or year but it certainly left an impression on me.cheers Lou

Fantastic car. Thank you for sharing this video. During my long life, I owned about 10 Studebaker cars. Among them, a 1957 Silver Hawk and a 1957 Golde Hawk 400 serie, automatic transmission.
Hi Santiago, Happy to read you enjoy this "Fantastic car" :-) Glad to read you've had some great Studebakers too, Lou
LUVLUVLUV IT!
Among THE prettiest American cars ever built.
High praise.
We can all be grateful this car survived , and didn't get scrapped
Agreed.
I begged her to buy it.... she passed. DAMN!!
Hi Ken, Happy to read you enjoy this "great car!!" :-) Thanks for sharing your ride with Mom in the Avanti, Lou
I love it when they rev up these sweet sounding engines.
Fun to hear the cars run :-)
I have seen that Chicago auto show picture so many times. I can't believe I'm seeing the actual car.

What an incredible GT Hawk and the owner is just so proud and I can't blame him!
Glad to read you enjoy this one :-)
Hi wagonmaster1974, Happy to read this car brings back memories of Mr. Woods car :-) Thank you for viewing, sharing, and you're welcome, Lou

¡Bellísimo este Studebaker GT Hawk de 1963! En el minuto 6:58, me llamó la atención la toma que le hiciste al detalle de la placa en la puerta que decía: “Studebaker Corporation- Made in USA"... Excelente!
Hi Jaime, Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Sad that such an industry has ended ,,, distinctive, beautiful and practical design !!!

Sounds like a winner ,Lou
The wire wheels are an excellent elegance enhacement for such an already elegant car. Brock Stevens' design magic at work!!👍👍👍 Imagine, just imagine, if Studebaker had commisioned an optional Nardi steering wheel for the GT Hawk. Even the vent windows have a very European look and flavor(?).

Lou, fully subscribed as well as happy, with such a great channel. I always like to add a positive comment, particularly when it is a nice design, an excellent resto or a
well engineered piece like Studebaker! Thank you for your replies on my replies!

@@loucostabile Most certainly Lou. Your videos are very informative and well done. They allow people like me to see vehicles that we might not have access to at all. Thank you for your fine work. Please stay healthy and safe as we all overcome this pandemic
I had to part with my '64 GT Hawk (rose metallic) to finish college. I could cry.
Finishing college is a good thing.
Today was a good day :-)
Hi Rich, Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Happy to receive a "WOW" from you :-) Glad this video makes it a happy day, Lou
That Paxton supercharger is a "vortex" type, unlike the roots type like the GM series of blowers that are more common. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for those Studebaker Hawks...still a modern looking design.
Happy to read you appreciate this car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge.
Hi Marnie, Happy to read this car brings back memories for you :-) Lou
Great video. I used to see an example of those late model Hawks on a regular basis, driving near my home. Best version of that body!
Hi Michael Guerin, Happy to read you appreciate this car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing. Lou
You're welcome harrytrex. Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge, Lou
Reminds me of my grandpa Roys car, he had a 63 golden hawk, it was dark red with dark red leather interior, I thought the map bags on the back of the front bucket seats where the coolest things. Loved that car, RIP Grandpa

Nice break lights ! Idle and start up Sounds great
Hi Paul, Happy to read the details you enjoy :-) Lou
I like the clean sleek lines of the 1953 - 1956 Studebakers.
Happy to read you enjoy the lines of this car :-)
The fact that Studebaker couldn't afford to invest in all new body stamping dies every couple of years is what made the fin-less version of this car appeal to me so much back when, as a teenager, I couldn't begin to afford any new car. It just had the look of a classic fresh off the showroom floor and still keeps it. Raymond Loewy just had the knack for aesthetics. What I couldn't afford then I sure as hell couldn't afford now. Lucky Hawk because I'd have to drive the wheels off of it so everybody could see me in it
Hi IceWater Slim, Glad to read this one brings back teenage memories for you. Hope you get to be behind the wheel of one like this soon, Lou
I agree, but you should know that Brooks Stevens was actually hired to do the Hawk redesign for 1962. Ditto the Lark for the same year.
Lou, you always find the cars that we gearheads love. Thank you.
Happy to share with you, and you're welcome Rich :-)
Beautiful. So unlike other American cars of that era. Classy
Hi Paul M, Happy to read you enjoy this "Classy" car :-) Lou
Hi John Roberts, It is amazing from the barn to what we're viewing on this video. Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
I'm in LOVE! Great video of an awesome car! My Dad was a dyed-in-the-wool Studebaker man!
Hi Jeffrey, Happy to read "I'm in LOVE!" :-) Thank you for the kind words on the video, Lou
Hi Edward Videtic, High praise for this car :-) You're welcome, Lou

