Anthropologist, dancer, singer, songwriter and French knight -- all of these tags fit but none can fully describe the energetic, passionate human being who has become one of South Africa's greatest musical exports. With a career spanning over 30 years Johnny Clegg is one of South Africa's most prolific musicians and performers. With a critical eye on South Africa's racial imbalances, he has promoted a unique pride in African heritage in a way that reconciles rather than tears asunder. At the height of apartheid he made possible what seemed impossible: a celebratory ideological and artistic model for tolerance and human brotherhood against the backdrop of South Africa's divisive racial policies.
While lecturing anthropology at the University of Witwatersrand, Johnny Clegg worked on blending English lyrics and Western melodies with Zulu musical structures. South African musical producer Hilton Rosenthal signed up Clegg and his musical associate and friend, Sipho Mchunu, at a time when there was official prejudice against mixed race groups.
Johnny Clegg and Sipho Mchunu called their band Juluka ("sweat" in isiZulu). Facing censorship from the state broadcaster, the band toured South Africa. Testing the Group Areas Act, they played at universities, church halls, migrant labour hostels and in private houses.
Juluka released their first album, Universal Men, which was a musical journey into the life of a Zulu migrant worker caught between two worlds. A second album, African Litany, followed to critical acclaim, although largely ignored by the state-owned SA Broadcasting Corporation. Their third album, Ubuhle Bemvelo, was recorded entirely in isiZulu. Following the band's break-up, Johnny Clegg formed Savuka which recorded two best-selling platinum and five gold albums. The band split in 1993 but Mr Clegg continued with a solo career.
Johnny Clegg -- who campaigned against the injustices of apartheid and was instrumental in putting the new South Africa on the world map -- has performed on all four of Nelson Mandela's 46664 Aids Awareness Concerts in South Africa and Norway.
In addition to a number of international awards and honorary degrees, Johnny Clegg's South African awards include the Four Outstanding South Africans Award in 1990; an honorary doctorate from Wits University in 2007; SA Music Association nomination for the Best Live DVD in 2008, and the Order of Ikhamanga in 2012 for his "excellent contribution to and achievement in the field of bridging African traditional music forms, promoting racial understanding ... working for a non-racial society and being an outstanding spokesperson for the release of political prisoners".
For his sensitive and inspiring promotion of South African culture, music and history, both nationally and internationally, and for his success in uniting South Africans and bringing both pride and hope to South Africa, the University of KwaZulu-Natal awards Johnny Clegg its highest honour, the degree of Doctor of Music honoris causa.

I think most whites in South Africa wish they had the ability to bond with the black population the way Johnny Clegg did, imagine how amazing this country would be. RIP Johnny, you were an amazing human being, your music will continue to warm our hearts!
The sad thing, is that black people have always wanted to bond with their white brothers and sisters.
@@nsingizimthethwa7284if you look at how New Zealand have incorporated Mouri culture as it’s own . It’s in your face and everywhere. Canada needs to adopt this with its own native culture. Sadly it’s not happening as yet.
I remember sitting in my uncle's house, as a 6 year old, in the 70's with Johnny and Sipho; the curtains drawn (for our safety), though at the time I didn't understand why Sipho couldn't be there having tea with us and playing music!
I am so grateful that Johnny and Sipho were able to expose my cousins and I to the reality of what was happening in Soweto and the country under the National Party. I often wonder what kind of SA'n I might have been had I not known the truth - would I have been like the Germans after WWII - "I didn't know what was happening" ?
Thank you Johnny and Sipho for everything you did for our country, for opening my young eyes and for remarkable contributions.

I just stumbled onto this 10-year-old video. I always admired Johnny Clegg as a brilliant musician, but I should have known from his music that he also must have simply been a genius. This address proves that. What a shame that he is no longer with us, but his music will live forever.

As I always say, before listening to this remarkable speech of Johnny Clegg. He was a world class citizen. One of very few, who could see the connection of folklore music, as a true compositor. As a Gambian, I find Irish & Scottish folk music already in my rhythm, despite the different cultures. This is a blessing. Music has & will always be the fuel of the soul. RIP Johnny Clegg. My sympathy to the family, friends, members of the band, fans & world citizens.

I'm from Chile, a country in the far end of South America. I've followed Johnny Clegg's trajectory throughout very many years, first out of curiosity and later understanding his great work against apartheid. In time I've learned of his enormous struggle and the risks he took for defending the rights of black people in Africa to live and be free as anyone should be, something he expressed through music and by learning the Zulu language, spreading and making their culture to be known to the world. I hope some day, even though it is only a dream, I may get a chance to meet this ambassador of peace. If anyone is a true, uninterested, self-giving man who stood up against racial violence: that's Johnny Clegg. God bless people like him to make this world a better place to live in.

Omg I loved this! As a teen in the 1980’s - Juluka rocked my world! Literally, they (along with so many other influences) but Juluka stands out high above as the music that helped me to find a sense of identity. As a white South African I didn’t feel that I fitted into any of the cultures - but omg that music connected. It changed the entire focus of my life - and it’s still an exhilarating and wonderful ride! So much gratitude to these amazing humans.

Once again, Johnny shows why his music was head-and-shoulders above anything else being done in the '80's and why its appeal persists to this day. Not only a wonderful musician but an erudite and interesting man outside of music, he is spell-binding to watch and to hear as he weaves vocal magic with his voice and his hands regardless of whether he is speaking or singing. You are truly a remarkable human being, sir! Thank you for all the music. (And special thanks to whoever is responsible for posting the video of this address!)

I started listening to World Music in the late 1980's, I fell in love with the sound and rhythm of the beautiful African music and I was fascinated with the beauty and uniqueness of Johnny Clegg's music style. Johnny Clegg was my favorite musical artist for 30 years. Rip Johnny 💖.

