  • Ever wonder where the Teddy Bear came from? No? How about the long way to get the Gathering of Victorian Locomotives? Or just like ghost stories? Well... Welcome to the Hotel Colorado!
We sort of got stuck in Glenwood Colorado when I70 washed out in Glenwood Canyon. So we hunkered down in the Hotel Colorado. NOW, we had always wanted to stay at the Hotel Colorado, so we were fine with getting "stuck" there. Anyway, heard several good ghost stories, the origins of the Teddy Bear, and learned a bit of Colorado History.
Sunday we are back to the Gathering of Victorian Locomotives in Antineto Colorado, but check out what we found while screwing around.

We were sort of wondering about all the crude exposed pipes! Didn't mention it in the video. But why after spending all that money why didn't they cover up all the pipes. WELL..... Each room had a fireplace in 1893. No heat. Little indoor plumbing. BUT in the forties the navy took over the hotel to use as a war hospital. They covered up all the fireplaces and put in steam heat. And were not carful in how they did that. BUT it's part of the hotel history. So it stays... ANYWAY, they are now opening up all the fireplaces. But keeping all the exposed pipes.

Yeah I was going to say something about that but figured it was retrofitted for electricity and heat later on. And it was probably done on the cheap.

As you said it's all part of the motel's history. There is something interesting about seeing all the different changes that happened to a building like this.

At least it is not the big shiny air ventilation hoses that are now in "design" for remodeled buildings.

It is amazing hotel. You mentioned the Shinning hotel which was the Stanley hotel in Estes Park which is supposedly hanted too. My wife and I spent our 15th anniversary at the Stanley. Great hotel and alot of history. Estes Park is a very beautiful place to visit plus lots of wildlife if you get a chance to visit sometime. Not to far from Golden, Central city, Blackhawk and Idaho Springs. Thanks for taking us along. Be safe and see you on Sunday.👍🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂

I had heard a number of stories about how the Teddy Bear came into being... the one started at the Hotel sounds the most plausible. But it could be that all of them could have truth to them.
Thanks for sharing your stop here with us, you were walking through history while being it to us. Places like this I find interesting and delightful to visit.
Sadly when I was in that area some years ago on a trip with my partner at the time she didn't want to explore the area but I did. So that makes this more enjoyable for me.

David Moffat died in 1911. The Moffat Tunnel opened in 1928. Just in time for the 1929 stock market crash and 1930's depression.

Cool video guys. What a magnificent hotel. I was going to mention all the conduit and pipes but you beat me to it. I'm sure alot of those old lighting fixtures in the day were run on kerosene or gas before electricity and the pipes were well to keep out in the open like that. Adds flavor to the hallway. I was hoping for a ghost story. Maybe someday you two might visit the Overlook?

We stayed there on our trip out west when I proposed to my wife. Unfortunately only one night. Then on to Aspin to a horrible hotel And overpriced food. We did finally find an Irish pub ran by a former Chicagoan that had good food at a reasonable price. We Road out on the Zepher from Chicago. Didn't buy a teddy bear.
