my oh my... this is some great tip for everyone. an old toshiba satellite m45-s331 i'm working on has a major screen issue. i just followed your tip, and the separate screen is on. i'm gonna order the backlight to see what happens. thanks, pal. we appreciate people like ya.
you know,, why did'nt i think of that, get another screen and plug it in, amazing, or i thourght of another way, you could get another inverter and plug that in! this guy is a genius. thank you for your help, i now do not have to think for myself.
hi great video!!!!!!!just 1 answer do i probe the inverter with any lcd display????? I mean if the inverter works with any size of lcds example the inverter of a 10.1 display will turn the backlitghk of a 15.6 display !!!!!!sorry im mexican = bad english ....thanks
that's quite interesting..to be honest, I have not done that. Is the scanner bulb a CCFL? If so then you can use it. I don't have a regular scanner with me, so I can't break it open...although I have one with LED.. If you can share your findings here then I will be more that glad and thankful for others to know..Thanx sir!
Thanks for this video , it helped me find the fault and it was my screen tube not the inverter that has gone, i have a acer 7730 and the screen was flickering and losing its color to a pink and i used a old screen from a acer and lighted up but would not light up on the 7730 screen when i put the inverter that worked back into it, so i may change the tube or replace it with a led kit
Helpful and great video but i need your help, my laptop display work fine for 3 to 5 sec and then it becomes very dark but not completely black. this problem is due to the inverter or CCFL?
i just burnt my finger while touching my inverter. I got a little burne point of the finger skin but i dont feel pain. What do you think? On the inverter output there is a sticker marked 125, i guess it means 125v?
I checked the service manual of the laptop and it's written: Output voltage (Vrms, no load): 1450Vrms Output Current/Lamp: 6.0 mA max So it is very high voltage but very low current. From what i've searched over the web and my experience, an LCD inverter output can burn you because it's very hot but cannot be dangerous, there is no risk of electrocution at all. A friend did the same thing touching the output and just burn a little as well. I think it is more like touching a soldering iron tip.
@DiogNewmen thats whats going on with mine, so i have a few questions: is the lamp for an HP Pavilion tx 2000 models easy to find is it cheap? can i install it my self?
Hello jarcomtech i wanted to ask I was having a problem with my alienwarem17x laptop the screen went out but I still can see the background with a flashlight can it still be the inverter or is it the bulb Thanks man for any advice
Guess I'll have to buy a screen to test this. Why does testing hardware require buying new hardware? Someone should make a testing device. Just connect the hardware like in the video and get feedback about if it works. Bought a laptop on eBay in a bad state. It was supposedly working when they shipped it, but guess it was on it's way out as screen won't work. It can display an image on my TV though. I'm guessing it's the screen or cables connecting screen. I can see no image even when shining a torch at it. I'm sure there should be an image if the inverter is dead, just a dim one. Also needs a new lid. It appears to be more work than I expected.
Hi Jarcomtech, I have a Lenovo/IBM Thinkpad T60P laptop, its screen/display started going blank from last one week very frequently, I have to close the laptop lid and open it to get the display back up again. I am tired of closing & opening the lid every 5 mins so I am using an external monitor with the laptop. Can you tell what could be the problem with my display? I suspect it is the backlight because when I reduce the brightness to its lowest the display stay up longer. Thanks.
@jarcomtech I don't have external monitor so i connected to my tv with two male VGA connector and it didn't show anything :S so what could be the problem? thanks for reply mate!! m still repairing this same comp since 3 months lol
I dont know if you are still responding, but my laptop powers on and the screen stays blank. I hook it up to an external monitor and my screen will show on the external and then magically my laptop screen comes on too. I unhook the external monitor and my laptop screen -stays on- until I reboot my laptop. It seems I always need an external monitor to get my internal to work. What do you think the cause it? (ASUS G73S) Thanks!
Hi, I know this thread is old but I have made a digital pic frame out of an old IBM thinkpad a30. It WS working fine until I added ram. When I put it all back together the screen turned white but it did boot to windows because I heard the windows sound. Do you think it could be the VGA cable? The invertor board or the LCD screen ? that is bad. Thanks in advance.
