It is criminal that this show, or the Wembley one from this tour has never been remastered and given an official release on blu-ray. Take my money! Make it happen!
Couldn't agree more. I love MK, but why is he so uninterested in his backwards catalog? We're really missing something from the '80 and '85 tours, and there's tons of material available. Other artists like Bruce Springsteen re-release literally everything they find in their vaults these days in the best possible quality for like a couple of bucks. And there's more - Sultans of Swing as played on the 91 tour was brilliant, there have to be perfect quality recordings from "On the Night" somewhere. And Portobello Belle missing on the Alchemy DVD really makes my heart ache. And you get reminded EVERY TIME you listen to it, when you hear the last seconds when Tunnel of Love starts....! God it's so frustrating.
I think is not that kind of musician. He is not interested in what he did in the past, he keeps working and doesn' t matter of the past, he just needs to spread out what he feels inside
Totally agree with you. Wembley 85, Australia 86, another songs from the Alchemy tour like Portobello Belle and some live performances from the last tour from Nimes, Basel, Los Angeles etc. deserved to be remastered and published on official cd/DVD. In the last tour I remember Sultans of swing Basel, Telegraph Road Nimes, Tunnel of Love Los Angeles, Planet of new Orleans Bruxelles, Setting me up, I think I love you too much etc. All these songs were played with immense class and wonderful expression by Mark and the band. The old fans deserve that gift and the new generations must discover the power, the poetry, the class and the magnificent art of Mark Knopfler and his Dire Straits.
I've said it before but it's just not normal what he can do with a guitar. It just isn't. I don't care what other people say but he is by FAR the best guitar player that ever walked the earth. Period.
He is a genius. One small advantage he has is that whilst he plays right handed, he is actually left handed so unlike a normal right handed guitarist his fretting hand is his dominant one. Having said that it's amazing how he can finger pick so brilliantly with his weaker hand. You can't teach someone to play like this it's just something natural for him.
I loved this song for decades, rediscovered it, and have to admit: I put it in the Top 100. Top 100? Yeah, those songs/compositions are on a level where it becomes very difficult for me to decide whether one piece is better than the other. Music is one of the most beautiful gifts nature gave to human kind. And at the core of its beauty is diversity.
This song is the most underrated rock masterpiece EVER! The melody, the harmony, the astonishing skill in create and perform the melody of every single guitar lick, the incredibly poignant and melodic solo... GENIUS, SIR KNOPFLER, GENIUS... Care for my soul everytime i hear it, thank you!!
I agree totally. I am sitting here listening to Dire Straights, Tunnel of Love still amazed after all these years how such quality songwriting and musicianship was recorded in the 80s. How did Dire Straights ever make it at such a vacuous time for rock n 'roll? These guys belonged in the hard driving 70s when rock n roll was war and took no prisoners. Well I'll tell you one thing, these guys were the best band of the eighties by a country mile.
Totally Agree with you Mate, Told the same to my family, hope they won't forget to play it even if I prefer beeing Alive to Enjoy this song Every Times (so many) without ever getting tired of it (Never) Amazing Tunnel of Love...
For me personally - the best record of Dire Straits. Next albums were great, but no other had such moon, no other was such junction of perfect composition, arrangement, romantic climate and simple but amazing guitar play.
A guitar genius at work. There is no one better what Mark can do with a guitar. Tunnel of Love is a pure example how good he is. I never will get tired of this song.
The thing a lot of people don’t know about the solo is that at 9.07 he gets lost and almost makes a mistake that would unravel the whole thing. But because he is a freaking machine he realises exactly where he is on the fretboard and bails out to resolve the bar perfectly - like he meant to do it intentionally. He then looks over at Jack Sonni (who would have identified the near-miss) and grins as if to say “shit, we got away with that one!” Even when he makes a mistake he turns it into gold….
He such a talented musician with best ever song words and mellow guitar parts and has a angelic rare type of face that no one has and also the name " Mark Knopfler" what a rare name. He is god.
Have you ever heard anything quite like this, it's genius, marks phenomenal they say George best was sent to play football well Mark was sent to deploy the art of guitarism there's just nobody like him, I'm so glad he didn't go down the same road as other rock guitarists and just make noise, it's almost like you can understand every note as much as every word of the song you don't get that with other guitarists he's way beyond them 🎸 👌
Knopfler is just astonishing! What he is doing here is just not normal. He is playing triads and chord tones in a way nobody else has ever done then he plays chords while bending strings. The guy is a genius and a very beautiful and humble human being at the same time. A real gift to humanity.
I'm proud to be part of this group of real fans of MK. We share the emotions his genius runs through our hearts.. a true genius, poet and unrivalled guitarist
I have to say it again - The Best Live Band Ever, on every tour they did. ❤ Some bands are commended for their ability to influence and inspire other musicians. Dire Straits is not one of those bands, simply because nothing or anyone will ever be able to replicate them or Mark Knopfler, who is the most inspired and unique guitarist and songwriter I've ever heared. Nevertheless, he is such a modest and humble man. However, we, his fans know this is the truth, don't we.❤️🎶 ❤✍️❤🎸
