The first release of the Gaia catalogue (Gaia DR1) is based on observations collected between 25 July 2014 and 16 September 2015 by the astrometric satellite Gaia, launched by the European Space Agency ESA in December 2013.
The Gaia data release 1 is published on September 14, 2016 at 12:30 CEST, at archives.esac.esa.int/gaia
This video explains the Gaia mission and some important parts of the Gaia DR1: Positions and brightnesses of more than 1.1 billion stars in our galaxy and additionally parallaxes (distance measurements) and proper motions of more that 2 million stars.
The GENIUS movie by Klaus Jäger and Stefan Jordan explains the main goals of the Gaia mission. It also contains statements from several scientists directly involved in the analysis of the Gaia data.
Financial support was provided by the FP7 Gaia-GENIUS project. The Gaia outreach work in Heidelberg is supported by the German Aerospace Center (DLR).

From 120,000 stars cataloged to over a Billion.. The mind boggles!!! Yet, I now feel so insignificant. And that's just within our own galaxy, let alone the now known Universe.
If you wonder how the animations were made. They were done with Gaia Sky, a program developed by us (Toni Sagristà with some support from me). Downloads for Linux, Windows and Mac: zah.uni-heidelberg.de/gaia/outreach/gaiasky/ . You can travel through the Gaia catalogue with a faster-than-light spaceship!
Wow, Wow and Wow!!! Count me in!
Exciting!
which could be constructed to include a 3 dimensional version of the universe , and mapping our position relative to the universe in general
a very interesting presentation, but what gaia is doing is giving us a 360 degree representation of the motion of stars relative to our (the earths) position in the cosmos, would it not be more benificial if it was directed at one point in space and this point was investigated to the limits of this gaia instrument. then we could reference the furtherest point , with our planet to get a more balanced view of where we are in the universe. !
Who Says space is totally black, it's filled with light :D
Nature of Light... it's not there, unless someone's eyes can see it... ;-)
Wrong.

This telescope will not see any stars magnifying it but will learn its location distance movement and orbits where as hubble or james webb will see the stars magnifying it into larger prospective.
Surely there is much life in our Vicente of the Milly way, and that's only in an extremely small bubble in comparison to the Galaxy, and more so if there universe.
The correct link for gaiasky appears to be : zah.uni-heidelberg.de/institutes/ari/gaia/outreach/gaiasky/
Perhaps we are only atoms located in the little finger of God and what we see and think is the Universe is only the underside of his finger nail.
This is great. I am hoping there will be an upload of audio or video of the actual event when 'discovering' supernova while demonstrating database.
Every time I try to explain gravity the gate keepers CIA\NSA delete my comment FML
What have you learned?
this by triangulation would give a more accurate position of the point of reference ( earth) !
We just want to know our position relative to the milky way. You wanted the universe. Pls learn to crawl first
