Curious it seems Israel has been protected in their long History why weren't they during WW2

They were protected in that they are promised to exist (no matter what happens). However, that doesn't exempt them from the judgment they will face throughout their history (including the Holocaust, and other horrors they have faced). Even during the Diaspora, when there was no nation of Israel, the people were still kept so that they would become the nation Israel again in 1948.
Israel is being regathered in unbelief right now in preparation for judgment (of the 70th Week), and will then be regathered in belief in preparation for blessing (at the end of the 70th Week for the Millennium).
An interesting consideration is the Dry Bones vision in Ezekiel 37. In verse 11, God tells Ezekiel about what the dry bones represent (whole house of Israel), and God says that the dry bones are saying, "Our bones are dry, out hope is lost, and we ourselves are cut off." Then, in verse 12, God tells Ezekiel to prophesy that God will open their graves, cause them to come out of those graves, and bring them into the land of Israel. The Holocaust could very likely be alluded to in this prophecy. We know the "bringing them into the land of Israel" began in 1948. And prior to this verse 12 of Ezekiel 37, the bones are stating they are "cut off" with "no hope". What was something that happened (and ended) shortly prior to the establishment of Israel in 1948? The Holocaust, which would definitely cause those of Israel to think there is no more hope for Israel and the Jews...just right before God raised the nation of Israel again in history (against all that has happened)!
