    before picking the heifers you want to keep give them till 400-500# range you'll be surprised on how they change. I personally like the bigger framed cattle for easier calving.

    I like Advancing Eco Agriculture on You Tube as a podcast. It's mostly about
    getting the micro-nutrient balance of plants right for maximum growth. It's
    crowding organic and is most valuable for intensely managed high value crops
    like fruit, but there is value to field crops and pasture. Interesting anyway.
    Your videos are mostly animal husbandry. I wouldn't mind seeing some of the
    crops or pasture grown at your families place and how it fits in with cattle.

    Not the most sanitary milk for the calves with bottles & nipples on the ground & the cats in the milk replacer ! Oh well, the calves immune system will expand.

    Check out Doc Talk on UA-cam it's interesting and may be useful to you. The doc in these videos works at K State. Doctor Dan is the son of the veterinarian(John) I used when I was farming in Iowa who was a great vet. John went on to be the Dean of Veterinarian school at Iowa State. One suggestion is to keep the cats away from licking the milk as they could carry disease virus that could get the calves sick, an old time farmer told me that.

      @FarmandHammer  5 років тому +2

      I’ll have to check it out! Somehow I haven’t found the channel yet. And I normally I just try to let the cats drink the spilled milk but I didnt want anyone to think I was “mean” to the cats lol. Thanks for the info!

    I'm getting some bottle calves and I want you know what the best milk replacer is

    • @FarmandHammer
      @FarmandHammer  5 років тому

      I personally use ADM nursetrate but I know there are many options and everyone has their own personal preference. But just as a guideline, don’t buy medicated milk replacer or milk replacer that has soy in it! Neither are good for the calves. But other than that you should be able to pick whichever you would like. Hope that helped a little!

      They are half Holstein and half gelbvieh. The mothers are mainly grass fed dairy cows and have been selected for thriving on grass for the last 25 years. So as cows they ought to do really well.

    Do you run a lot of half blood cows or is this a new deal? Are these calves all out of heifers or do the dairies breed beef bulls to cows? I know a dairy that breeds all of his heifers to angus bulls and he always buys top bulls so he has a guy that buys all of his beef cross calves and I was told that the buyer has a cow herd of 500 that are all half bloods and he finishes all of his calves so there is no big discount selling dairy cross calves.

    • @FarmandHammer
      @FarmandHammer  5 років тому

      This is a new thing for me. Both of the dairies I get these from no longer raise their own replacement cows. They are slowly getting out off the dairy industry so they are breeding all of their cows to beef bulls to try and get a little more money for calves. And based on the dairy cross I sold last year, he only brought 20cents a pound less than the straight angus calves. So yes they will be discounted a little, but they would still be 40-50cent higher than straight Holstein. Or who knows, they might look good enough to bring straight beef calf prices 😂