hi, I have a Gateway laptop NE71B and the LCD display is bright white. I am fixing this for someone, and they don't know, or wont say if it was dropped or not. I see no visible damage. Of course, it does output to an external. Could the cable , inverter or LCD screen be bad? I'm betting the cable is pinched. I haven't opened it yet. Thanks
I ordered the inverter and thanks to your video a 55 year old blonde woman was able to fix her laptop screen, however when I turned on my computer my wireless on/off button no longer lights up and works. Any idea what I did?
hey please is the green thing there the lcd inverter? mine only lights up wen i try to bearly connect it and wen i connect it all the way in it dont work it wont light the bulb that i know its working i just replace it, is that my main wires that connect the lcd what dont work or is it the lcd inverter? i have a thinkpad t60
"You need to have another LCD screen" ! You'd make a great doctor - "we'll replace your head to see if it stops hurting, if does then thats the problem" You buy the parts, then diagnose the problem - Well Done!
hi Michelle, I would be more inclined to say that you are having issues with your power supply inside your LCD monitor. Im not sure if you are willing to open your LCD monitor. If you do, then look for capacitors that had pop up.. trying searching in UA-cam about defective capacitor inside LCD monitor... You many need to solder the bad capacitor and replace with good one. This is just a possibility. I did not say it is 100% a bad capacitor. Capacitors often go bad inside LCD monitor...
hi, i have a question, in case of a screen with no backlight but have display, why do you replace an lcd screen? and not the inverter or bulb. because i have a problem with my asus fv6 laptop. i dropped it and after 5 days when i opened it there's a black screen, it seems the backlight doesn't work anymore. (display is fine, I can use it but there's no light) i brought it at the repair shop for diagnose, they said that i have to replace my lcd already, but i said no, because it really costs
Hi Jarcomtech, my laptops not working currently. I had a cracked lenovo screen and I replaced it. It works but the backlight supposedly can't be seen without a white flash light. The screen is led and I just can't figure out what to do. You can see the picture with a white light but otherwise it looks like a black screen without a white light. Why is this? And what can I do about this. Thanks again.
My Latitude D610 on XP Home powers up and shows the screen illuminated for a fraction of a second before doing dark. However when I point a flashlight at the screen I am able to see a very light image of the desktop. An external monitor works fine with the computer. What could be the problem? Do I need to replace the inverter?
I got strong pungent smell and LCD went off. The display is not working. I have disassembled the monitor and there is no signs of burnt circuit board. Now how to check inverter is working or not? or ccfl is gone bad?
Try to press the Fn and F8 keys simultaneously to see what happens. I'm not sure if it is the F8, because it varies depending on the model, but it's the one that has a small screen in it.
Hi mate i followed you instruction and concluded that LCD inverter is broken cause there was no backlight. I ordered another inverter and is still not working :S COULD it be mother board? or something else? if its mother board what do i have to check? Please help mate!
Thanks for the response! Hmm perhaps. It's weird. I still see the picture behind this dim rectangle but Images stay in it for a couple seconds it's bothersome haha. Also noticed red and green colors. I'll take it in to a repair shop and see what the problem is.
someone dropped my laptop now I have a silver screen with horizontal lines in background, you can lightly see a rectangle box also in the background. should I just replace my screen
Hello, I replaced the inverter in my broken laptop but it didn't fix the issue. When I turn on the laptop, I can see the screen backlight blinks on and off really fast while very dim, but the entire LCD is black. With the old inverter, when turning on, only the bottom right of the screen would turn on and off really fast but would be very bright. Is my replacement inverter DOA, or is it the CCFL? Salamat Po!
@choppersteve22 no, it's not pointless. the problem lcd is with my toshiba satellite m45-s331 notebook. i took an additional/extra lcd from a dell latitude d610. it worked. his idea is great. try it; good luck.
I have a hp g61 laptop...when I power it up ,all it shows is a black screen. I would try and power it up a few times then finnaly the laptop would start and every thing would be fine.. but now when I turn the power on I get weird writing on the screen and I cant make out what it is showing...I have a video on you tube but had to answers to my problem..any help would be appreciated..thanks
i have my sharp aquos 32 inch LCD IT TURNS on for about 30sec. to 1 minute after that red lights goes blink and display gone after that turn on again same problem. sir which we need to replace the power supply or the mainboards? THANKs