For me, this is my favorite performance of TOL. That solo of Mark killed me when he smiled. Just love Mark whatever he does with his music. What a genius! ❤️
Just how amazing it is when mark passes the singing duties over to his guitar and that guitar sings its heart out ...there is a lot of amazing guitarist out there but none can make their instruments sing like mark can ..
Out of all the versions, I think this one just pips it for me. The guitar tone is perfect, the beauty of each note played as if it would be the last time they would ring out. Honourable mention for the improvisation at 10:06 - magic!
There's a great version on UA-cam from Wembley around 1985, the closing solo is possibly even better than this one, also there is a longish intro where he's introducing the song and he's just sort of jamming and "Stop in the name of love" and "don't let me be misunderstood" are both audible in his guitar picking, check it out it's a brilliant performance
I was at that concert, your right the sound quality is superb partly due to the acoustics of the theatre, it seemed that i could feel or touch the sounds in front of me, hard to describe, no I wasn't on psychedelics that night, unforgettable concert
This guitar solo always makes me smile and remind me of how beautiful some things can be. It's just something about music and what certain chosen ones like Mark can do with it.
Mark's touch on the guitar is just otherworldly, the incredible sense of feel and melody, the phrasing, the dynamics, he is just on another level to almost every player I've heard. A true master.
I thought Telegraph Road was wonderful, but this is totally incredible, its different from the other versions, his guitar from the middle to the end is out of this world. Mr Knopfler thank you for making such a beautiful version here, Sydney didn't know how lucky they were. ❤
OMG I still get chills watching him play that fucking guitar!!!! Saw them once & I'd see them a million times over if I could. Damn I miss this band so much!!!! I could watch him for hours. NO JOKE!!!
All of his band musicians are awesome individually... Mark is directing! Because someone has to coordinate them. So everyone harmonizes with everyone. As the sun does, all the planets and moons revolve around it. The sun has power and it shines! And we shine with them...MK forever ❤
My favourite song of all times. Knopfler is a top storyteller. Everytime I listen to this song I'm instantly teleported to the story. It's out of this world. Like Your Latest Trick or Brothers In Arms... or others from his solo career like Lights of Taormina and Before Gas and TV. What an amazing storyteller!!!
Probably the best song they played that night - I was there ! Knopfler has an astonishing sense of melody, vibrato and chord triad harmony on his guitar- !
Something beautiful...., these solos live with us for years and years, and for the next generations to come, I think he will be heavily appreciated in a hundred years also
Outstanding as ever from Dire Staits, I love how after the breakdown and soft vocals, Mark plays some gorgeous an emotional guitar which he seems to vary with each performance of this amazing song, and the outro speaks for itself.
It always makes me happy to see their live performances I wish I could have seen them live in the height of their careers. It’s unbelievable how much of a god on the strat Mark is yet still so humble. He was so efficient, also Terry Williams is a criminally under rated drummer. Truly one of if not the greatest band in history imo.
This is about Spanish City fun fair that mark enjoyed in his youth here in the North-east of england, whitley Bay to be precise! We here in geordie land relate to this song literally as we all had this childhood/youth experience at the Spanish city, though it is generally universal😎😊
None of the other versions come close, lucky bastards in Sydney that witnessed this one, they played this song at the second Melbourne concert in ‘86 but I can’t remember it being like this version,I’m pretty sure it was different, I taped this on VHS and cassette and still have them. God bless the person who uploaded this. I wonder if Triple M or channel nine have them in their archives or if they have the rights to remaster this concert and release it on BluRay.
LOVE THIS SONG!!!!! ESPECIALLY ITS CLIMAX!!!! GREAT VOCAL HARMONIES, TOO👏👏👏👏 Takes Me Right Back To RED ROCKS That Gorgeous Colorado Summer Night I Heard Them Live In 1986!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Why doesn't he play this masterpiece live anymore, are there any comments from him in this regard? Heard it in the film "officer and gentleman" for the first time. The second part ist pure magic, it shows Knopflers genius.
The official explanation is that it was one of his father's favourite songs and when he died in 1993 Mark vowed not to play it live ever again (and he hasn't played it since 1992). Some fans doubt that is the real reason he doesn't play it, but no other reason was ever given. So it's safe to say the official reason is true, unless he secretly hates the song or he can't play it properly anymore (I doubt it, especially back in 1996 when he was touring promoting his solo debut album "Golden Heart" and still had some of the energy and verve of his Dire Straits years and could easily have played it live if he truly wanted).
One of my first jobs was working at a movie theater right out of high school Officer and a gentleman was one of the movies that played that year and I’ll never forget the song that played during the bar scene and I wondered who is that band? I ended up buying tickets to see Dire Straights at the Concord Pavillin California like maybe a year later as I was so taken by them
Versione splendida. L’atmosfera, i musicisti in perfetta forma, i cori, Mark in grande spolvero. Grazie 😍

