This is an NBC task that is performed after a potential chemical strike. M8 Paper is a way to check for 3 different series of liquid chemical agents. It does not work to detect vapor or gaseous chemical agents. If you have the capabilities you should confirm the findings from the test by M8 paper with another means like an ICAM (Improved Chemical Agent Monitor). If you use M8 paper when checking your water supply and you have a positive detection. Then discard the canteen or container and it's contents in a way that will prevent someone else from using it. If only the container is positive and the contents are still uncontaminated then decontaminate the container without contaminating the water inside.

Get NBC drink through canteen covers, and won't have to worry.

You are still required to test the water before drinking thru the NBC cap. That cap is NOT a filter.

actually they still have it inside of the newer editions (example:warrior skills level 1 2015) but its under the name CBRN not NBC because they changed it for some reason so its still there but its under subject area 4 survive.

I was still in when they changed it to CBRN. Most of my career we used the 1994 edition. They started changing them every couple months after 9/11. The reason they kept changing was because they kept leaving out important tasks. I remember one edition they left out the entire First Aid section! We got replacements for that edition within 4 months. It seemed like they wanted most of the tasks to be on electronics like NVG/NVDs, GPS, radios, blue force tracker, etc..... They thought that was more important and started eliminating what they thought was no longer needed. Sections I saw disappear and maybe reappear later included First Aid, NBC/CBRN, Field Craft/Survive. If it wasn't the entire section it became tasks like Digging a Fighting Position (that was missing from at least 1 edition), Treating a Nerve Agent Casualty, etc... Now the climate has changed again and those tasks we were laughed at for teaching our privates (who are now your squad leaders) are considered required again. Ironic.

They changed it to CBRN to add Radiological. This just incorporates the threat of radiological dispersion devices as part of the global war on terrorism

I hope it’s not to late to ask but, Say you come across a dark liquid. And the m8 paper turns black from the liquid how would you see any color change.

If there was any color change we used to say it was positive, period. But you dab the chemical and in theory you should see a color change on the opposite side also.
