    I worked at "Cooper Bessemer for 5byears starting when I was 18. A 40 ton piece was treated just like a 40 pound piece. The piece was loaded on the 12 foot table of the Berthies boring mill for a week or so. Shoveling chips all the time. Retired now sucks. I will forever have the memores of that BIG Mill. It became as a child for me to care fore eh. As I understand now the shop has closed. It was a wonderful bunch of years running things like the Mill and a 4 head mill with a 14 foot by 63 foot milling machine. Many more hours of shoveling cast iron from long, 20 to 40 foot ships engines and flywheels. A flywheel roughing cut could take a couple days and of course the finished piece took longer. When roughing a piece and an inch square insert would wear or break from the stacked tools everyone in the shop knew it, LOL. It was a mighty cry from the old girl. Not just a cry but a ROAR as you can imagine eh.

    @5:01 Wow! That piece was much bigger a few seconds earlier in the video. Where did all the extra metal go? 🙂

    I used to work for steel mill roll manufacturer Mackintosh-Hemphill in Pittsburgh in the 70's and 80's. 54" diameter rolls were cast in the foundry and turned in the roll shop. I think they may have been plate mill rolls. The foundry poured over 60 ton for one roll. They were over 20' long.

    lots of mistakes.
    FACING is cutting the flat end of the part or a shoulder, and the first part has many.
    TURNING is to make the part round, that is was was being done on the first three videos.

    They use the chips to band the part to its cradle once the part is complete.

    I do not see the bed semen'ts removed as there are none to remove for a big swing. An interesting video though.

    I wonder why do you call every traditional maching as a "CNC" operation?

    Seeing the big machines in actions was interesting. The creator's comments within the videos have little to do with what's being shown and even less factual basis. For example, 'older milling do not have a power feed option.' My Index mill which was designed in the early 1950s has a geared table drive with a multi-speed transmission designed in as part of the machine's architecture. The comment about lathe tools rotating is incorrect. Tools are held firmly in the tool post while the workpiece is rotated. No need to waste my time here.

      I think they are using a hardmetall insert, would go faster of they changed to a cbn insert and increased rpm and feed

    • @patrickpat8878
      @patrickpat8878 Рік тому

      @@williamvesterberg1107 yeah but in China they work at 1 cent per hour so whatever it take 2 weeks or 3 years to fabricate the shaft it will still be affordable…