Stunning song played with dynamics and great structure.. MK's outdo solo is truly stunning . Exquisite note choice. That solo is truly brilliant. One of my favourite guitarists of all time.
È incredibile sembra suonata dagli angeli io nn lo so spiegare è celestiale e basta.
Cries with love sounds great in English as well 👍 The author Douglas Adams said "... he sounds like angles singing after some beers at the pub" )) His guitar sound is earthy and real, working class and intelligent with outstanding beauty. And in this song, such emotional melancholy that fits with the lyrics. Joy thinking of a wonderful day with sadness that it is gone forever, like the opportunity that he let walk away.
I was 4 when this song came out and its one of rhe greatest achievements in music. A man who has conquered the guitar and is letting us all listen to his genius. I feel so many emotions listening to this and it seems to fit every mood I'm in. Thankyou Dire Straits

Underrated🙂
Best comment 😂🎸
I love that! Always said it was like his backing vocal singers, constant dialogue with the him.

You guys are lucky.. This was probably one of the greatest concerts of all time.. I wish I could have been there, but I was only 5 at the time..

I've certainly heard it said that he claims to have never played the solo at the end of Sultans the same and I dare say the same is true for this one.
The most brilliant Knopfler`s solo and one of the most underrating guitar solos ever. Baroque and sublime.

There never appears to be enough frets on marks guitars let alone his fingers 🎸 🖐🏽
Love the subtle changes he always makes in this song - even sweeter than Wembley '85.
He transitions towards a country inspired playing at 7:30...very different from other live versions. Damn he's good!
Dire straits sempre i migliori, chitarra favolosa.
There are lots of guitar solos, but only very few deserves to be this long.
Without words, just thanks, and Joy.
Long life to the king of play the guitar.
Really beautyfull.
Un chef-d’œuvre 🎸🎸❤❤🎸🎸
Over the edge fantastic
I was lucky enough to watch this live :) Bought my first cd stereo with Brothers In Arms and best speakers I could afford.
So beautiful Mark masterclass
So proud to be your fan !
This is real rock !!
Mark is higher than hall.
Sad he won't tour again . But he's making another album . That makes me smile
Tunnel of Love is a song that will live forever in my life as long as I live.
I am telling my son that Mark is the best.
wow thanks for putting 2 ads in the middle of his solo
The best solo I have never heard it brings me to tears
Best guitar solo ever.
Cries with love sounds great in English as well 👍
The author Douglas Adams said "... he sounds like angles singing after some beers at the pub" ))
His guitar sound is earthy and real, working class and intelligent with outstanding beauty.
He doesn't conquer the guitar, he's like an expert horse whisperer he rides it without overwhelming its spirit, if you get what I mean.
I just discovered this today. Lovely to hear the whole song without reactors interrupting all the time.
RIP Jack Sonni DCD le 30 août 2023 âgé 68 ans 😢😢😢
I wonder what Mark himself recon as his best solo, has he ever said anything about that? Parts of this solo is just soo beautiful
❤❤il migliore artista chr sa suonare in questo modo eccezionale mitcogrande Mark❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
And this was the end of nearly 300 shows , that's stamina
2022 and it still sounds great.
I just love a guitarist who uses every string, every fret.