I have a question. My loptop screen bavk light is not working but theres a display in the lcd when you light it.. whay may the cause of this problem??tnx
My Lcd has a grey dim rectangle at the bottom of the screen. After a couple seconds there will be Image persistence only in this rectangle. The rest of the screen is fine. Could it be I need a new Inverter?
The most common mistake in diagnosing a no video issue on a laptop is the belief that when you connect an external monitor through the VGA or HDMI port and get video then it must be the LCD or inverter that is bad. That is simply not true. You techies know this but most users do not and my post is intended for them only. In fact I know of a lot of techs that fell victim to that myth.
Hi, when you said that it sparked, then I immediately suspected that your inverter board got shorted. And this could be the reason why you got faint display because there is no power going to the CCFL or the bulb/backlight. I have a detailed tutorial on how to test an inverter using a mulitester but I'm still finishing the video. I don't know if you can wait for maybe another 2-3 days. I have an excellent technique to really test if inverter needs to be replaced. Nevertheless, good luck!
Hi I need your help. I have a laptop, I will change the display and inverter but only can see a faint image. research is dimmer problem, I have to connect 5v to the investor to maintain a level of brightness, but do not know how, can you help me?
Hello. My computer screen was broken by me back in may. Month and a half later, I received new screen to install. I connected it and it worked but the plug came out. Re-plugged it in and the plug sparked blue. Unfortunately the battery was still in during installment, not good. Got a new screen, because that what I thought was damaged but it still shows a faint image. Tried the ram stick and held power button fix but it didn't work. What should I do or what is the problem Plz resp with solutions
Hello my screen does not light up but when a torch is held to it you can see the screen in the background , not sure what to replace inverter or bulb or whole board?
(continued...) then you might want to check for those SMD (surface mount device) fuse(s) near the video connector. I wouldn't advise to connect a 5V dc to the inverter, because right now we don't know how much voltage does your inverter need to power it up. We need to get a schematic diagram first to see the required voltage. It might be a 10V to 16V. So putting a 5V is useless. Although your idea is a good one for lab purposes that is to provide external power to the inverter.
i have a thin blue vertical line in the middle of the LCD screen with normal pictures/colour [15.4 inchs], also, when a projector connected through the external vga port, there is reddish tint in the projector screen, but no thin blue line seen. [ but laptop screen is normal colour and also contains the middle thin blue line], is this due to defective inverter or dective LCD screen ? can i replace HCL laptop inverter [GD 8252, p/n 411814500008] with any other generic inverter board?
i don't think that's an inverter issue. The sole porpose of an inverter is just to power up the bulb. It acts like the ballast of a regular florescent light. You have some display showing, then it means the bulb is working. Im more to saying that your lcd screen might be the issue. Good luck!
How about you just use a good old fashioned multimeter instead of a spare LCD? Since I doubt anyone has a spare LCD lying around. You should get around 12V from the LCD end of the inverter. If you don't read anything or far less, then the inverter is broken. If you read 12V, it's the backlight.
@gimpsatchel Instead of just being a troll, explain how you do it so that people that are wrong in your opinion get it right. And like I said, not everyone has a spare panel. So keep that in mind while you're at it.
did you check if your notebook 'power option' setting was to set to turn off display after 15 minutes? You can select power plan and change settings in your Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options. If you have time I have existing videos on how to extend notebook battery life and I explained in details on how to adjust power options. There are two parts... You might want to check them. Just go to my channel and search for them. Good luck!
If you don't have a spare lcd panel to test with, you can do a test with your multi meter if it is able to detect radio frequencies (Hz) setting: -also, this method is way quicker as you dont have to remove any parts usually. 1. Position the test leads about 1/16 of an inch apart. 2. set multimeter to Hz. 3. power on the unit with the inverter board and wait for it to compltely boot up, slowly move the leads of the meter near & around the inverter. Look for any reading on the meter: No reading means the inverter is faulty. Any reading and the CCFL is the culprit. Read whole article here: smallbusiness.chron.com/test-laptop-inverter-70183.html
Anyone who is serious about being a tech and cares about the accuracy of their diagnostics. I have an extra LCD and I care about the accuracy of my diagnostics not just for the sake of my business but for the customer's sake as well.
my problem is when i turn laptop on a minute later the screen goes off , but yhe laptop stay on . i push the little power button bye bottom of the screen and screen comes back on , for about a minute and then off again. power stays the laptop. CAN SOMEBODY HELP OUT. THANK YOU
No kidding.. test an lcd screen, plug another one in... no fucking shit.. if i had another one .. hesus sheet... hawd dam.. genius.. show me how you test the battery.. should i try another battery? Wait while i buy another laptop so i can test this one..
Hi Jarcom,

