- Gullahs are a unique group of black Americans located mainly along the Sea Islands of South Carolina. Their custom of basket-weaving is one of many unique cultural practices. Sweetgrass basketry has become a recognized art form in South Carolina and gained international attention. As the culture spreads, concerns over threats to the Gullah's valued tradition have grown. Basketweavers worry machine-made baskets could hurt their source of income.
