  • Emmitt Smith opens up about his draft day experience and the anxiety of sitting through much of the 1st round to get drafted. Coming off a 1-15 season the year prior, the Dallas Cowboys were not necessarily the best team to go to, but Emmitt was thrilled when he got the call... and the rest is history.

Well, I think Barry Sanders was a great running back. I don’t think he was a complete running back. Barry could juke you out of your own underwear, and before you even realized it, he’d be gone. I’m not sure if it was his father that had total influence on him stepping away, but I know there was contract issues and maybe things we didn’t even know about but his stepping away from the game so close was a disappointment…I will say he was fantastic and There are a few who could run like him… I still think Mr Smith is the definition of the most complete running back he could do it all, but just a pure Runner that will go to Barry Sanders, hands down !!!!

Yes, we can talk about the offensive line being a big part, but Emmitt Smith was great at breaking tackles and was a great inside runner. The Cowboys bread and butter was the lead draw and they ran it over and over again and teams just couldn't slow it down. Another reason is that Jerome Brown who sadly died in the offseason in 1992, the Eagles run defense just wasn't the same. Brown was that big run stopper and without him Emmitt was able to run for over 100 twice against the Eagles. Once in the regular season and the second in divisional round. People forget about Darryl "Moose" Johnston. He played big big part in the offense. Could run and pass blow wonderfully. Could catch the ball over the middle. Even better you can hand him the ball on 3rd and one and he would get it.

Even as NFL’s all time leader in career rushing yards, I think Emmitt Smith’s greatness is under appreciated. The vision, patience, pad level, and unbelievable balance were part of what made him special. Yes, he had a great offensive line, but even with that offensive line, there’s almost nobody else that could have achieved what ES achieved. As a rookie in his early 20’s, he was writing down his goals.
That said, I will always want to know what Barry Sanders would have accomplished with the Cowboys offensive line. I think we could have seen a 2300 yard season. More than one 2,000 yard season. Some people love to say that Barry Sanders danced around too much, you couldn’t count on him to hit the hole between the tackles. All I have to say in response to that nonsense is watch his college tape. At Oklahoma State, he had an offensive line that could consistently create sizable holes for Barry Sanders to run thru. Almost ever season he was in Detroit, their offensive line was below average, and they didn’t have a QB. So the reason Barry Sanders juked instead of hitting the hole is because there was no hole for him to run thru. I’ve heard Emmitt Smith say that he believes if Barry kept playing, he would have surpassed 20,000 career rushing yards. Barry averaged 5.0 yards per carry over his career. That’s VERY special.

I think we have a good chance to get there but this isn't the best Cowboy team since 95, not by a long shot. If you even look at the 99 Cowboys, the would murder this team. Granted, they lost Michael Irvin for good in the 4th game of the season but that 99 team, their fist game against Washington, they were down by 3 tds and still won the game. That same year, E. Smith scored 2 tds and ran for 140 years before half time vs the Vikings until he broke his hand. if Irvin had not gotten injured at Philly, they might of been able to win a Superbowl that year. I think the year Dez got robb of "the catch" was the best chance to win a Ring since 95 but there have been better over all teams before this team. @@VanBoy

Listed them 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 huh? I like it though I think Dorsett is 5, then Brown, then Barry, then Sweetness, then of course the #1 is the ALL TIME leading rusher and rushing TD scorer (in both the regular and post season) Emmitt Smith!

He’s a great running behind one of the greatest O-line ever assembled. I doubt his greatness if you took Barry Sanders and switched them. How do you think Emmit would’ve done behind the Detroit Lions O-line…??? Barry is a Hall of Famer behind the Detroit O-line…I highly doubt Emmit would’ve broke any records behind Detroit, that’s the difference.

Emmitt Smith was a good running back, running behind one of the best o lines in all of football. Sorry. But you are no Barry Sanders. Sanders retired early to get out and away from an awful team and organization. If he wouldn't have, you wouldn't have had the rushing title. Facts. No one, absolutely no one, could touch Barry Sanders. But to Smith's credit, even he stated that several times.

None of those offensive linemen were from the Walker trade. In fact most of them were on the team in 89 when Walker was still there and they went 1-15.
1991 was the first year Emmitt won the rushing title and Aikman was sacked 11 times in a game vs the Eagles. That o line is a bit overrated. They were nothing without Emmitt.
