When my dad was in his 70's and 80's back in 1970 and 1980, he made rolled paper picture frames. He made a huge doll house which I still have. Also made a couple of log cabins, a ferris wheel and other things of interest. We had never seen any crafts like this before. He also made his own "tools" to roll the paper up.

I appreciate how you like to save/recycle things. With papers you make fun crafts that turn out amazing. Papers may be small but with imagination they could be a whole new world to explore.

Japanese have been making pots woven with rice paper and then varnishing them to make them water tight ..there are antique pots made with this technique that are hundreds of years old and still water tight as if they were used yesterday...we have such an abundance of paper and cardboard ..I always love to see how innovative and creative people are especially people in the third world who have a very developed since of learning to work with the resources they have it inspires me as well !Great video!I have subscribed !

you are saving the caps because, you can use soda can tabs and paper or cloth to color them for other art projects similar to the bottle cap basket you have. you can also try drawing a picture on them and heating them in your oven like the plastic togo box art thingies. So many wonderful uses for your plastic caps.

I'm now in my 60's but when I was in the second grade, we cut and rolled newspaper comics around small dowels, which the teacher then dipped in clear gloss. After gloss dried, we strung "beads" to make necklaces. I had mine until 3 years when I cut beads off of string and used them to make my best friend eyeglass holder to wear around her neck. She still uses it.

Super cool. When I was locked up, my cellie made a box for his art pencils using a similar technique. He used instant coffee to stain the tubes of paper so they looked like bamboo, and soap was the glue that held it together. Thanks for your video. Pity that we couldn't get UA-cam in the pen. ...Hey, Shannon!...I found a new bead""" configuration! Using a small skewer, & 1/2 page magazine, make the small disks,& then cup them out like your Madonna cones. (They look like little "Devo" hats)...Then mod podge the insides. Then glue 2 together, & now you have a nice big bead....I am also addicted to rolling straws...very relaxing...

Hi Shannon! Loved this video. You are so relatable. Watching this made me want to be your friend. Silly huh? About 2 years ago - probably the same time you were discovering and exploring this craft - I was doing the same thing. Everything you said in this video was the same advice I would give. Although I love working with newspaper to get the longest strips. I like to paint the rolled tubes then weave them into baskets. Using different colored tubes to create a pattern. I made a paint tray from heavy duty foil and used acrylic paint thinned with a little water. I watched the same lady you watched but I also watched a lady who is in Russia - (I think). I also use the wooden skewer like you use . But for thinner tubes that I weave in their round unflattened state - I use a piece cut from a wire clothes hanger. Found you through Kelly Murton demo on the mod podge napkin tip. I subscribed. Thank you! By the way...your hubby (?) sounds like mine. Cute!

You should make a basket to hold all your rolled tubes. I think that would get rid of a few million tubes! $4 million on Etsy for a funky basket might just get you a buyer that has more money than you have paper tubes! Nice trade-off!!

I saw an incredible self-portrait made from water bottle caps. Obviously they somehow had color added to them and they also used colored caps and at 4 feet away you can tell they're caps. But at 10 feet away it looked like the artist's face. It was in Springfield IL and the artist also made other things out of water bottles that were cool. If I can find a picture I'll post a link.

you can hot glue the plastic caps into an altoid tin to make a travel size watercolor kit, or into something bigger to make a regular sized kit, like a plastic box

This is the first video I watched and then became a subscriber. I do quilling, paper beads, paper bead jewelry and now have added recycled paper bowls. The tip about varnish made my day. I have been coating my bowls with Mod Podge and it doesn't seem to make them hard enough to suit me. So I am going to give the varnish a shot. Thanks for such an informative video that will help my craft business!

Hi Shannon Green - Thank you for the instructions for rolled paper for projects. I not only enjoyed watching this blog but I got a lot of laughs from your comments, and requests, especially when you asked to be told you why you have the bottle caps. I am certain you will come up with useful project, of course, when you do, please remember to share. It really is crafty to recycle products that accumulate - often times we're asked to recylcle something until the need is met, but when that happens some crafty person uses brilliance and creates useful uses, such as what you have done. Once again, I am glad I happened upon your "UA-cam."

Loved this video and am going to try this....as for the bottle caps ? I save them for my Grandaughter as her school saves them and they go to a recycling facility that converts them into outside benches for there school playground. They are weather resistant and because we live in Florida, they do not get real hot to sit on.

I think you save bottle caps for a fundraiser. You just aren't sure which one yet.
And as far as the people who post rude and insulting comments.. Who raised you? Weren't you taught if you have nothing nice to say, dont say anything? I'm pretty sure no one is holding a gun to your head making you watch.

I'd use a thicker skewer/dowel to roll the paper to make a bowl. Since you flatten the tubes they would be wider thus easier and quicker to make a bowl.

I'm sorry but using a book to do this is a waste and just shows how ignorant people are nowadays. If you can't read or don't care, ship them off to where they appreciated.

Tiago Nascimento And where would that be? In the U.S. it is not unusual for students to pay $200 or more for a single college textbook. It's a big business and because of that textbook manufacturers make sure to publish new editions very regularly so that older ones cannot be reused. The books I used were rejected by organizations that collect and redistribute usable college textbooks. That means I can repurpose them myself or donate them to a thrift store or junk shop where someone will buy them and repurpose them. Or I can toss them in the recycle bin. I am unaware of other countries that are in need of outdated American college textbooks. Enlighten me.

    • @PriscillaSwaney
      @PriscillaSwaney 10 років тому +12

I recycle lots of books. I saw the Cancer Thrift store throwing reference books in the dumpster, they can't sell them. This ole 70 year old fished them out. I make flowers out of the paperback book pages, the library book sale offer all kinds of books for a couple dollars a bag. Most third world countries have better internet than we do, and shipping cost just too much.

    • @glendapaul8040

Shannon Green I agree, with you and Penny Swaney, it is a good thing to recyle magazines and books that are just going to end up in the rubbish, especially with electronic things that you can read a book off these days. Old books have many many uses. :)

I disagree. there are some books that are just not worth saving, so making them into a journal that does have words you can read can not be a waste. people often use blank books as well. I think they are great.