The only New Car my father ever bought was a 1963 Gran Turismo Hawk. It had the non-supercharged Avanti Engine and was Automatic Transmission. He went right to the factory in Hamilton, Ontario to pick it up. There were very few 1963 Hawks sold in my area that year.
Thanks for sharing your Fathers 1963 Gran Turismo Hawk story :-)
thanks again Lou wow that's a nice car
You're welcome Rusty :-)
Hey Lou. Lovely looking Studebaker. I've always loved pre-62 Studebaker Hawks, but I also love 1962 and later Studebaker GT Hawks. :)
Hey Jason, Glad you enjoyed the looks of this Studebaker :-) It's a "Looker" for sure, Lou
It is indeed. I remember seeing one in person a few years ago. I wish I could've talked to the owner about the car. It was parked in a parking lot, and the owner was in a store shopping, so I didn't. Oh well. :)
A work of art.

Hi Jeff, Happy to receive a "Wow" from you :-) Lou
Lou, I think you'll agree that just two words are needed to describe this, Cool Car!
Well said :-)
A beautifully looking car, one wonders why they didn’t sell more.
Hi David, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Lou
Hi Gary wood, Thank you for sharing and adding to the story, Lou

Well done again Lou, I enjoy your videos of the old cars. You bring them to life. Your train videos are great also. Thanks for posting. Keep 'em coming!
Hi Train Lord, Thank you for the kind words and the encouragement. I appreciate that. Do you have a amazing model train layout? Lou
Hi Lou, thanks for the response. Yes, I do have an amazing train layout and I am also a member of a train club which we have in an old British Colonial Railway station which was built for immigrant passengers coming to Outer Harbour Adelaide in South Australia, probably and unfortunately too far for you to come and video. You can see some of the videos on my Train Lord channel. My layout has a castle and my wife says she wants to be the princess haha, so naturally I am the Lord haha, hence Train Lord! I really enjoy how you present your car videos, especially the ones in the fifties and before 1964 or so. More classic I guess.
Hi My Train Lord & Princess, Glad you're enjoying 1964 and before (has a nice ring to it). Glad to read you're enjoying the Channel :-) I have not been to Australia yet....however when I do, it would be fun to see your layout, Lou

Hi Story Teller, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car, and glad to read you found this video :-) Lou
To each their own subjective opinion, but although the basic body goes back to 1953, I think the '62 - '64 Hawks were breathtakingly beautiful. I happen to have an Avanti I just love, but the Hawks are truly elegant. Raymond Loewy was a genius.
Happy to read you enjoy the design of this one, and great to read you have an Avanti too :-)
I agree, but you should know that Brooks Stevens was actually hired to do the Hawk redesign for 1962. Ditto the Lark for the same year.

Hi jon lennon, Glad to share a Model that's new to you, and happy to read you enjoy the design of this car :-) Lou
9:55 KISS...a spring powered belt tensioner. I love it. That car is definitely a find of a lifetime.
Supercharged and four-speed what a hoot.
2017 I wonder if he still has it.
It's a funny about styling. I think this car with all it's nice touches would still look a bit better with the same profile is the original design.
I never got used to the hood, add on tailfins and the abrupt drop of the trunk on Moms 1957 Golden Hawk.
