  • HS2’s first giant tunnelling machine - which launched almost 3 years ago - broke through today (Tuesday 27 February) at the end of her 10-mile (16km) journey under the Chilterns, excavating the longest tunnel on the ambitious new rail project.
The enormous 2,000 tonne Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), named ‘Florence’, is one of 10 machines excavating the 32 miles of twin tunnels on the new railway linking London Euston with Birmingham, and was the first to launch, in May 2021.
The breakthrough is a major milestone for the HS2 project, which will almost halve journey times between Britain’s two largest cities, while freeing up space for more local services on the most crowded part of the existing West Coast Main Line.
Designed specifically for the geology under the Chilterns, each TBM is an underground factory - excavating the tunnel, lining it with 56,000 pre-cast concrete segments and grouting them into place as it moves forward at an average speed of 16m per day.
Once complete, HS2 will dramatically improve journeys between our two largest cities and also free up space on the existing mainline for more local trains.

They should have kept it going all the way to the north. Stopping at Birmingham is an embarrassment. No point doing half a job. So much for levelling up the north.

Congratulations and well done to all; one day, the whole country will appreciate and benefit from this foundational (sorry!) piece of infrastructure work.

Huge undertaking, 3 years of near continuous driving of 10 metre wide machines, to make 16 km twin tubes! Well done to all involved. Will hopefully just be the first piece of the network - going to serve people for years to come 👏👏👏

Before people go on about their taxes and HS2 it is funded by borrowing money then repaying it back from receipt when opetating; the money the Tories are now saying will be given from canceling the Northern section is actual tax payers money!!

  • @RitaFarrow

    well done to all

  • @thegreathonourandprosper52

Worst paid building site ever, how can they justify pay us minimum wage? 😢😢😢

  • @meh.........

Wasting money again with huge signs, pyro technics, drone camera, 100s workers idle etc. Just do the bloody job and money left over by not doing this crap can be given to a cancer ward!

  • @johnburgess7165

No wonder you're over budget... Stop wasting money on flags & pyro and just get on with building. 🤷‍♂️

  • @sing_cycle_referee

An impressive achievement but why fireworks and flame cannons?!?! Enough money has been spaffed up the wall on this project without pyrotechnics that nobody will see!

  • @timhanser1943

Congratulations, what an accomplishment. 16km .

I hope that man at the end of the TUnnel boring machine didn't get crushed as his head was in a pickle.... But congrats to the HS2 team for pulling it off!

Congratulations Florence and all the the team! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😍

It's constantly checking its alignment and came out exactly where expected.