As an old white guy in the USA, I can honestly say I've loved Johnny's music for nearly 40 years. I used to drive my car through the streets of central Florida, in the 1980s, with the windows down and music from Juluka and Savuka blasting at full volume, from the speakers. I should have probably had the windows up and the air conditioner on, in the Florida heat, but the music demanded a voice, and demanded to be played loudly - to be heard. I had to open the windows or go deaf. 😁
MUCH later, when I saw the video of Johnny (in Germany -1999) singing "Asimbonanga," when Mandisa (Mandisa Dlanga) brought Madiba out from backstage, I cried. When I later found out Johnny didn't know about it in advance, and it was done to surprise him, I laughed.
I miss him SO much. Our world is so much poorer for having lost him, but so much richer for having had him among us. I hope he is with Dudu (Dudu Zulu - Dudu Mntowaziwayo Ndlovu) and Bongani (Bongani Masuku), singing and dancing, with Madiba smiling, keeping time, and saying, "Repeat! Repeat!"
Johnny, Sipho, and their fellow musicians from Juluka and Savuka, are pioneers of humanity when it comes to achieving harmony between races.

Was in the military (national service) 1983/4 never associated the music to the politics, but a mate of mine introduced me to the Juluka sound.... loved it and whenever they played would try see him live.... an absolute legend we will remember.... Rip Mr. Clegg!

In Johnny's heart, no one was less ANYTHING than anyone else. He treated everyone as equals - as his brothers and sisters. You will never hear a story about him which says otherwise. He taught us so much. I envy you for having the connection you have with such an amazing culture and its amazing people.

Without the idea of an ego-centric trip, on my part, I feel the same way as Johnny Clegg. I cannot spell the word (tla-tla) he used but I am thankful for loving all cultures, musics, races etc.

After living away from South Africa for way longer than the 24 years I was there for, when I came to visit in 2001 I was amazed at how the Afrikaners seemed to have embraced the New South Africa. And tears streamed down my cheeks when I heard the new national anthem, with "Uit die blou van onse hemel" (the Afrikaans National Anthem) blending into Nkosi Sikelele Afrika (the African National Anthem that had been the hymn of freedom from Apartheid).
I'd grown up in an English speaking family that looked down on Afrikaners, and being in the language-segregated school system also bred enmity between the two groups.... the Afrikaner kids seemed to hate us "Rooinekke", and vice versa.
Then in my University days when I became an anti-Apartheid activist, I associated Afrikaners with all the oppression, and all the harm that was done to my dear friends: The Nationalist government, the Dutch Reformed Church and the Broederbond that propped up the government, the police and the hated Special Branch. were all Afrikaners.
When I returned in 2001, I had a change of heart.
However, it might be a lot harder for most black South Africans to be as truly forgiving as Madiba was. Sadly, it will take a long time for those wounds of the past, which are passed down through generations, to heal,.
I wish you well. The Afrikaners are a darn side more "African" than most of the rest of the white South Africans.

Was the character in "Bullets for Bafazane" a tlatla ? That is an innovative role to aspire to. A worthy goal, to be described as one. E pluribus unum. We are stronger & more vital when we embrace the worldview of others. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. I have studied Mandarin, Japanese, Korean & Spanish, & marvel at the way a different language allows you to look at the world. If there aren't any dojos or academies teaching the isiZulu language & music, a great chance to pass on the power & beauty & joy of the culture to the wider world, will be lost. As an American, whom has listened to J Clegg, since the eighties, I would mourn such an unfortunate loss of continuity. He will be more sorely missed as time passes, not so, I hope, for the culture he adopted. Were I not 65, I would seriously consider emmigration.

+governor madea, believe me, we want to be... but then we hear about another farmer tortured and butchered on his farm, or another hijacking, or hikers murdered on the mountain, blatant destruction of property at a protest or tertiary institution on a daily basis etc. The harsh reality of day-to-day life in South Africa puts a damper on our open-mindedness.

Whilst being hospitalised for a virulent TB which was having a detrimental affect on his already weakened heart, he told my mother -a Nursing Sister - "For 50 years we (the ANC) have been wanting to talk peace & negotiations THROUGH THE BACKDOOR, LET ALONE THE FRONT DOOR...and have been refused..." It all boils down to mans inhumanity to his fellow man... What about SHARING from the get-go....Boland Coetzee - Rugby hero successful wine farmer in Stellenbosch IN THE 70's built schools for his farm workers' children & gave workers stakes in his business... all others pooh-paahed him...I think he was called a "kaffirboetie" too... HE SUCCEEDED BEYOND MEASURE...!!! His name is revered today... ONLY CONCLUSION I'VE COME TO IS....WOMEN MUST RULE!!!

I am open minded to every culture group and language group in South Africa, as a light skinned South African (no such thing as race, and definitely no red and yellow black and white people either, all shades of brown from dark to light). My Mother's great Grandfather came with three other missionaries from Berlin, Germany. They bought land from the Sotho leader Sekhukhune, bought the same land from the government and started a Missionary station named Botshabelo. When they moved on, or their sons moved on to other parts of the Country to be Pastors, etc, they left the houses they built and lived in sometimes for generations for whoever might need a place to stay. They didn’t sell their homes, they left it for anyone else's use. We are all equal in God's eyes. And yet, because I have a light skin and live in South Africa, people call me racist on social media! Now does that sound fair? Never stereotipe people just because you don't know them.
I wish all people would be as open minded as Jhonny Clegg... no matter their race.

Un tlah-tlah" est quelqu'un qui melange sa culture avec d'autres cultures et prend se qui l'interesse ou facilite sa vie. Donc, Johnny Clegg se considere un Tlah-tlah dans un sens positif au lieu du sens normalement pejoratif de ce mot.