Helpful and great video but i need your help, my laptop display work fine for 3 to 5 sec and then it becomes very dark but not completely black. this problem is due to the inverter or CCFL?
yes because we all have cracked 16 inch LCD screens just laying around..

When the lcd gets 'dead pixels', is that a phyhsical problem with the lcd or a problem with the electronics of the lcd.

Hmm I have tried 10 different inverter boards on 5 different screens. Maybe the cable sending power to the inverter could be dead ?
hi, i have a question, in case of a screen with no backlight but have display, why do you replace an lcd screen? and not the inverter or bulb.

COULD it be mother board? or something else?
if its mother board what do i have to check? Please help mate!
@sorizaga - It's like 400Hz (squarewave) at 200V so most multimeters can't measure this.
do invertrs make a buzzing noise when there going out like if you turning the screen brightness up and down
Thanks for the response! Hmm perhaps. It's weird. I still see the picture behind this dim rectangle but Images stay in it for a couple seconds it's bothersome haha. Also noticed red and green colors. I'll take it in to a repair shop and see what the problem is.

Hello,

no, it's not pointless. the problem lcd is with my toshiba satellite m45-s331 notebook.
i took an additional/extra lcd from a dell latitude d610. it worked.
his idea is great. try it; good luck.
thank you for answering me, you have been very helpful
i guess im off to buy a new screen now.

Mr technician, good job. tks.
my sony laptop LCD is flickering what would be the reason why it is doing so? is it the inverter? or i just have to change my LCD screen?
please help
So what's usually the cause? A bad or loose LCD connector ribbon cable? Something else?
I think you might have made a mistake in diagnosing the problem.
Its likely that your backlight is the one that went out and not the inverter board.
Backlights are usually far more susceptible to going out because they basically 'burn out' after a period of time.
I have replaced the inverter on my laptop and the screen will now work but the backlight goes out when unplugged from the charger for 10 to 15 minutes , I am thinking it might be the battery but wanted to see if it could be something else first , any ideas

My Lcd has a grey dim rectangle at the bottom of the screen. After a couple seconds there will be Image persistence only in this rectangle. The rest of the screen is fine. Could it be I need a new Inverter?
if you have an invertor you have to have a backlight, the invertor is what converts DC to AC in order to power a back light

What about using a bulb taken from an old scanner to test the inverter?
Hello my screen does not light up but when a torch is held to it you can see the screen in the background , not sure what to replace inverter or bulb or whole board?
thanks for the video really helped me a lot.
check this out, same problem, but when i disconnect the powerplug from the laptop the screen stays on with just battery power, could it be my battery
+Anthony Moore take out your battery?
Be very careful with this.
Some inverters have very high AC voltages up to 700 volts.
It's very dangerous so close to the board.
(continued...) then you might want to check for those SMD (surface mount device) fuse(s) near the video connector. i don't think that's an inverter issue.
Thanks, i didnt know i can plug any size of lcd ;)
Thank you all for your various suggestions and tuitorials...
Thanks! This works great!
does it matter which way the backlight connection goes to the inverter?
That happened to me before. I just got a new computer, It's probably the inverter.
thank you sir, i'll your guided method
@gimpsatchel Instead of just being a troll, explain how you do it so that people that are wrong in your opinion get it right.
And like I said, not everyone has a spare panel. So keep that in mind while you're at it.
did you check if your notebook 'power option' setting was to set to turn off display after 15 minutes? You can select power plan and change settings in your Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options. If you have time I have existing videos on how to extend notebook battery life and I explained in details on how to adjust power options. There are two parts... You might want to check them. Just go to my channel and search for them. Good luck!
why delay in lcd backlight delay...?
Thanks dude!
My inverter is in the body of the laptop, I can't figure out how to access it. I have the sf410
If you don't have a spare lcd panel to test with, you can do a test with your multi meter if it is able to detect radio frequencies (Hz) setting:
-also, this method is way quicker as you dont have to remove any parts usually.

Anyone who is serious about being a tech and cares about the accuracy of their diagnostics. I have an extra LCD and I care about the accuracy of my diagnostics not just for the sake of my business but for the customer's sake as well.
1 Kilowatt should be 1 KiloVolt... Even though my laptop gets pretty warm, I'm sure it does not burn over 1 Kilowatt...
There's no sound on this video.
