Justin didn’t begin playing with Tool until halfway through Aenima. Prior to that Paul D’amour was their bassist. Justin has been credited as the catalyst for their evolution into the sound they now maintain. But Paul was a pioneer.
Sweat is 1st on Opiate. In that short song is a hint of everything they've grown into. I don't think Justin changed their sound. He just does it a lil different than Paul. It still fits
Nah, As a bass player for over 20 years, Paul was clutch but he was still within the scope and pocket. Justin took them musically way beyond that. Now, I love this song and this era but if you think that Paul is anywhere near Justin as a musician and a contributor, you are an idiot.
@@munkeeBraynStoo Justin didn't just change their sound: Justin is what made TOOL TOOL! No one, probably not even they know it, but without this change, TOOL would have remained one of the great bands to emerge in the 90s and, if they had lasted long enough, today we will talk about them as we talk about Faith No More or Alice In Chains. .. Beautiful, unrepeatable, grandiose.... But not TOOL.
If you’ve ever pondered how the Tool Army was amassed, imagine a generation that heard this in full album form at 10 yrs old to 20 yrs old. That’s where the OG’s come from, to turn a phrase. Love your channel!👍
I’m a 1%er as I prefer Paul D’Amour over Justin, but they are both my favorite bassists. It’s just that Paul is actually playing bass more traditionally on Undertow and Opiate. Fun fact: Paul is the current bassist for Ministry.
I also was more into Paul's heavy/aggressive basslines and playing style over Justin's more melodic and technical approach, but - of course - like them both. There's just NOTHING like that bass intro to "Hush", though.... 🖤
I would argue that if Paul had stuck with the band, Tool may never have found the sound that most of us love them for. While I really like Undertow, the more conventional bass lines in early Tool are exactly what feels slightly off to me. Without Justin’s more recognizable sound, it feels like there’s just something missing.
Intolerance is such an underrated Tool song. It’s so raw and visceral but polished. Intolerance and Prison Sex are one of the best 1 2 punches for opening songs for an album ever
I was very upset upon hearing that Paul had quit the band because his bass tone absolutely could not be argued with. Thankfully, they got Justin, who took his sound just as seriously.
Its not just you. Ive been a Tool fan for 25 years and can count on one hand everyone I know who likes them too. Seeing them for the first time this fall. Stoked big time..

Thank you for the re-reaction! Yeah, most Tool people are on the path, and make great friends. We are that certain kind of person, we change when Saturn ascends, we give away the stone, and we could go on and on, but no one is innocent. I needed to unlearn some of the things we all learn, but I had to find the right TOOL. I remember waiting impatiently for my local music store to have the newest Tool CD... I am in my 50's now, and still learning from Tool. The way their music sounded both dissonant and in harmony, an audio contradiction that felt so good to my young mind. Strings and drums like thunder and a voice so smooth, yet thunderous when needed. They take me 0 to 180Mph and back and it is exhilarating. Tool is. 😀
As a winemaker, the trick to fruit flies is to get a Mason jar, put some vinegar (1/2 cup) in it along with a healthy squeeze of dish soap. Put Saran Wrap on top of it, and use a rubber band to secure that. Now, put a pen/pencil sized hole in the Saran Wrap. Perfect fruit fly trap. 😁
Was getting my first car stereo upgrade in 1997. When the guy was done, I brought this albumin to test it out. He looked worried and said, “had I known, sir….give me a few more days.” I tested it out with first upgrade and it was pretty weak. A few days later, though, we were off to the races. It wasn’t just loud, it was clear as hell at ridiculous volumes. So many good times. Tool, Primus, Oysterhead…all good.
Heh. I had a '1997 Pontiac Firebird with 18 speakers in it, and I always used T00L's music to set the levels, because - as you said - I was looking for tight, punchy bass, rather than the farty ground-shaking that was popular at the time. Marilyn Manson's "The Dops Show" is another ultimate level-setter for a stereo system, as the mix is just so that if you get it dialed-in, it will sound good with about anything else.
Paul D'Amour was bassist on Opiate and Undertow! Justin came on during Aenima. BTW, I appreciate that you are reacting to pre-Lateralus Tool! Undertow is a great Album
Walked into Tower Records early 90’s and listened on headphone sample disc of this because I thought the artwork was cool. Only took about a minute and I was off to the checkout counter and the trip has never stopped.
Watching them open up Lollapalooza 93 in Philadelphia - after Rage Against the Machine just spent their 30 minutes standing still on the stage, completely naked with their hands covering their junk, duct tape over their mouths and P M R C scrawled across their chests to protest Tipper Gore’s Parents Music Resource Center (which was essentially a pro-disinformation group of culturally conservative Christians whose main objective was to get music they considered vulgar, indecent and a bad influence… banned from store shelves) - with this song was mind blowing. Like Rage, at the time Tool was barely starting to get a following, but the crowd exploded when the apex of this song hit and it was fantastic to watch in person.
Sometimes the second listen is just as good as the first…their first album is better than most bands in their prime. True testament as to how incredibly good this band was even before they began to test the limits of their potential
Always wondered what tool would have been if Paul stayed...guess I'll never know. Heard/felt this album when i was 14 in 93' was insane then & still carries the same weight 30yrs later.
Take a small jar with a screw on lid and poke some holes in the lid with an ice pick or nail punch so that the holes are just large enough for the gnats to crawl through. Then fill the jar with apple cider vinegar and put it in a location close to where the gnats congregate. The gnats will be attracted to the apple cider vinegar because that is the smell rotting fruit (gnats' favorite meal) gives off and they will down in the vinegar. Cheap and effective.
Pour boiling water down your sink drains. I don't know exactly why but it's a tip i heard for fruit flys. Probably flushes away anything stuck to the pipes they're being drawn to.
I don't know how you have the discipline to not sample more often. I'm really enjoying your reactions, you're very smooth with them. Let's see another one from the Beastie Boys but not Sabotage or Intergalactic. Thank you.
Re: Fruit flies, put apple cider vinegar in a jar, cover with cling film, poke a bunch of small holes in it. They can get in, but not out again. Always works a treat. Enjoying your reactions :)
I think the point of putting out a new album for artists is so it gets exposure but I find myself still listening to Tool rather than anything else. They are that good.
I like APC, but their music is more mainstream and not as complex/creative, at least to my ears. So, if you really like what MJK brings to Tool, then you will probably really enjoy APC. But, for people like me that have a greater appreciation for what Adam, Danny and Justin bring, APC is just another good band. I am just so thankful that these guys all got together and have stuck it out - they have always produced masterpieces.
