Carl Vine has a growing reputation as a prodigiously gifted composer. He has written over twenty works for dance, music for film and theatre, electronic music, and numerous solo instrumental and chamber works. He recently completed his sixth symphony, and is now one of the most widely performed composers in Australia. Born in Perth, Western Australia, he studied piano and composition at the University of Western Australia. In 1979, he was co-founder of the contemporary music ensemble Flederman, which specialized in the performance of new Australian music and presented many of Carl’s own works. He has given the first performance of several Australian works for piano, and has appeared as conductor and pianist in Europe, the United Kingdom, and the USA. The Sonata for Flute and Piano was designed to showcase both flute and piano as equal partners. The first movement uses continuous semiquavers to weave a chromatic melodic web, while the third (and final) movement uses the same device to create a driving rhythmic pulse. The central slow movement contrasts the flute's sinuous melodic ability against static ringing qualities of the piano. This work was commissioned by 2MBS-FM Radio (Sydney) with financial assistance from the Performing Arts Board of the Australia Council. It was written for and dedicated to Geoffrey Collins.
